Langstrath Hotel at far end of Borrowdale. Quite remote. Great for walks. Cosy and cheerful. Not too posh. Great pub meals and fire. Big breakfast. Ask for the bedroom with the big bathroom (surely one of the best 'sitting on the loo' views anywhere). None of the room s are huge but it's a great winter hotel - Cosy.
Oh I'm so excited, when are we going?
nappybaglady · 09/10/2005 21:20
Langstrath is 20 mins drive from lovely Keswick - GREAT for gift shopping. Tiny tea shops at nearby Grange and Rosthwaite although may not be open in offseason.
Drunken Duck is close to Hawkshead which is nice for a browse, then there's ambleside and windermere (Bowness) nearby. Closest - and totally fab - coffee shop to duck is the old Slate Factory at Skelwith Bridge. Can't rememeber the name of the shop but the cafe is called Chesters. They do the biggest cakes you've ever seen. The walk to Chesters and back from Drunken Duck would justify one of these cakes. (But I stll prefer the Langstrath)
I want to go...

Agree with Nappybaglady - either Drunken Duck (have eaten but not stayed) or the lovely Langstrath. AW Wainwright considered the Jaws of Borrowdale, very close to Langstrath, to be the loveliest square mile in the lovely Lake District. Apart from Keswick, Cockermouth has some nice shops (including a conscience-easing smashing toy shop, and a well-stocked National Trust shop) and is not that far away.
IMO a lot of the really pricey hotels in the Lakes are a bit corporate and impersonal, but it does depend if what you want is plush anonymity
Have a lovely time. After more than 20 years, my parents are moving back from the Lakes to London on Wednesday and I know it's now going to be much harder for us to get to our favourite haunts any more but we will have grandpa and grandma close by

ooooh, think I will bookmark this one, my birthday is at the end of November and we desparately need a night away from the drudge of family life at the mo.
I want a small and boutiquey sort of place, not huge, with big beds and nice food.
Will watch this thread with interest.

OrribleOliveOil - i suppose that seems to be the in thing to call a hotel at the moment... Boutiquey (i keep coming across it on my many trawls on the internet!
Yes!!! I want a Boutique style accomodation!
ANteater and Nappybaglady - The Samling looks gorgeous! but it looks quite pricey too... i think i could stretch to £170 for both of us... but 200 is just a little too much!!!!
The Pheasant Inn looks hopeful... anyone been there?
Anteater · 12/10/2005 10:54
The Pheasant at Bassenthwaite, eaten their a few times but not stayed. Food is lovely, as is the building, but its sort of between a fell and the A66.
They filmed the Melvyn Bragg, Time for a shagg (dance) bar scenes here.
I rang the Samling a few months to enquire about availability and they did offer me a fair bit off the normal rate for odd unfilled nights, so its worth a go. Sharrow Bay will not dissapoint..
The Leeming House, Ullswater, is set in very romantic grounds, its now part of the McDonald chain so you should be able to deal a bit on late availability.
