Starting up a new thread for anyone whose YP might be applying this autumn for entry next year!

My daughter is applying for English Lit.
We went to the open day at Warwick yesterday, which was good - not top of her list, but at least she has a preference order now! Oxford, Sheffield, Durham, Warwick, Lancaster.
Her school have convinced her to add Durham - she likes the course and the university. The only thing putting her off is that her older sister has just started there, and she really wants to have an experience that’s unique to her - which I completely understand!

summernameandthelivingiseasy · 11/10/2026 11:31

Durham, York, Manchester and a couple of conservatoires here.
some of hers are liberal arts and some music though. She’s very stressed that school hasn’t pressed the button on it yet.

DS is another one with ESAT on Tuesday. He is generally pretty laid back about exams (he has now admitted he was probably too unstressed when doing his GCSEs!), but even he seems quite nervous about it. I’ll be relieved once that and the My Cambridge application are out the way and he can focus on other things.

His other choices are Southampton, Nottingham, Sheffield and Bristol, with Southampton and Nottingham being his top options.

wigywhoo · 11/10/2026 12:23

DD submitted on 25th, school pressed the button on Friday 2nd.

German and philosophy at Oxford.

Others:

Durham (Liberal Arts)
St Andrews
Exeter
Liverpool (has just had an offer)

CrunchyNutCake · 11/10/2026 12:49

DS's choices (and current order of preference) for Music are Oxford, Manchester, York, Durham, and Bristol.
There was a time he was choosing between Physics and Music; I'm quite glad he hasn't got the ESAT to worry about!
Best of luck to everyone for this week.

CannotThinkOfUserNames · 11/10/2026 12:56

YP applied so far to Cambridge and Warwick. They are definitely the top 2 and would be happy with either.
Can't decide on any other options. Does not want a city uni, London or Scotland but may have to reconsider this. Really didn't like Birmingham and was put off Exeter after their experience on the Access programme. York is a possible, but hasn't visited. There aren't that many to choose from. 😬

QueenMabby · 11/10/2026 13:05

DD’s five are Cambridge, Imperial, Durham, York and Birmingham. She has her offer from York already. She’s had loads of emails from Imperial but nothing of substance obviously as they will look at her ESAT first.

XelaM · 11/10/2026 13:06

Does anyone know if for Cambridge Vet Med it's better to do an Open application or to apply to a college that takes the most vet students (but also probably has to most applicants for Vet Med)? My brother and I bother did Open applications to Cambridge and were both interviewed (he was successful, I totally messed up the interview but neither of us applied for Vet Med, so I don't know if that makes a difference).

PhotoDad · 11/10/2026 13:52

Just popping on to wish everyone good luck with entrance tests! My DS was in the first cohort to sit ESAT and then took a gap year, so has just started at Cambridge a week ago. I'm sure that your DC know this, but the main enemy in the test is timing; if they can't do a question quickly, skip it and come back later.

He was back in the same test centre to sit his Driving Theory test just a few weeks ago, which was an odd experience for him! (If people have questions about NatSci, feel free to DM me.)

CreamBeforeJamOnScones · 11/10/2026 14:11

@QueenMabbyare Imperial's emails actually with reference to her application? DD had had some emails from Imperial but I think they are just because she registered for the open day etc...I don't think she has received anything in relation to her application (although I think she is a different faculty from your DD).

Interested when people hear from Warwick (I believe that'll be late) as that'll determine choices 4 and 5.

justteanbiscuits · 11/10/2026 14:15

TMUA for my son on Tuesday. He's doing a lot of studying but came out with us for late lunch yesterday. He seems chill, but he really enjoys exams 🤷‍♀️

Butterfly44 · 11/10/2026 15:59

Very stressed here. Son put Oxford maths but UCAS status still says awaiting school. Some of his friends has been submitted as they’ve had acknowledgment email. Is there anywhere to tell if they have entered refers be and grades? ie. That we are just awaiting button to be pressed?

Poisoningpigeons · 11/10/2026 16:11

DD2 is getting very stressed preparing for ESAT on Tuesday. Even snapped at me when I brought a mug of tea and a biscuit to her, which is very out of character. She's also stressed that school haven't submitted her UCAS yet, she'd sent it quite a few days ago.

To be honest, I'm now kind of relieved that DD1 decided against Oxbridge - she's the more highly-strung twin and I can't even imagine the atmosphere in the house if she were also doing this!

PhotoDad · 11/10/2026 16:12

When your DC submits the form, their adviser/referee/whatever-name receives the form and adds reference and predicted grades. When that person clicks submit, it gets sent to the designated UCAS Co-Ordinator for double-checking, and then only when that person has approved it does it finally go to UCAS. The student can't see progress after clicking submit, but the Co-Ordinator can see everything at the school.

If the adviser has made a mistake, the Co-Ordinator should spot it and return it for correction, which is why forms all submitted at the same time by students might take a day or more extra. That is the person to contact if it hasn't gone by the day before the deadline. Some schools might have their own title for it.

BreakfastClub80 · 11/10/2026 17:16

DD doing ESAT on Tuesday too, high stress levels here! However, she’s working incredibly hard despite finding Maths 2 really difficult and I’m so impressed by that.

She had a fantastic offer from Sheffield (by which I mean a standard offer and an offer which accounts for her 4 A levels) which has buoyed her up a bit and I’m very thankful for that.

Good luck to everyone this week.

A couple saying they’ve received her application and that they are reviewing it and then a load about student welfare and other stuff. It’s only started up since she put her application in though. She’d had nothing since the open day.

Eccle80 · 11/10/2026 20:30

@BreakfastClub80 that’s great news on the Sheffield offer, I thought it seemed really good both in terms of the student environment and engineering department. How long after applying did she get it? I’m hoping DS might get an offer from somewhere this week which would be nice with all the ESAT stress, but I don’t know if that’s too optimistic on the speed.

CreamBeforeJamOnScones · 11/10/2026 21:02

@BreakfastClub80 are you saying that Sheffield gives two offers??? Apologies if I've misunderstood.

Thanks for elaborating@QueenMabby...P.S I mark thanks on lots of helpful messages. I do hope posters see these / get notifications of my thanks as I think some apps don't alert posters to this.

BreakfastClub80 · 11/10/2026 21:45

@Eccle80 DD’s application went in the week before last so her offer from Sheffield took a week-ish so you never know. Fingers crossed for your DS.

@CreamBeforeJamOnScones I’m not 100% sure how it’s worded but DD was given the standard offer from Sheffield plus an alternative offer. So A star AA and AAAB.

CreamBeforeJamOnScones · 11/10/2026 22:04

Oh, I didn't realise they offer for three and four. I thought if you declare you are taking four, they offer based on four and if you drop one, you let them know and they reassess their offer.

KidsDoBetter · 12/10/2026 12:22

English lit at Ox here all submitted last week. Offer from York in.

QueenMabby · 12/10/2026 12:34

Ok. ESAT done and dd delivered back to school. She seemed quite happy. School play starts today so I’m glad we’ve got this ticked off and she can enjoy the next few days.

justteanbiscuits · 12/10/2026 15:08

Son hasn't even had confirmation of receipt from any emails. Just an email confirming UCAS application had been submitted.

When I then see people getting offers it's 😲😲😲

Jane077 · 12/10/2026 15:30

Could anyone tell me how quickly they received My Cambridge application after submitting UCAS? I know it's officially within 48 hours, but I'm hoping it'll be less than that because my DC I know will end up submitting their UCAS bang on deadline on Thursday (they're still making changes) and then we're going away with dodgy internet for a week early Saturday, which gives very little time to do the form Eeek.

School submitted 4:30pm, My Cambridge email arrived 8am on the following morning.
