Some carpets in halls of residence can be absolutely minging. A rug is a nice thing to have.

The best things we bought for DD to make uni room feel cosier, rug, plug in fairy lights, mattress topper, lamp and fluffy blanket.

Fairy lights weren't allowed in my DD's accommodation. In fact, all small electrical were banned apart from toothbrushes and hairdryers.

crumblingschools · 09/05/2025 10:37

DS wouldn’t really have had sufficient floor space for a rug. Also need to factor in space in car when transporting stuff

dogcatkitten · 09/05/2025 10:39

Carpets tend to be a bit rough so a nice soft rug by the bed is nice.

MellowPinkDeer · 09/05/2025 10:40

I absolutely took a rug!

Hoppinggreen · 09/05/2025 10:41

DD took one as she wasn't too sure about what the carpet would be like.
It isn't too bad but the rug matches her colour scheme better

dogcatkitten · 09/05/2025 10:42

We eventually got a (small) fridge, probably not allowed but someone was stealing all her fresh stuff out of the communal fridge!

Juja · 09/05/2025 10:58

DS took an old rug we were no longer using at home and it really cheered his room up and he didn't have to worry about spillages etc. I think DD has one too but can't honestly remember.
Rules on electrical items vary enormously between halls.

I had to get to uni via train (with a change in Manchester and at that time, you had to change stations, not platforms.) I was limited in what I could take, but fortunately, the decor was clean, just a bit dull. And I had my own room - a couple of my course-mates had to share and they loathed each other from the first day.

ChocolateCroissantCafe · 09/05/2025 11:12

I didn't but always used to think people's rooms with rugs looks so cosy and more of a proper home from home. Something easy to clean is ideal.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/05/2025 11:14

Our son did because it had hard floors.

Mikart · 09/05/2025 11:17

I did! Back in 1978

ProfessorFellatioHornblower · 09/05/2025 12:21

DD had a whole list of things she wasn't allowed in her room contract - any inflatable furniture, no bean bags - it was a long list, presumably of things students had previously left behind, set on fire or floated on the lake!

She's got a premium ensuite room and can still only walk sideways around the bed, there's no room for rugs let alone a blowup sofa.

What she did need was lots of storage crates/cubes/shelving for inside the wardrobe.

mimbleandlittlemy · 09/05/2025 12:33

Yes, my ds had a small rectangular rug from IKEA. The carpets in halls aren't lovely deep shag pile made of wool, but usually nylon and very much walked on/things spilled over. A rug made putting feet down from bed a nicer experience in all his rooms. It is, however, on the to-the-tip list when we do the final uni accommodation run in a few weeks time as it has had heavy wear.

breakdown98765 · 09/05/2025 13:06

I presumed this is a mature student/eager 17-year-old.

makes sense for it to be a parent but wtf are they doing ordering room decor.

Part of the experience either ransacking your great aunt’s bed linen and ‘borrowing’ your little brother’s old Peppa pig single cover for just when your main set is in the wash….

My gran took me to Wilko before freshers and I’ve got fond memories of picking out everything in lime green.

user2848502016 · 09/05/2025 16:53

Yes I had one. I would recommend cushions too, small ones for your bed and a floor cushion/beanbag - you will likely spend a lot of time visiting eachothers rooms so want seating options!

Ploeready · 09/05/2025 17:15

Both my sons did. They had a small rug to begin with because we didn't know their room sizes and we went back a week later to see them to tweak the room to whatever they wanted and to remove anything they didn't want/couldn't fit. Both at different unis.

Both my children are shoes off people so they had a plastic shoe thing from Ikea to put their shoes on and then the rugs from a certain point depending on the shape of the room. This all depends on how big the rooms are. Both of mine were/are in newly built halls with an en-suite but one is very tight compared to the other.

@breakdown98765 no spare bedding here, no spare kitchen stuff either and sadly no aunt's houses to raid as they had their own child going to uni at the same time or Grandmas to shop with, both long dead. All duvets, pillows, bedding, cushions and bathroom towels were all bought brand new and mainly online. It depends if you like shopping in physical shops. Ds2 has all Ds1's stuff as just as one finished one started.

TianasBayou · 09/05/2025 21:19

DC1 and I headed off to the local Ikea on results day and it was like a big party, bumping into old friends from primary school, scouts, sports etc as well as A level classmates.

We have two finishing in a few weeks and I am definitely encouraging ‘straight-to-tip’ for the over-worked frying pans, rugs, plastic tubs, pillows etc.

Communitywebbing · 09/05/2025 21:20

I would not buy anything before having lived in the room for a couple of days. You'll make better choices then. Hold your nerve!

BunnyRuddington · 10/05/2025 14:42

DS did but we ordered the stuff like mattress topper and rug from Dunelm for collection there so that we didn’t take up too much car space. Doesn’t help when they come back home for the summer though…Grin

WombatChocolate · 10/05/2025 18:52

It’s nice for them to plan what they might have in their room. Often they don’t realise many are tiny, but planning it is fun.
My DS has spent this year having his airer (not electric) confiscated by the cleaner - they are banned, due to mould apparently. Then the students go past the room where hundreds of confiscated airers are, with the room open and they pinch them back. The cleaner does ‘random’ checks and knocks their doors at similar times every couple of weeks. Often he can hide the airer and keep it for another couple of weeks, but sometimes he’s drying bedding and it gets taken again. It’s all a bit daft but he doesn’t seem bothered.
Fairy lights are allowed if battery apparently but I don’t think he’s got any. Hasn’t got a rug either as floor not big enough. Does have a cost blanket on bed and a cushion and seems to have space for a crate of beer - or empty box!

Flyswats · 11/05/2025 16:31

I took a very small rug that I'd woven in a class at school. It was just there by the bed. I can't remember everyone's room but this was quite normal. Have small rugs become passe? 😂
