Me and DP want a weekend away at the seaside. I like Southport, Brighton and Bournemouth and would like ideas for places with a similar feel.

Whitley Bay

AF you are being very very very naughty indeed. You have suggested Dawlish and Weston Super Mare to be upmarket when I know only too well that they are NOT. Can't comment on Morecambe as haven't been there .

MollieO · 28/07/2010 20:59

I can't go to Morecambe. I can't even spell it correctly .

What is wrong with Barmouth? We'll be near there this weekend although I don't think it will be beach weather (rainy camping trip).

AnyFucker · 28/07/2010 21:07

bib...try Morecambe, you will be pleasantly surprised

bibbitybobbityhat · 28/07/2010 21:09

Is it ooop north?

I'm afraid I'm one of those awful arrogant Londoner type chappies whose been to France more often than I've been north of Luton.

(this is an ironic ref to the Londoner-bashing thread before anyone gets arsey)

AnyFucker · 28/07/2010 21:15

yes, it's oop Norf

it is a charming place

orienteerer · 28/07/2010 21:15

Brancaster

Aberdovey

Porthdinllaen

orienteerer · 28/07/2010 21:18

Blakeney Hotel

domesticsluttery · 28/07/2010 21:23

Aberdovey is nice and if you like that sort of place so is Aberaeron.

Barafundle and Ynyslas are IMHO the most gorgeous beaches though.

Fowey, Cornwall is lovely

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/07/2010 09:08

Isn't Scarborough quite smart nowadays (awaits onslaught of yorkshire MNers going 'tis ALWAYS been smart'

I can't actually think of any other smart seaside towns other than the ones mentioned (Salcombe and Rock). Seaside towns by their very nature are run down and a bit naff, imo.

Doesn't matter how smart they are, there will always be several shops selling sticks of rock manufactured in the 1970s.

Rock is horrible anyway. yes it's smart but it's full of braying smug types wearing guernseys. Cornwall is general is 'orrible. Go to Devon.

Lynton and Lynmouth are pretty places, not exactly towns though, rather small villages.

ShirleyKnot · 29/07/2010 09:11

Tenby in Wales is upmarketish (Well, last time I went it was full to bursting with people wearing hiking books and being all posh)

ruddynorah · 29/07/2010 09:13

scarborough..smart?

no.

and i live in yorkshire.

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/07/2010 09:14

I was going to say Tenby as well.

Or, if you cannot be bothered to go that far, Gower peninsula on the south wales coast.

Restrainedrabbit · 29/07/2010 09:15

Brancaster in Norfolk is 'upmarket' plus there are several very gentrified villages around there i.e Titchwell etc. N. Norfolk is a good bet for upmarket seaside places - Holkham is lovely. But the places you have named are all big and these places are most definitely small - I think if you want a better class of seaside holiday then small is better IMVHO. Lyme Regis is ok too.

CarmelitaMiggs · 29/07/2010 09:19

Southwold

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/07/2010 09:21

Oh well Ruddy, never mind. Have never been there, just read an article in a paper not long back saying that Scarborough had had a renaissance.

Evidently not!

GetOrfMoiLand · 29/07/2010 09:22

Dartmouth is nice. OK not exactly by the sea but there is a nice river there.

domesticsluttery · 29/07/2010 10:07

Tenby?

It wasn't posh when I spent my teenage summers getting dunk and snogging surfers there!

stressheaderic · 29/07/2010 10:12

Abersoch is lovely. As is Nefyn. Quiet, but gorgeous beaches.

TotalChaos · 29/07/2010 10:16

nappy - what's on your wish list for a seaside resort? nightlife or historic buildings, plenty of chain stores and restaurants or small town feel. not taking the piss here, just wondering what you are after. I'ld say Llandudno has a similarish feel to Southport (Victorian shopfronts/arcades), so might be what you are after.

mamijacacalys · 29/07/2010 10:31

Agree with domesticsluttery. Am not a fan of Tenby.

Saundersfoot and Amroth are smaller and nicer.

Broderie · 29/07/2010 10:35

I can't believe that no-one has said Whitstable

Broderie · 29/07/2010 10:36

and Broadstairs

gagamama · 29/07/2010 10:36

Southwold
North Berwick (which is Scotland, but worth a visit)
