Can we have a Lovely Loos of the UK thread?

Following on from the disabled loo thread, I thought it might be nice if we shared our knowledge of decent loos, and why we like them.

Probably not much use to you lot, but if you go to Morzine Avoriaz, there is a cafe called Berits and Brown on the main street. They are very child friendly, with baby changing in the small toilet, big bin for nappies, nice smelly soap.

Am I the only person who gets a little thrill when she goes into a Nice Loo?

There's some on Weston seafront that always make me smile. Possibly not the best, but definitely the tackiest and chintziest. Pot pourri, posters, little ornaments... In public toilets.

There's some in deepest, darkest Wales somewhere on the A44. Perfect, they were. And a stack on Gold awards. It was literally just a little building, on the side of the road, in the middle of nowhere.

most entertaining- a restaurant called LMNT in Hackney- pornographic images, devils and nymphs adorn the walls- very random!

moragbellingham · 06/09/2010 14:32

2nd floor at selfridges.

Not bad loos, but sitting in a gliding chair to feed your baby on a shopping trip makes a difference!

UnePrune · 06/09/2010 14:36

Claridge's.
(Unsurprisingly!)

lilmissmummy · 06/09/2010 14:48

Random Hall hotel have THE best toilets I have ever seen.

Marlborough public toilets are disgusting.

Bluewater have great public toilets, very clean!

Best one by far is the Knights Templar pub in London, Chancery Lane. Apparently it featured in the movie the Da Vinci Code but I didn't see the movie.

It has sofas, fountains and the cubicles are huge and have these round doors that slide around when they close.

I googled it and found this link to some photos of it, pretty good for what is now essentially a Weatherspoon where we go for our weekly work lunch!

I like the ones at Harrods to spiritmum. But they are a bit too ..quick IYSWIM.

You are barely outthe cibicule door and they are straight in there to plump it up for the next punter.
It does make you feel a bit like they are going
"Quick quick.... Its her agin..get in there before anything sets!"

MrsJohnDeere · 06/09/2010 15:14

Aylett's Garden Centre, St Albans. Clean and has a fab cubicle with a normal loo and a little toddler sized one so people with children can do their business at the same time!

Alnwick Gardens cafe. Loos are fine but the basins are out if this world; they change colour every few seconds.

MrsJohnDeere · 06/09/2010 15:17

Smith's of Smithfield is fab to visit with small boys. Has views of train tracks, building sites, diggers etc.

LeslieWinkle · 06/09/2010 15:23

I second the Trafford Centre loos, decent changing facilities and and a breastfeeding room. And, if on a busy day they are full then the the John Lewis baby change room its even nicer and has a discreet bit partitioned off for feeding.

Love a good loo!

DastardlyandSmugly · 06/09/2010 15:37

Selfidges have fab loos.

But the best loos I've ever been in are at Sketch. They are in a large low-lit room and are white, egg-shaped pods. It is like stepping into Wall-E or something.

IvaNighSpare · 06/09/2010 16:05

Can't name any good loos off the top of me head right now, but I'm glad I'm not the only one in the quest for the perfect toilet facilities.
Sadly my obsession stems from a visit to Spain when I was 10. My grandmother and I visited a cafe in Lloret de Mar where the toilet was utterly minging (think the scene from Trainspotting and you're close). Out of necessity we were forced to use it.
Three months later my grandmother died Sad. it was actually as a result of cancer but for some time after I was convinced the filthy loo was the cause.
Keep up the Good Loo Reviews!

Am very much enjoying finding other loo lovers.

Calgary beach, Isle of Mull.

Used to be spotless and always had fresh flowers.

LaurelLeaf · 06/09/2010 16:25

I was very impressed by the loos on Weymouth seafront - the ones where you go down some stairs to get into them.

During the summer we were there and DS2 announced he 'needed a poo' and I basically headed double-quick for any port in a storm expecting them to be rancid and they were wonderful. The attendant was doing a great job at sweeping up the sand and the loos smelt pleasant!

popsycal · 06/09/2010 16:46

alnwick gardens
fenwicks, toy floor

lottiejenkins · 06/09/2010 17:53

Am going to Weymouth soon. I will have to check them out!!!

InmyheadIminParis · 06/09/2010 18:25

With children - the famiy loo 2nd floor, Grand Arcade Cambridge
Witout Children - Claridges... all that marble and porcelain. Loo perfection sighs

QueeferSutherland · 06/09/2010 18:31

There are some proper old-school ones in Weymouth with thick wooden doors and OTT tiling. Smelly though.

The bloke's at Dock Gate Four in Southampton are amazing, apparently. Women's are meh.

Ishtar2410 · 06/09/2010 18:48

The loos in the car park beside the church in Glastonbury aren't too bad. They are a bit municipal, no porcelain, just stainless steel, but I've yet to find them messy or unusable. (More to the point DD will use them...she's a bit particular about public loos).

My vote for the worst is the ones in the multi-storey car park in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. These are seriously disgusting. My advice is to head for a coffee shop and use theirs.

Threelittleducks · 06/09/2010 18:53

Always remember having to change 11 month old ds at Alton Towers and finding the most remarkable baby change facilities....

They had a light show above the padded change mat on the roof which changed colours and played various soothing bits of music. It was awesome. Very clean and tidy too - moisturiser, nappy sacks, nice big clean nappy bin. Couldn't fault it.

Was also very awed by the poshness of the portaloos at Carnoustie Golf Open. Didn't know portaloos could be so very grand. They were a lot nicer than a lot of other loos have been in.

BertieBotts · 06/09/2010 19:24

I remember being very impressed the first time we went to Touchwood in Solihull with their toilets, specifically the sloping sinks! Not in the same league as some on here though.

Worst ones are the ones you get at the side of big, long, middle of nowhere roads in Wales, all tin cans with festering bits of wood attached as a "seat" Yuk.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 06/09/2010 19:24

Things that make a loo the place to poo:

  1. Space and good lighting.
  1. Decent mirrors that are clear and tilted in such a way that they make you appear slimmer.
  1. Proper taps that don't give you a drenching when you turn them on or are so rubbish the water just trickles out.
  1. Hot and cold running water.
  1. Smelly hand soap and mosituriser from a dispenser.
  1. A place to apply your make-up away from wet sink area.
  1. Two hand drying options. The first being a Dyson hand drier and the second being good quality paper towels/hand towels that you just throw into a laundry bin after.
  1. Proper toilet tissue and not the sand paper/baking paper that some loos have.
  1. Bins for sanitary ware.
  1. A toilet attendant to clean up any spills etc.

  2. Vending machines.

  3. A baby changing area that doesn't stink and provides nappies and wipes.

  4. A family toilet.

  5. A baby feeding room with a comfy chair.

  6. No vile smelling air freshners that squirt foul chemicals over you and your baby each time you enter/exit a room.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 06/09/2010 19:27

There is a massive baby changing room in Milton Keynes which is really good - bead frames to keep older ones busy and everything to hand like mat covers, basin, etc. Bedford bus station is HORRIFIC.

taffetacat · 06/09/2010 20:17

Bluewater loos are brilliant for bf. Private big room with separate loo, proper rocking chair, nappy change etc. And there are lots of them.

The most unusual loo I've been to was in NYC - a bar/restaurant in the Tribeca district - can't remember its name. It was a unisex loo with those glass opaque doors that only go opaque once you've locked them....
