Too early for a Medicine 2027 thread?

Just wondered if there was any interest in a medicine 2027 thread for those of us with YP going into year 12 who plan to apply for medicine? I've seen one or two lurking previously and will try to tag if I can find their user names. Just conscious that I am always posting on the 2026 thread, yet DD is a year behind them and so my comments aren't so relevant.

Please come and join me here if you are interested.

Oh and ALL new musical schools are under the control of an old medical school for at least the first 5 years. Using their set up, staff and curriculum. You'd think experts in medical education would know this though.

eg Imperial running Pears Cumbria
Kings running Portsmouth

This person on Reddit is really worth a follow. Has broken down every medical school with all the info you could ever need. All free !

Just a little update on the work ethic & maturity I’m sure all of our DC’s are showing.

DD started the official UCAT revision tests so that she has two a week pre the actual exam.
Medic mentor summer school actually advised everyone to do their exam as late as possible but mine said no way as then she’d be straight back to school & A-levels with no break.
She planned it so she has exactly two weeks free after her UCAT with lots of lovely stuff planned & a little A-level refresher ready for year 13.

Her exam is next Wednesday & getting 2120 & 2190 in the 2 mocks she’s done already (doing the 3rd now & the 4th on Sunday) she has hit over the 2000 she was aiming for, for confidence.
She feels Monday & Tuesday she should do limited (2 hrs a day) which will include a medic mentor group session as she said if she does more she’ll risk burn out or/and dropping her score which will knock her confidence.

I think our kids deserve a huge amount of respect for their dedication & commitment & wish every single one of them success in the Exam & again in their A-level finals.

My DS did the same, the two days before his ucat did nothing.(not his usual MO as he did all his yr 12 mocks on a cram the night before basis) I made him binge watch a movie marathon with me the day before to keep his mind off it. He also stopped doing mocks about a week before after getting a good mock C score and felt that if he then had a dodgy one it would knock his confidence. I think the final week is all about going in to it mentally in a good place. Good luck to your DD next weds. I think it’s much better to get it out of the way!

The same here. DD has a bit more than a week to go and will take a break today and next weekend from UCAT. I feel for her as she has had no proper break since school finished. I agree with Zokaluse73, huge amount of respect for all YPs who are going through this process.

Hi everyone! I hope your ucat prep/sitting ucats has gone well. I have another silly question.

the myucat strategic guide has been useful but it seems to be formatted for 26 entry not 27. Do universities change their scoring/admissions policies at short notice, or am I looking at what will most likely be the policy for 27 in the 26 document?

I understand ucat cut offs change slightly year on year I’m more interested in whether policies dramatically change. I see Newcastle changed theirs relatively recently after the ucat went from 3600-2700 scoring.

they don’t change their requirements for GCSE & A-Levels yearly but UCAT totally depends on the scores of that years cohort & the cut offs won’t show until unis offer & then it will become available through company’s that track it.

Zokaluse73 · 20/08/2026 15:54

So UCAT all done for my DD! YAY!

She said it couldn’t have gone any worse & she lost around 45 seconds as soon as she pressed start. The invigilator tapped her on the shoulder & when my DD looked around she said ‘are you chewing’ my daughter gave a strong ‘no I am not’ and turned back to the screen but was flustered so took a bit to get back on track & didn’t get to see the last question. She said QR was harder than any mocks she’d done & she did not think she scored well.
She then unfolded the letter & burst into happy amazed tears as she got 2360 & band 1. She feel she lost a few VR marks due to that flustered start.
Very proud of her & so pleased she can relax for a bit now.

Wishing those who’ve got their test looming the best of luck.

I’d advise against this. You are stating you are fit by taking the test so if you are ill you need to be able to rebook (or if there is congestion and you miss getting to the test on time). So at minimum I would recommend a date before the last rebooking date. Then it is probably easier to focus if you are not also doing school work so that brings us back to before the end of the summer holidays. I do think a few days break after it is important too.

Early sitters tend to get higher scores (probably because on average they are likely to be more organised) so the scores for the deciles tend to drop slightly between the interim results publish by UCAT and the final scores.

sorry, what I meant was, do they change how the weighting is done? So if a med school has a ucat requirement for interview and then states it uses ucat and GCSEs post interview as 50% of the scoring, is that likely to change between years at short notice? (Working out what extra open days to go to!)

Congrats to her!! DS had a similar shitshow of an exam was convinced he’d completely fluffed it 🤦🏻‍♀️

I don’t think they change them regularly but it’s always worth checking ones on your YP’s list.

2027 application processes are all on line and wont change. But no one knows what UCAT cut offs will be 🤷‍♀️

They do change how they select from time to time but everything advertised now for 2027 entry will be fixed. It is worth bearing in mind that changes do sometimes happen if comparing historical data though.

The myucat strategic application guide is brilliant and very thorough. I imagine the 2027 one will be available very soon but in the meantime I'd suggest cross-referencing against the info on the individual uni websites (just for the ones you're particularly interested in!) to be certain.

Yes, they do change them and sometimes as late as September. Bastards

No they don't. They won't change them now. All 2027 info is in the websites.

Secondary guides (sources that are not the universities themselves) might update their information late - especially around UCAT as universities may only publish their admission statistics for 2026 entry in the early autumn. They may also have varying degrees of overall accuracy. Hence it is always important to check the university websites, or directly with the university admissions if not covered there. The information the universities have published for 2027 entry will not change as to do so after people have potentially already applied would be changing the terms of the contract after it has been agreed by the applicant (UCAS opened for 2027 in May with complete applications able to be submitted on 1 September).

So does that mean (hypothetically) if my YP submitted their ucas application on 1st September and a uni had yet to publish their 27 admissions policy it would have to adhere to their 26 policy as that’s all the student had to go on?

Asking all this as Newcastle is our number 1 uni and it hasn’t published 27 admissions policy yet. The 26 policy fits DS’s profile extraordinarily well and if they made a sweeping change to it we might need a rethink!
