My DD is graduating next month.
What is the norm re graduation gifts, is this something parents do?

Very much a personal thing. Some universities have an online shop where you can buy items with their crest or logo on. You can get teddies in a cap and gown ( some from uni shops)
Mortar board charms are available too e.g.Pandora.
A nice leather satchel or bag is another idea.

Judiezones · 10/06/2025 17:42

We gave our nephews money when they graduated, in whichever way suited them (e.g. cash or gift card) and we gave our neice jewellery that I knew she wanted.

mumonthehill · 10/06/2025 17:49

Ds was going on holiday with his gf afterwards so we gave him money for a posh meal out when they were away. We also went out and paid for a meal after the ceremony and drinks.

My parents took me to an amazing restaurant and gave me a watch. Mid 90s.

littlemissprosseco · 10/06/2025 18:32

We bought watches

CarpetKnees · 10/06/2025 18:49

Not a thing with anyone I am aware of.
Only time I've heard it is on MN

We took ours out for a nice meal on the day, and we paid for the gown etc. / all expenses for the graduation.

D1 turned 21 the day after her last finals paper. We sent six bottles of pink fizz and roses on the day and suggested she choose some jewellery as a joint 21st/Graduation present. When she graduated a couple of months later, we paid for the gown hire etc and a lovely meal in the evening.
I also like the city map prints you can get (eg Etsy or Not on the High St) or the more specific uni city ones like these from Lucy Loves

Pleased to read this.!

This is what we're doing next month - paid for gown and will be paying for a nice meal out.

Yes. I have only heard of this on MN.

However, as DD's birthday was the day after, I took her for a joint birthday/ graduation tasting menu lunch at her favourite TV chef's Michelin starred restaurants a month later. It was a memorable and perfect day out.

We also took her out for a meal on the day of her graduation.

I always think the degree certificate is the well-earned gift and everything else is superfluous.

If you earned it, then it’s not a gift.

grownuplefthome · 11/06/2025 19:52

We gave DD four figure amount of money when she graduated

HatesHorsesLovesShein · 11/06/2025 20:09

I’m more looking forward to not giving my dd a three figure amount of money every month.

EwwSprouts · 11/06/2025 20:12

@HatesHorsesLovesShein Yep!

I've booked a fancy restaurant for dinner and he's said he would like to come on a family holiday with us this summer.

screwyou · 11/06/2025 20:12

DD graduates next month. I have just given her a chunk of change for her holiday. On the day we are going to The Ivy and I will be paying for her gown hire, this and the airbnb we have had to book has cost me a bomb.

RosesAndHellebores · 11/06/2025 20:14

We paid for the Masters and DPhil that followed.

donotaskmesillyquestions · 11/06/2025 20:31

We gave ours a hardback of Dr Seuss “Oh the places you’ll go.” It says everything you want to say to them, on the cusp of their brave new life.

ramonaquimby · 11/06/2025 20:31

We've paid for a well deserved holiday , plus will pay for gown hire, meals out etc on the day and air BnB rental in the uni city.
I grew up in Canada and grad presents very much the norm, starting with high school before uni degrees, etc

We are lucky to be able to do this, we're so proud of them 😊

Oh yes! Bought this and tucked it away somewhere. I have a (very very old) copy somewhere haha)

😂Same!

Two years til DD graduates and I've started saving for us to good on holiday to the States when she graduates.

Not even a gift to yourself?

donkeymcdonkface · 12/06/2025 06:19

We are getting my dd jewellery her grandfather has bought her a personalised Aspinall journal which is gorgeous. Also paying for two nights/dinners etc at graduation. And taking her to the Emma Bridgewater decorating studio as the uni is not far from there and we are both collectors and have visited numerous times during the five years. So so proud, want to reward her outstanding hard work.

AlsoAnon · 16/06/2025 14:11

Flowers! Thankfully DD’s BF was on the case as that had passed me by. Otherwise, as PP have said, a special meal out.

RampantIvy · 16/06/2025 14:17

Nearly all the students with flowers at DD's graduation were black or Asian. Is it a cultural thing?

It was DD's birthday the next day and she moved out of her houseshare the day after, so flowers would have been terribly impractical
