Apprenticeship Withdrawn

Perplexed20 · 10/07/2025 07:13

Not sure why I'm writing apart from maybe to vent.
Ds applied for a degree apprenticeship with the civil service. Tests and interview in April. He applied with A level results in hand. A*AA (requirement is CCC).They took until the end of June to let people know. He was told successful and then yesterday they withdrew his offer and put him on the reserves list (dept he was allocated now not doing). He does have a uni offer but in a different subject he's now not sure about.
Anyone had experience of this? Any advice. He's pretty upset and want to support him in making the right decision for him.

Op… does your son have enough… fun? Socialise? Romantic interests? Sport? Hobbies?

What an odd question.

NotDonna · 30/07/2025 22:48

@Ademasstudio what???? Please explain yourself

NotDonna · 30/07/2025 22:50

Agh @Platosrevenge that’s really shit!! Do hope something bigger and better cones along x

Perplexed20 · 31/07/2025 13:19

Yes has fun. Does have hobbies. Just doesn't drink or very occasionally. But why?

I just asked because it he finished school, then spent a year working full time, and now this crushing disappointment. Doesn’t want to go to uni because worried about the debt, and you worried about him going to uni and “being miserable” and “not having a good experience”… I simply wondered whether he had fun and socialised.

did he pass his driving test last week?

Perplexed20 · 31/07/2025 17:56

Everyone is different.
He is very funny and very balanced.
Thank you for your concern and it does feel like you are projecting.

Because he doesn't really want to go. I've said that earlier in the thread.

Thanks for the help on this thread. I'll come back at some point and update if there is anything different to add. Really appreciate the advice etc.

This is a resilient lad. Read the thread.
Of course it was a shock and disappointment be he’s handled it well and there’s now another plan that he’s looking ahead too. He’s moving on, as we all have to when life throws us a curve ball. Good on him!

There are plenty of ways to have fun that don’t involve uni. He’s going to make friends and learn loads. And although the moving away wasn’t the plan he sounds exactly the ling of person to embrace it and make the most of it. It’s still a brilliant opportunity. And his parents have still got his back. He’s going to do great.

Roothewheel · 07/08/2025 08:46

Has your son gone through all the checks and now all progressing with the second choice apprenticeship OP? Are they going to support him at all in the move across the country? I hope so at 18!

Perplexed20 · 15/08/2025 09:21

So not good news and I hadn't previously updated this thread because of some of the odd responses. His second offer was again withdrawn for funding reasons 2 weeks later. To be honest, I was fuming. It feels very unprofessional and whilst he emails for updates they dont respond.

However, I think were at decision points. Hes decided not to go to Uni this year and is applying for another job in the organisation he currently works in to give him time to think about his options and what he really wants to do. We completely support him in this and Im sure it will all work out in the end.

Really sorry to hear this OP - I've been following your thread and hoping for good news.

I'm often annoyed when people say (with the best of intentions) "don't go to uni - an apprenticeship is much better" as I think that massively underplays the fact that good apprenticeships are incredibly hard to get onto.

Wishing your DS all the best with his next steps.

GreenSweeties · 15/08/2025 11:14

Oh I'd hoped for a positive update for your clearly very able son.

Between this thread and the grad scheme cancelled one, kids are going to have to hold multiple offers (if they can get them until the last minute).

The CS placement scheme was better in that it told you that being successful at interview didn't guarantee a job. They made some offers and wait listed others. Offers not rescinded but I think it might have been centrally managed so if a particular department dropped out they found you another spot. Ghosting him not on.

Londonmummy66 · 15/08/2025 12:09

I'm so sorry to hear this. I do think that taking time to decide what he wants to do rather than jumping at the uni course because it is there is a good idea though. I wish him well - he has had rotten luck in this - but he sounds like a really impressive young man and I am sure he will fly at whatever he decides to do in the future.

NotDonna · 15/08/2025 16:25

Agh that’s gutting. He really does sound very able! Definitely their loss! Good luck to him and his future.

HardworkSendHelp · 10/07/2025 07:45

That is typical civil service. So they had a requirement of 3 c’s and your son has an A*AA and they don’t take him🙈🙈🙈 No wonder the country is bucked!!
I would be fuming OP that is so unfair. That is just wasting your sons time and energy applying for something being offered it and then getting it taken away.

They have taken him he just has to wait until a.vacancy comes up. The Department he was initially assigned to isn't taking apprentices anymore another one might be
He is on the Reserve List waiting for a relevant vacancy .
OP did he ask for a specific Department? Or type of role or was it policy in any department?

Perplexed20 · 15/08/2025 20:09

You have to apply for a particular department. He was offered what he wanted what he wanted originally in both dept and location . The second offer was a different dept and location. Both withdrawn due to funding.
Now the A level results have come out and he hasnt heard (they haven't replied to emails) then it is highly unlikely he will be offered anything.

OP posts:
Returnofjude · 21/08/2025 08:34

Both offers have been withdrawn? Even the one involving the long distance move?

Returnofjude · 21/08/2025 08:35

They are messing around with young people just starting out - utterly reckless of these departments.

Callalilly2016 · 21/08/2025 08:46

I’m really sorry op and must be very disappointing for your DS. Civil Service is undergoing savage cuts in every department and this is one of the consequences. It’s poor that he has only just found out. Unfortunately, many departments have only just received confirmation of their budgets and this has delayed these types of decisions. If he has the opportunity to do a degree course instead that will give him more options in the future, including coming back to the civil service if that’s still what he wants. Best of luck to him.

averythinline · 21/08/2025 12:18

I think there's likely to be more cuts in civil service not less.. i would advise he goes to Warwick and looks at Grad schemes after with those grades

I wouldn't suggest another year out
