Can we have a Lovely Loos of the UK thread?

Following on from the disabled loo thread, I thought it might be nice if we shared our knowledge of decent loos, and why we like them.

Probably not much use to you lot, but if you go to Morzine Avoriaz, there is a cafe called Berits and Brown on the main street. They are very child friendly, with baby changing in the small toilet, big bin for nappies, nice smelly soap.

Am I the only person who gets a little thrill when she goes into a Nice Loo?

i second the loos at gunwharf quays in portsmouth.

they have great baby changing and also have a special room for changing special needs adults. free mints and shoe polisher and those really cool dyson hand dryers!!

MrsDinky · 06/09/2010 21:07

We hate the Dyson hand dryers, frighten the life out of my DCs. Also dislike the all in one wash and dry units where the dryer comes on automatically after washing, again freaks my kids out - are you listening East Hampshire District Council?

catepilarr · 06/09/2010 21:14

i was impressed with public toilets on queensway x westbourne grove in london, as they were open until midnight! when i was still stuck in an internet cafe and they were always clean.

InThisSequinBraYesYouOlaJordan · 06/09/2010 21:45

Loos in Bourton on the Water in the Cotswolds are lovely.

If you've ever been to Crystals Restaurant in Birkdale, Southport, they are also very nice indeed (think it might be closed now)

boogiewoogie · 06/09/2010 21:49

I am so particular about public toilets that my MIL now judges public loos on whether I would find them acceptable to use! Anyway, from the top of my head:

York Betty's tea room (Norhtallerton one is also nice)

Second Alnwick Gardens. Also Alnwick Castle.

Wetherspoons in Bishop Auckland and Darlington. So spacious!

whomovedmychocolate · 06/09/2010 21:51

John Lewis in Milton Keynes has same parent, small loo and potty in row arrangement but it's all filthy. :(

It looks like it hasn't been cleaned in a year.

Lovely principle though.

Our local shopping centre has one 'accessible' toilet within the main female loos which has the hand drier just above the baby change, so if you are trying to change the baby he gets blasted with hot air every time you move your arms Hmm

TheBreastmilksOnMe
Thank you for your list. I think we Loo Testers should carry a print out of that and do a check list so that we can award a MN Loo Of The Year Award

The motorway service station at Tebay is great - family toilets with baby changing station, adult toilet and sink, child toilet and sink, one of those seats attached to the wall to put a little one in while you are on the loo.

Silverburn shopping centre in Glasgow is good too. It has separate feeding room, baby changing area, parent/child friendly loo, disabled loos, plus the usual male and female toilets which have an attendant and are clean. plus there are 3 sets in the shopping centre!

redsplodge · 07/09/2010 00:36

In the summer we visited a small restaurant (Fresco) in Teignmouth which had a lovely unisex loo. My husband came out of there muttering that blokes are getting shortchanged "if that's what women's toilets are like". The food was quite nice too by the way.

anonymosity · 07/09/2010 01:08

Harrods, if you don't baulk at paying $$ for a pee

kittyonthebeam · 07/09/2010 07:49

I was about to say Harrods. Since when do they charge? Harvey Nics also good. Any nice hotels in Knightsbridge: Berkeley, Mandarin Oriental, etc

lottiejenkins · 07/09/2010 07:56

The ones in the Cattlemarket Bus Station in Ipswich were disgusting and very tiny. They have recently been torched by an arsonist though. What i hate are those wash things that you have to take your hands out of. You get your hands wet, then take them out to get soap and get your shoes wet, then take them out again to dry your hands and get your shoes wet again!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

ivykaty44 · 07/09/2010 07:59

Gusto Richo in Leamington has lovely loo's though a clinmb of two steep stair cases - hand cream and nice decor
, the coffee and homemade cakes are very good

Birmingham airport has clean pleasant loos' I was suprised

John Lewis loo's on the ground floor at touchwood solihul and also ont he other side is the pick up place - they have water conmtainer and cuyps - idea as I am always thirsty after shopping

snoozathon · 07/09/2010 08:02

My pet gripe about public loos is when the sanitary bin is so close to the loo you're practically sitting on it

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 07/09/2010 09:45

Has anyone else seen those really posh portaloos? I went to one at a festival once, it was called something like "The Mayfair" and had classical music, perfume in the air, fresh flowers, solid wood doors, lovely basins etc.

YouthworkersWife · 07/09/2010 09:48

I second Eloise73 with the Knights Templar ones on Chancery Lane. Worth going to the pub just for the toilets!

Psammead · 07/09/2010 10:54

If anyone happens to go to a restaurant called Pier 51 in Degerloch, Germany - please use the loos! Free selection of perfume, individual fluffy towels for hand drying, lotions, potions, free tampons! And tasteful classical music piped through speakers on a low volume. Whenever we go there I have to go to the loo even when I don't need to. Nicest I have ever seen.

StealthPolarBear · 07/09/2010 10:58

Good thread :)

Trenchers in Whitby

very clean, huge, fantastic baby change area with bars up at the side of the mat instead of those nasty straps, and a sink right next to it so you can wash your hands without having to leave your baby and go off to the sink. Free tissues and baby wipes :o

Not good in a family friendly way - but restored to their former glory the underground loos on The Hayes, Cardiff.

opalmum · 07/09/2010 12:44

I love Wangey rd public loos in Chadwell Heath. Really clean, original old loos with brass polished to an inch of it's life. Should be a listed building, I think. Not so great for families, tho, no baby changing that I could see. In Chelmsford we always head for the Meadows loo, which has great baby changing, with a loo for grown ups. Drives me nuts that there's often no way for mums of little ones to use the loo themselves after changing nappies.

MmeLindt · 07/09/2010 14:01

I can ask MN to move this to General Travel advice or some such place.

Lovely to see so many loo fans here.

Bury St Edmunds park toilets are lovely and clean.

luciemule · 07/09/2010 14:03

And John Lewis Cambridge and John Lewis Cribbs Causeway - lovely.

aquavit · 07/09/2010 16:02

There used to be divine loos in the Lemon Tree restaurant in Oxford, but it's now closed.

The Summertown Wine Cafe (also Oxford) has a very nice loo, if a bit on the frippery side (a touch cushions-on-the-bed, to invoke another thread...). But it has a very steep flight of stairs that are a tad hard to navigate in very high heels after too much wine.
