Still waiting to hear from St Andrews - is that a bad sign?

DD has applied for English at St Andrews which will be her first choice if she gets an offer. She has heard back from everywhere else she applied. Also, there is an offer holders open day on 5 April so was really expecting to hear back in good time before that.
Does anyone involved in uni admissions know what it means that she has still not heard? Is it likely a ‘no’? Or doesn’t it mean anything to have not heard yet?
Thanks in advance for any wise words…

DS got rejected for a science course yesterday. He has 9A star GCSE’s FWIW.

Sorry to hear that. Does he know where he will firm now?

Sorry to hear about your DS. Hope he is excited about an offer he’s had from somewhere else

eta sorry that was in response to @Youngerthanthatnow

Thanks, @lucasnorth . Yes he's got offers elsewhere and excited about one in particular. St A was always a bit of a wildcard as the course wasn't exactly what he wanted, though it is well regarded. (I think possibly his PS reflected this.)

Very much hope your DD gets her offer. It does seem like a lovely uni.

My DD still waiting to hear ( also English but joint with French). She’s had offers from everywhere else ( Edinburgh only this morning)… Two unconditional for Scottish Unis ( we’re in Scotland) and two identical conditionals for rUK unis she liked. We have an offer holders day this weekend and after that she’ll likely firm one of the conditional offers and insure Edinburgh… and withdraw from St Andrews if not heard…

AshKeys · 07/04/2025 14:37

That is the other thing about making offers so late - you start to find good candidates are turning you down.

crumpleduppieceofpaper · 07/04/2025 16:28

Why DO they take so long? It’s very frustrating - Dd applied 6 months ago almost! I know the deadline was January but even that seems a long time ago now. What’s in it for them?!

Newgirls · 07/04/2025 17:07

I guess students have til May to get offers so St Andrews doesn’t feel the need to rush!

crumpleduppieceofpaper · 07/04/2025 21:56

@Newgirlsyes I guess so but it’s tough on the students who have applied when most of their friends have all their offers in now. Plus they have missed the offer holder day which was on Saturday 🤷‍♀️

Newgirls · 08/04/2025 08:59

Yes holding the offer day before all the offers have gone out isn’t helpful…

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 10/04/2025 17:25

DD just got an unconditional offer from St Andrews! So that’s unconditionals from Stirling, Edinburgh and St Andrews and conditionals from Nottingham and Queens… and complete bewilderment about what to accept/ firm except she knows not Stirling… hopefully offer holder at Queens this weekend will help decide… am aware it’s a good dilemma to have…

crumpleduppieceofpaper · 10/04/2025 17:39

@TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLongthat’s great news, well done to her! Are you based in Scotland?

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 10/04/2025 17:39

Which just goes to show it’s not too late for those with DCs still waiting to hear…

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 10/04/2025 17:47

@crumpleduppieceofpaperyes, we’re in Scotland.

crumpleduppieceofpaper · 10/04/2025 17:49

Do you think that makes a difference with regards to when you might hear?! I have no idea how it works but I have heard RUK are left til last - not sure if that’s true as I’m sure lots of RUK have offers by now! But still, you’re right, still good news coming in. Well done to your DD.

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 10/04/2025 17:57

I don’t know… eldest didn’t apply so this is first year we’ve dealt with them… several friends heard a month or so ago, but different subjects….

Youngerthanthatnow · 10/04/2025 22:52

Well done to your DD, @TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong ! Hope she gets a clear picture of what she wants from her offer holders' days. It's a good dilemma to have!

lucasnorth · 11/04/2025 12:53

Lovely news @TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong
We are still waiting, but fingers crossed

It’s a no for DD today. All A* predictions, great PS, not sure what else she could have done. Oh well - it’s a 10 hour trip for us so I’m not too sad. She has firmed Durham now with York as a back up.

hope others still waiting get better news.

Mia85 · 14/04/2025 14:11

Sorry to hear that, do you mind me asking which subject?

lucasnorth · 14/04/2025 14:40

Sorry to hear that @crumpleduppieceofpaper Hope your DD is excited about Durham.

crumpleduppieceofpaper · 14/04/2025 15:30

@Mia85mfl.

yes luckily very happy to firm Durham!

lucasnorth · 02/05/2025 21:36

Heard back late this afternoon and it’s a no ☹️
She has twelve GCSEs all at grade 9 and predicted 4 A*s and now both her first two choices have turned her down.
Am trying to be calm and reassuring on the outside but my inner toddler is screaming at the unfairness

@lucasnorth - sorry to hear that. I know from one of mine applying for medicine that rUK places can be in short supply. Does she have other offers from anywhere she likes? If not, maybe a gap year is an option?

crumpleduppieceofpaper · 02/05/2025 21:46

@lucasnorthoh I’m sorry, that’s so hard. I posted a couple of weeks ago we had the same thing, all A* predictions etc. it’s tough - there must be a lot of competition! What was her other choice? Has she got somewhere else she is happy with? My DD also had a no from Oxford despite 3 interviews so it’s been hard but she’s happy now with Durham.

lucasnorth · 02/05/2025 22:04

Thanks both. She has a couple of offers she’s thinking about and also considering a gap year. Because she got the message so late today she’s not going to be able to talk to any of her teachers til Tuesday.
and in the worlds worst timing DH and I are leaving at five tomorrow morning to go away for the weekend 😔 My parents are staying over so she won’t be on her own but I feel awful leaving
Glad to hear your DD is now happy with her choice @crumpleduppieceofpaper

off to sleep now before early start but really appreciate both your kind messages ❤️

She will be fine - it’s such a tough time but I always have faith things will work out for the best, even if it doesn’t seem it now. She’s clearly a very bright girl who will be brilliant - St Andrews are fools for not accepting them! Enjoy your weekend away and all the best for her exams 😊
