Dentistry 2026 entry, part 1

Inspired by the Medicine 2026 entry thread, I thought I'd start a Dentistry one!

Anyone have a child applying?

It's my first time supporting a UCAS application and I'd love some other parental support!

DS2 recently completed the UCAT, scored 2100 and Band 2. Predicted A Level grades are Biology A*, Chemistry A, and Maths A. He's also completing an EPQ on a topic related to Dentistry.
His GCSE's are
9 maths
8 biology, physics
7 chemistry, further maths, comp science
6 English language, DT
5 English Lit
M2 Music studies

We live in East Anglia, the dentistry desert! UEA are building a dentistry school but it won't be ready in time for this round of applications.
He loves Sheffield but his English GCSE score will rule it out I think. Still doing lots of research but time is ticking on!

Can I join you? DS also applying for dentistry this year and I’ve been following the Medicine thread but they do have a lot more choice.

Apologies if you already have it but Medichut have a strategic application guide for dentistry that is free to download that is quite useful as has all the information in one place.

What about Leeds as an option? I think that would be ok for both UCAT and GCSEs.

My DB went to UEA many years ago and still have fond memories of visiting him there it’s a shame it won’t be ready in time.

I will put DS stats in a separate post.

WillWorries · 14/09/2025 12:31

Amasamas, please do join me!

I've just downloaded the Medichut doc, that's fab 👌 I'd seen something similar from the GDC before but the Mh one has some more useful bits on, thank you 😊

Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle are DS preferences at the moment.

How has your Ds done for work experience?

OP posts:
Amasamas · 14/09/2025 13:39

Not great tbh we’ve struggled a bit and one that we thought we had lined up fell through over the summer due to staff being off etc. How about yours?

Amasamas · 14/09/2025 14:25

We have:

GCSEs

8x 9, 2x 8, 1x 7 (English Lang)
A Levels predicted 2x A star 1x A (Chemistry, Biology & Maths)
UCAT 2340 Band 2

At the moment he wants to put down Newcastle & Sheffield definitely and will probably now put Bristol due to high UCAT (it wasn’t really considered before as he wants to go north). Then it will be Leeds or Manchester I think.

IWasThere4Aug12 · 14/09/2025 22:01

DS Y12 is interested in applying for dentistry - any advice gratefully appreciated as we know v little about the application process. Some of the questions I have:

Is EPQ helpful and if so does it matter what topic?

How much work experience does he need?
How important is it to visit university open days and when is the best time to go? From reading med school threads it seems you apply strategically and where you might want to go isn’t much of a factor. We don’t live in UK so numerous visits won’t be easy
When does he need to start working towards UCATs?

WillWorries · 17/09/2025 16:42

Amasamas DS has not achieved any work experience in a dental surgery. This is probably the bit that worries me most.
He's got a job working with the public and has volunteered in the science labs as part of his Gold Duke of Edinburgh. He's attended a couple of Dentistry insight days at Uni's and done some online courses.

IWasThere4Aug12 Where are you if not in the UK? If you are applying for Medicine or Dentistry in the UK, you have to have already completed the UCAT before you complete your UCAS application which has a deadline of 15th October 2025 this year.

My dc is a dentist, 4th year . I would say to definitely go to open days, the one at Leeds uni provided the template for her personal.statement and they got 4 interviews off the back of it.
Although I'm not sure whether the PS is a thing now? But I still think it may help with interviews/situational judgement etc.

IWasThere4Aug12 · 17/09/2025 22:02

We’re Channel Islands so UK curriculum etc but difficult/costly to get to numerous open days. We may prioritize Leeds based on what tripleginandtonic said. DS is Y12 so we have another year but this is the only dentistry specific thread I’ve found and it’s so helpful to hear the advice of others-thanks all

Amasamas · 20/09/2025 10:39

@WillWorriesDS is similar in that he doesn’t have much WEx but has volunteering etc. When does your DS have to have his PS in? DS school has a deadline of next Friday for all early entry courses. I’m still trying to persuade him to leave the fifth place blank for now and have a think about what to put there in the time before the January deadline. I think he’ll probably go for Biochemistry but not sure where.

@tripleginandtonicthe PS is still a thing although this year they have changed the format so it is split into 3 questions rather than free format. How is your DC enjoying the course?

@IWasThere4Aug12 we did open days in June/July this year. DS had just finished mocks and with pretty much all of Y12 under his belt we had a better picture of what his predicted grades might be. Although you can’t set your hopes on any one place we found it useful to make sure it was definitely what he wanted to do. You might be lucky and get 2 in over a weekend - Sheffield/Leeds/Manchester/Newcastle/Liverpool in some sort of combination might work as most are connected by train. Re UCAT DS booked his test for the end of the summer holidays. He had 2 month subscription for Medify and used that and the official UCAT mocks during the last week before his test. He didn’t really start working on it until the holidays and did a little bit most days then the last 2 weeks did a full mock again most days and just review the sections he’d not done so well on. That’s just what worked for him though and I’m slowly learning that he knows how he works best and I don’t need to nag him anymore as I did before GCSEsBlush.

goplacidlyamidthenoise · 24/11/2025 08:50

I found this thread again, wondered where it had gone but we must all have been busy. I read but didn't post previously.

How's it going for everyone ?

She's a dentist now, 3rd year GDT. Has only positive things to say about dentistry

goplacidlyamidthenoise · 24/11/2025 11:29

@tripleginandtonic

That's great to hear. Have heard mixed reports from medicine graduates.

Feedback from those involved in the process is of the opinion that dentistry is harder to secure a Uni course place for than medicine but I've not seen any stats one way or the other

Amasamas · 24/11/2025 14:29

@tripleginandtonicthat is good to hear.

@goplacidlyamidthenoise we are still in the what feels like interminable wait for interview offers. Is your YP a current applicant.

Re Med vs. Dentistry I think it’s mainly that there are so many more places for Medicine and Universities that offer it. That’s harder at this stage too as quite a lot already have interview invites whereas I think only Bristol and QUB have sent any dentistry ones so far.

goplacidlyamidthenoise · 24/11/2025 15:13

@Amasamas , yes, DC has applied.

UCAT score was good + B1, so fingers are crossed for Bristol but things seem on hold there. I believe they do stuff in phases from a bit of research. It appears that last year's interviewees had to make a model to show/talk about at interview but other than that we know little of what any interview format will be.
Nothing yet from any of the more Northern Uni choices.

Sandyshandy · 24/11/2025 22:36

Another one waiting here!

Seaswimmers1 · 25/11/2025 22:25

Manchester dentistry rejections are starting to come through today it would seem. Seems like may be a very high ucat threshold this year!

Amasamas · 26/11/2025 21:08

@Seaswimmers1have Manchester sent out any invites or is it just rejections?

@goplacidlyamidthenoiseI’d heard it was a pasta habitat this year rather than an animal that Bristol are requesting but again not much more than that.

postitnot · 27/11/2025 19:16

If your DCs haven't done work experience, what attracts them to doing dentistry? How will they know that they'll enjoy it as a career?

goplacidlyamidthenoise · 28/11/2025 00:42

good question @postitnot . It's not like they can do any "hands on" work experience but they can do observational work experience.

I had a couple of a major courses of treatment and as dc was showing an interest in dentistry, appointments were booked for after school hours and they were allowed to observe with my dentist talking dc through the work they were doing. This led to dc asking if a few days of observing would be possible in school holidays, and this was agreed subject to individual patient consent.

I guess they need to be able to reflect on the "work experience" they could manage and show what they took away from it in terms of their passion/fit for following that career path.

Crwysmam · 28/11/2025 01:52

Dentist here. I’m at the end of my career and currently just doing 1 day a week privately. I have had a long and happy career. Managed to avoid litigation and still love the job.
Interestingly my son showed no interest in following me into the profession, neither of my nieces wanted to join my DSis, who is also a dentist. I suspect they have been exposed to the reality of the profession.
Firstly it’s not for the faint hearted. It’s not glamorous, despite the thousands of TicToks by young dentists. There is a strong bias towards choosing it as a potentially high income career. It does pay well but there are much easier ways to make money than dentistry.

You are only really going to be happy in the job if you genuinely enjoy helping people. You need a strong moral compass and the ability to put ethics first and foremost. We are currently seeing an epidemic of patients returning from abroad having chosen discount dentistry with dentists who have no ethics.

Being able to demonstrate a vocation and awareness of standards of practice should help.
I have attached a link to current standards which is well worth a read. https://www.gdc-uk.org/DownloadHelper.aspx?docID=b3fb1d71-b8d8-467d-9f63-1a5dac5e62f1
There is a lot of information on the GDC site.
If you have come across the “Student Room” it’s worth joining. It’s a forum for and by students with chats about courses and all areas of student life.
Dentistry is a unique course since you are very much hands on from the start, working on real patients. The course is more like an apprenticeship in that it’s long hours and in the clinical years is very much 9-5. And with shorter holidays there isn’t much scope for a part time job so good financial support is essential. I was lucky, I trained in an era where tuition was paid but my parents funded three of us through five year courses ( my youngest sister did a phd in genetic biology) We were all on minimum grant ( similar to minimum maintenance loan today) so we owe our education to my mum returning to work to fund us.

As a student you spend a lot of time with other dental students building a lifelong network of dental friends. I am due to attend an annual reunion of the friends I shared a house with for 4 yrs, next month. It is 44 yrs since we all first met but have stayed in touch since then. And we keep in touch via What’s App group. We went to each others weddings, in fact two of them married each other and I have always felt that the boys were like adopted big brothers.

I will miss work when I retire fully but I do feel that I have achieved something in life. I’m just a big standard general practitioner but still leave work with a smile on my face when I’ve fixed a problem or improved someone’s smile. I’m now seeing grandchildren of patients I first started to see when I started in practice. I’ve cried with patients who’ve lost husbands, celebrated births and conquered nervous patients fears. It’s not all about the comfortable living.

If your DCs haven't done work experience, what attracts them to doing dentistry? How will they know that they'll enjoy it as a career?

Money, flexibility, using their brains and hands, teamwork with dental nurses, hygienist, a variety of work.

goplacidlyamidthenoise · 28/11/2025 20:48

@Crwysmam - thankyou so much for your post.

postitnot · 29/11/2025 08:48

I am also a dentist and agree with everything @Crwysmam has said. I just worry that its such a competitive process these days, and maybe attracts people who haven't been able to do work experience and so the job doesn't live up to expectations.

Don't get me wrong, I love my job. I work in the community dental service and work with special needs patients and children. It's really rewarding, and there are other really interesting paths in dentistry too. But I do think young people need to have a pretty good idea of the day to day job before they commit to 5 years training and the debt that goes with it.

Neither of my children are going to do it, I'm not saying I put them off (neither wanted to do science Alevels so it was a non starter) but I'm not sad about it! Don't think I could cope with the stress... I got in with BBC 30 years ago, and what I lack in academic prowess I like to think I make up in empathy 😀

WillWorries · 07/12/2025 21:14

Ah, I lost track of my own thread and there's been some great posts on it!

DS ended up applying for Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. Not heard anything from the first 3 but he's been invited to interview for Manchester in February!

How are other people doing?
