Hi everyone, here's the new thread!

OP posts:
inae · 12/03/2026 09:35

@MyGreyBiscuit well done to him and welcome back to the waiting pool - for Southampton! 😂

I'm not sure yet if I'm going to the Sheffield OHD with DD (she might go alone or with a friend who has an offer for another course). If I do go, I will mainly pay attention to accomodation options and perhaps things like placements locations or assesment methods.

MyGreyBiscuit · 12/03/2026 09:36

mumsneedwine · 12/03/2026 09:34

Love Sheffield ! Great, cheap city and fab course.

No Uni will look at a new UCAT score for this years entry. Can redo it if think going to reapply but won't help this year.

yes, as his father and I are alumni, there's that sentimental side of things as well!

no, I meant with the new UCAT and hopefully fab A levels, it could help take the pressure off when applying next year... although there were some random rumours milling about some universities (don't remember which,...Newcastle?!) accepting new UCATs in August... but don't quote me.

OP posts:
inae · 12/03/2026 09:53

@mumsneedwine is it worth booking UCAT for later in the cycle (say 20 Sep), even if you hold offers now, just in case they miss a grade and their place? I think you can get a full refund if not taking the test?

Or is this an overkill?

Edited

I was wondering this too @inae - thinking maybe to book it for end Sept (or whenever the last date is) just in case

Thanks @PurryGrowls and @MyGreyBiscuit . MIL lived with us for the past 20 years so has been a constant in DDs life and will be much missed. As she has been in hospital for a long time it has helped DD adjust to her not being here. MIL was always so invested in DDs journey to med so she is taking that as her positive drive to make grandma proud which is a relief.

Well done on the Sheffield offer @MyGreyBiscuit , lots for your DS to consider now, even without the further decisions coming in. We are going to Newcastle OHD on Saturday with DD and then she needs to start thinking about firm and insurance (still to hear from Liverpool but not sure that will change her decision much whatever the outcome now).

@Ceruleanmoon sorry to hear no offers. the thought of another UCAT is daunting, but as the others have said all our YP need to get those grades now, so options will be open next year for your YP if they decide that is what they want.

I've been away from my desk for a couple of days - just to update you, we've had an offer from Sheffield! :) the wait is real! and son has agreed to let me attend offer holder day at QM - LOL!!! so, for those who've attended offer holder days, what sorts of things are you looking out for? I'm guessing deep dive into actual curriculum (at least for the kids) and also things like costs, housing...?

I went to my niece's OHD last year (she's a deferred entry to Keele this September) and went in the parents' talk. The curriculum structure and teaching & learning methods were outlined. What was interesting was to hear from a first year and a year 4 student and be able (with others) to ask them questions about their views on the course structure, clinical experience, housing etc. We were able to continue the conversation with them outside afterwards.

We looked at housing on campus, which underlined my niece's desire NOT to live on campus! She's already opted and out down the deposit for off-campus accommodation (she's an unconditional offer holder).

My niece is an athlete (she's currentlyon an athletic scholarship in America), so we were interested to see the sports facilities - if your YP has interests they wish to continue, investigating the opportunities and facilities is also a good thing to do.

Ive been logging on waiting for you to report an offer as you have waited patiently whilst others got theirs.

genuinely delighted for you and ds

Thefatbutteredpig · 12/03/2026 11:48

We booked a new ucat slot for end Sept as belt and braces plan if dc didnt get the grades on results day. We then cancelled it on results day.

Ceruleanmoon · 11/03/2026 17:41

Congratulations on the offers
@Curlyshabtree and @Thefatbutteredpig

@KatyapupI agree with others. It’s been a lot to manage mock revision, interview prep etc so a dip in mock grades can happen. Now the interviews are done the focus can just be on exam prep and getting the grades up.

Not great news for my YP as she didn’t get an offer after the only medicine interview she had. Probably reapplying next year but undecided at the moment with the disappointment and with contemplating going through the application process again. Might be less stressful with grades in hand but another summer of UCAT prep might be ahead.

Thank you

There were a couple if schools in clearing last year.

Kings sometimes goes into ucas extra.

Usually like 24-48 h before results day the uni might be advertising on ucas

thanks so much for this!! Will make notes!

It was my note-taking and question-asking skills (as well as my funding of the tuition fees!) that prompted my brother to ask me along. I typed up my notes immediately and gave them to my niece.

Still lurking although DD now in 3rd year.

I just wanted to reiterate the advice from @mumsneedwine and others. DC was phoned on results day from a uni she'd previously been rejected from (after interview) offering her a place (completely out of the blue - she hadn't contacted them, didn't think she was on a waitlist). Another family friend had been contacted the year before just as A levels started telling her to ring them on results day if she got her 3xAs and they expected to be able to offer her a place.

I know these instances are rare, but there is still a glimmer of hope. Smash the A levels and you never know what might happen and if you don't end up with a place, then you're in a great position to apply again.

May I ask which uni contacted you and your friend? We’re still waiting on offers after two rejections, plan B is gap year but this may also be an option 🤞

Hi all. After putting plan b together, she got an offer from Sheffield last night! It was the first night she hadn’t been frantically checking her emails at 6pm and the offer had come through.

I am so pleased for her. She was so convinced it would be a rejection after people started to get offers at the start of last week.

inae · 12/03/2026 17:29

@Tsuipen that's fantastic! Congrats to your DD! Really glad for you. Now focus on getting those AAA :)

DDs school friend just got pooled by Newcastle today (why can't they all use waitlist or reserve or whatever term) and they have 2 pre-interview rejections and waiting for Liverpool, which has low post offer rates. Tough wait from now on.
