Starting up a new thread for anyone whose YP might be applying this autumn for entry next year!

Hello, can I join you? DD1 submitted her application for Spanish at Oxford yesterday with grades in hand. She has handled the whole thing with her old school with no input from us, so am hoping it all goes ok! She turned down her confirmed place for Spanish and English at Bristol this summer as she wasn't sure if uni was for her and one of their creative writing tutors had moved on, which was her main area of interest for English. She has had a complete turnaround since then and now really wants to go to Oxford, so am hoping she at least gets to iv. Her other options are to study Spanish and theatre studies which I think might be better for her as a course, so we shall see what transpires.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 10/10/2026 06:54

@namechanged221 - yes she has visited both - DH took her to the colleges open day earlier in Sept. A bit earlier in the year she went to a history study day at Christs which she enjoyed but didn’t seem to make her want to apply there.

We are in Cumbria - our school took them down to oxford to queen’s for an outreach event which she did enjoy but ended up preferring the history course at cambridge because you can apparently go further back in time without having to do joint honours ancient history with it.

She has never had Jesus in her radar I don’t think - there’s just so many colleges you can’t consider them all! My nephew (now big lad of 20) was a boy chorister at Jesus - remember going to hear them sing evensong - beautiful college!

I came across this posted on a different website yesterday, and thought it was interesting. It shows all of the achieved grades applicants got across the subjects at Oxford, and for PPE it shows the number for each achieved grade bracket who got offers. I didn’t look into whether or not they have that for all courses (or Cambridge).

@CannotThinkOfUserNames
thanks so much

we checked on ucas and it has not been submitted!!!

it also still had his further maths a level on that’s he’s now dropped 😳

so glad we checked! I feel I can’t trust the school to get this right!

summernameandthelivingiseasy · 10/10/2026 14:19

we are having the same problem @namechanged221. DD did hers ages ago but school has sat on it. Don't quite know how to stress how angry we will be if they miss the deadline.

XelaM · 10/10/2026 14:22

Uhh are UCAS applications submitted by the school rather than the pupils? I can't remember my own, but I thought I submitted it myself?

summernameandthelivingiseasy · 10/10/2026 14:23

I thought that too but it emerges that they finally send it. Unlike with conservatoires. This month has been a steep learning curve

Eccle80 · 10/10/2026 14:32

Yes when they click submit and make the payment, it then goes to their school/college to do grades and reference.

DS’s went in on Thursday and he had emails from Cambridge and St John’s confirming they had received it on Friday (and from a couple of the other unis too)

RatherBeOnVacation · 10/10/2026 15:03

Do all Cambridge colleges send an acknowledgment individually as well? My DD has had the Cambridge one with the additional supplement forms (which have all been submitted), but nothing from the college she applied to.

SnapAndTap · 10/10/2026 16:11

UCAS went from school 28th.
Acknowledgement from Cambridge on 29th. From the college on 6th.

Molly2008 · 10/10/2026 16:26

Hi can I join? Does Oxford send a confirmation email as well as Cambridge?

CreamBeforeJamOnScones · 10/10/2026 16:32

An email from UCAS said they would email an acknowledgement when DD's form is received but although we've received the My Cambridge form (which means Cambridge must have received the UCAS form) we haven't received the acknowledgement from UCAS.

Does this matter? We haven't heard from any other choices and there's a phrase about assumptions making fools...

DS did get an acknowledgement from Oxford. I haven't seen it, but he said something along the lines of he would be receiving another email with next steps soon.

Butterfly44 · 10/10/2026 17:50

Joining thread. DS put in UCAS for maths at Oxford. TMUA next week. Planning to wait for that result before adding next 4 choices.

i was wondering the same thing? And thanks to your reply I asked my DD and found out she had received one too!! Don’t know what it says, but I’m glad to know she got it 😁 So thank you!

Sorry! There was an error and so I ended up posting four times! I have asked Mumsnet to delete the repeats!

ESAT for dd tomorrow. She’s nervous, stressed and pre-menstrual. Not a good combination!

CreamBeforeJamOnScones · 11/10/2026 08:30

DD said she felt the strain yesterday and actually agreed to a stroll without protesting. She has a plan of some revision for today but we've agreed wellbeing is the priority.

It's too much for our YP. Now glad she's not sitting it in January as it'll all be over next week.

namechanged221 · 11/10/2026 08:36

Oh dear, I think this is becoming more stressful!
My DS was of the impression they’d submitted it on Wednesday.
I am going to go into the school tomorrow morning and find out what is going on… deadline is now only 3 days away.

RatherBeOnVacation · 11/10/2026 08:45

ESAT on Tuesday for my daughter. Remarkably calm but she’s been very pragmatic about it all - she’s put the work in but if her scores aren’t great then Cambridge just isn’t the right place for her. That said, she’s really happy with the three other options she has on her UCAS form (with the fifth still to be decided) so that probably helps.

No offers yet though, but wasn’t really expecting any as it’s so early.

namechanged221 · 11/10/2026 08:54

What is everyone else’s additional choices?
My DS has put Manchester and York so far for History and Economics. Still thinking about the other two

BumpyaDaisyevna · 11/10/2026 09:03

My DD - history - is putting UCL, York, Manchester and Leeds. It’s between UCL and York as second favourite - going on heart she prefers York while also really liking UCL. In fact her cousin who was a boy chorister at Jesus is at UCL doing history himself now and really recommends it.

but York was lovely - we were at the open day a few weeks ago and everyone - students, staff, people in the cafe - all seemed really happy. I was so impressed with the history department- they all turned out to speak to the prospective applicants and they all seemed happy and engaged.

AyeFairEnough · 11/10/2026 09:38

ESAT on Tuesday here and the nerves are definitely kicking in. He doesn’t think he’ll score well enough but what will be will be.

QueenMabby · 11/10/2026 09:53

DD’s practice scores for ESAT have varied wildly. Someone she knows is going this year with a score of about 4.8 so she knows it’s not all about getting a high score but she’s definitely feeling the pressure.
