Don't go to Limerick

Galway is nice.

A day in Dublin is more than enough.

catinthehat2 · 03/02/2011 21:10

Also, if anyone knows where the heck we drove in Ireland in the early 70s, out in the wilds with big chunks of sparkly white quartz sitting on the grass, I would love to know. I was a bit too young to make notes, but I would like to go back.

Galway or Cork, do not do not do not go to Limerick!

I'd go to Galway and drive up and down the west coast, so much to see there.

seanbonbon · 03/02/2011 21:14

Go to the Shannon- Lough Derg is lovely.

catinthehat2 · 03/02/2011 21:17

terry wogan did a nice program about ireland recently. it was v. pleasant and gives a good overview of the highlights.

and yes don't go to limerick

BustleInYourHedgerow · 03/02/2011 21:32

Fourth avoiding Limerick. Galway is lovely, Galway has a really nice vibe. I'm going to be biased and recommend the North-West, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.

SJisontheway · 03/02/2011 21:39

I think most of the west coast is stunning. Kerry / west cork is really spectacular. Kenmare is a good base, or Killarney - lots to do around there. Dublin is good too. I wouldn't skip it.

Iwishiwasasleep · 03/02/2011 21:46

West Cork/Kerry or Galway. Definitely not Limerick. Also, second the one night in Dublin is enough. Galway is v quick from Dublin now.

Would you be thinking of the stone walls in Galway. They look kind of twinkly on the sun? or the Burren - it's a huge area of limestone?

cornsilk · 03/02/2011 21:50

what's wrong with limerick?
knock airport is a good location to get somewhere nice I think

GwendolineMaryLacey · 03/02/2011 21:50

Galway Galway Galway, then drive up to Mayo.

RMCW · 03/02/2011 21:52

Galway, then up to Mayo and Donegal

stleger · 03/02/2011 21:56

Bits of Limerick are awful. Parts of Limerick are lovely. Like London, in that respect. Go to Cork, or even to Belfast!

BuzzLightBeer · 03/02/2011 21:57

Limerick..half of it is gangland, the other half is just regular shit hole.

One night is not enough in Dublin! Theres so much touristy stuff to do!

PinkyWithABrain · 03/02/2011 21:57

I live in NI and I would recommend Donegal. It's so beautiful. Bundoran is a lovely spot and you can go surfing on bodyboarding. There's a lovely wee area called downings and there's a pub called the singing pub (if it's stil there) their mussels are to die for! Dublin is ok-good to see. Go on a Saturday and you can go to the Market round by temple bar-they have every type of food you could wish for! Also in NI the Antrim coast is fab too-bushmills, giants causeway and lots of seaside towns. Enniskillen is nice too-there's upper and lower lough Erne and you can stay in some lovely cottages. Oh there's Kesh and Lusty Beg island too if you fancy watersports! Have never been to cork but the ones in work are always raving about it. There's loads to see really wherever you go. The Coastal areas are my favourite bits though.

It's also a long way to Tipperary...

My family originate from Downings, in Donegal. It's stunning round there. I'd recommend Cork, Kinsale, Galway and up to Connemara (Roundstone is lovely) and Donegal.

BustleInYourHedgerow · 03/02/2011 22:13

Corn- Limerick is known as stab city, it's just not nice. True about shit roads in Sligo/ Donegal, I don't drive so had forgotten! Sparkly stones annoying me now- sure there's probably been a second rate housing estate built on where ever it is now!

drivingmisscrazy · 03/02/2011 22:13

I'd recommend County Clare - the Burren is spectacular (and might be the sparkly quartz thingy dimly remembered above) and there are some lovely beaches. I'd go to somewhere like Fanore (avoid Lahinch - a bit of a dump imo); Dingle, Beara peninsulas lovely, also Cape Clear, West Cork. Mayo fabulous too - wild mountains, fabulous beaches, great trips out to the islands (Clare Island is fabulous).

I also have a great fondness for south tipperary (2 great mountain 'ranges' - Knockmealdowns and Galtees), but no seaside...

I think 3 days/nights in Dublin probably enough, especially with little ones in tow (live there...)

drivingmisscrazy · 03/02/2011 22:15

I'm with Maryz - could do this for HOURS...Clare also has Ailwee Caves which are cool

JetLi · 03/02/2011 22:19

Galway def. Spent a week in Limerick once. It was OK but Galway is bloody brilliant.
