Any ideas what happens now and how long it take to come through if they apply today ?

This is odd. He / she has been back now for weeks? How have they been living?

Sillysausage76 · 09/10/2026 11:44

They can still apply but its not guaranteed.

PowerRangerGoGo · 09/10/2026 11:45

Adult dc worked all summer so does have some money
I guess just realised rent was due

Your young person can still apply for the next 9 months.
SFE (assuming you are in England) say they normally take 4 weeks to process an application and 6-8 weeks in busy periods. Hopefully it might be quicker, especially if no details have changed since the first year.

Really

No not really. I wish people wouldn't scare monger.

See the official info here. https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-student-finance/when

Moreholidaysthanjudithchalmers · 09/10/2026 11:53

Yes they can still apply. Hopefully will be through quickly. You might need to loan her rent until it arrives.
Are they definitely enrolled at uni in yr2 (I say this as my dd had a flatmate who failed yr1 and didn’t enrol yr2 but pretended to parents she was a student but she had no student finance as not a student)

PowerRangerGoGo · 09/10/2026 11:53

OK I just seen that on Google ai

Oh dear, bit of a mess, she will only be eligible for min loan so according to Google that actaully will help speed it all up

PowerRangerGoGo · 09/10/2026 11:56

So when can it be sorted for next year..? As early as Feb? And adult dc is hoping to do a placement year if they can get one, so guess they don't know if they will be at uni or not

Of course it’s guaranteed. No guarantee as to when it’ll be paid though. Hopefully fairly quickly. Good lesson to learn - keep up with your admin shit.

Then I’d wait until then.

in fact how far are you from her?

Obviously quite an extreme example but the girl kept it up until late November, her mum was clueless. Lectures aren’t monitored at DD’s uni so anyone could in theory sit in.
It was the big council tax demand that outed her.
I’d be checking she’s ok it’s very odd she’s not thought about it until rent due. Presumably even if she thought she only needed to apply once she’d have been chasing SF where her maintenance loan money was.
Also get her to check rules for placement year. I know for year abroad the home uni still charges a part tuition free.

Sunbringer · 09/10/2026 12:50

And what about her tuition fees… did she forget to apply for those as well? If yes she may be due to pay an awful lot of money soon

FieryA · 09/10/2026 12:52

If she has not paid tuition fees, then she will be unenrolled from the course. I am sure the University’s student finance team will contact her about it soon, if not already. It would be best to get advice from SFE and the University’s team on the next steps.

Finance team won’t be expecting fees from SLC students for a few more weeks yet so this won’t be an issue.

You don’t pay immediately. There’s a month or so until SF tuition fees go through.

Moreholidaysthanjudithchalmers · 09/10/2026 15:30

If you google the uni name and tuition fees due you may find the date. Most unis seem to have a few weeks leeway. My DD’s uni don’t even take first halls payment for about a month.

Violetisafruit · 09/10/2026 15:46

Something is “up” @PowerRangerGoGo .

Can you visit her?

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 09/10/2026 16:40

My DD didn't realise she had to reapply for a uni fees loan every year until the uni sent her an invoice for them back in September. I don't think they had to be actually paid until late October.

She had a bit of a panic but applying for it was easy and sorted quickly. She doesn't take the maintenance loan so no idea how long that takes to come through. She's learnt her lesson.

Whatabouterry · 09/10/2026 16:49

My DS forgot last year. Hadn’t realised you needed to reapply. His was the minimum amount too. It was very quick, sorted in about a week I think.
