I personally didn't but I guess it's down to personal preference!

littlemissprosseco · 08/05/2025 20:14

My DDs all had rugs around the bed area. But I’d wait until you’ve seen the room. Can be narrow with furniture you can’t lift. So you can’t slide the rug underneath

Sounds good to me! Some people went all out, and others didn’t…. Most things ended up in the kitchen/lounge anyway to make it comfortable as a place to socialise!
my top tip for uni? (Despite fire doors) get a door stop…. Makes people drift to you/your room to make friends, but equally, if you’re feeling a little homesick or want your space, a shut door won’t likely get knocked on.
enjoy uni x

Yes. Even in DD's teeny tiny room, was nice.

TomatoSandwiches · 08/05/2025 20:16

Only if you turn it into a wall hanging.

Dodonutty · 08/05/2025 20:16

Not only does D have a rug and a heated airer, but also a fine collection of Le Creuset. She is in post grad halls though with a huge room

ramonaquimby · 08/05/2025 20:18

Can't your kid decide? Not being snarky

TheChosenTwo · 08/05/2025 20:18

Dd asked for one for Christmas this year for her uni room 😂
she really loved it and mil bought it for her, dd said it reminded her of one of mil’s.
Im not sure dd2 will bother but maybe!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 08/05/2025 20:18

Yes. The carpets can be a bit grim.

PansyPottering · 08/05/2025 20:22

It’s not normal or not normal. If she wants to get a rug then yes, if she doesn’t then no.

Some people take them and some don’t. My dd took one to halls because she wanted her room to look a certain way and it was a good way of bringing some colour in and making it less prison cell.

The best things we bought for DD to make uni room feel cosier, rug, plug in fairy lights, mattress topper, lamp and fluffy blanket.

Plug in fairy lights are very commonly on the list of things not allowed in student accommodation. Battery-powered ones are usually no problem. @JennyTals I would check the the regulations for the specific hall of residence before sending your DC off with 'furnishings' (or electrical items).

Triptothepark · 08/05/2025 22:10

DD1 and DD2 did, but DD3 had a new and clean carpet so didn't. She had more than one in her post halls house though!!

definitely if it's Lino, maybe if carpet.

MiddleAgedDread · 08/05/2025 22:11

We had weird old fashioned hard flooring in our roooms so pretty much everyone had a rug!

TheSmallAssassin · 08/05/2025 22:14

My daughter bought one herself a few weeks in, I don't think they'll know until they've seen their room. It's definitely not unheard of, but TBH it's up to your son or daughter.

Fordian · 08/05/2025 22:15

Sure, take a rug! You’re making it homely!

BestZebbie · 08/05/2025 22:16

We had rugs but also shared rooms, so good for marking territory!

AllrightNowBaby · 08/05/2025 22:17

Yes! Why not?

Lavender2015 · 08/05/2025 22:36

A rug is a lovely idea! Also agree on the mattress topper and throw. Uni bedrooms pretty depressing so would definitely dress it up when it’s my girls’ turn.

EwwSprouts · 08/05/2025 23:45

Because the gap between bed and desk was not huge, DS took a big bath mat instead of rug to brighten the room.

TianasBayou · 09/05/2025 03:48

Mine took rugs. Cheap ones from Ikea or supermarkets so they can be binned at the end. Preferably washable because they get absolutely minging.

Ponderingwindow · 09/05/2025 03:57

This takes me back. We had this old cracked linoleum. The local carpet store did a good business selling carpet “remnants” to students every fall. I’m fairly certain they sold enough “remnants” that they must have been just buying super cheap carpet in the ugliest colors possible in bulk and chopping it up, but it was in every single room in the building.

Oblomov25 · 09/05/2025 05:17

Ds1 bought himself one a few weeks in.

healthybychristmas · 09/05/2025 08:24

Someone I knew took his daughter to Halls, thought the room was horrible, went out and bought paint and new curtains and a rug to fit the whole floor. She was the first one to arrive as she was a day early and by the time the others arrived the following day they couldn't believe that she had the better room!
