Anyone else's DC taking the TMUA test this week? DD is busy doing a bit of practice now. She'll need a fairly decent score. I wish she'd gone for the Jan sitting now!

@Frowningprovidence my DD does do FM but she's hoping to do maths at uni. I think most who take the TMUA now aren't applying for maths so many won't have FM. TMUA format/style of questions does take a bit of getting used to so definitely recommend working through the past papers. She did it from oldest papers to most recent as they have definitely got harder over recent years and at first didn't time herself but just did a few questions each day. Having said that, she does think she didn't perform well enough on the day.

@notagain12345 thanks for this : )

Thank you @autumndays13
That's really helpful.

Upperroom · 27/11/2024 09:23

@autumndays13 the wait continues!! 🤯 good idea your dd has gone to college! Website still loading here 😱🤯

Upperroom · 27/11/2024 09:27

@Frowningprovidence my dc does FM, yes. The tmua is for cs, economics and maths generally and for the most competitive courses so generally applicants also have FM.
I think the test is possibly harder than FM. There are lots of past papers online. Good luck to your dc - the wait is hard!

Gina555 · 27/11/2024 12:22

Scored really low and thought I had done so much better.

Upperroom · 27/11/2024 12:32

I’m so sorry to hear that @Gina555 do you have other choices in your ucas application that don’t look at the tmua? Not all is lost, concentrate on your a levels x

autumndays13 · 27/11/2024 12:37

@Gina555 I'm sorry to hear that too.

I just heard from DD. Definitely not a score she would have wanted but it was fairly expected. Still disappointing though.
You all probably know this but they have changed the scoring this year so what would have been 6.5 is now roughly a 5.

@ladybee2 I'm sorry to hear he's disappointed. My DD got a similar score and is feeling pretty disappointed too (though I actually think that score is not terrible). It equates to a roughly 5.5 last year.

Can anyone shed light on the grading change for the TMUA being talked about on Reddit ? Can’t seem to find anything definitive on Warwick website and DD has just got a score today well under all her practice scores and doesn’t know if that means she is out of the running or not.

Coldilocks · 27/11/2024 23:47

All I know is that a 5 is the old 6.5.

NotAnotherFeckingMuftiDay · 28/11/2024 04:23

Cathbot - My DD also had what she thought was a lower than expected score and was a bit disappointed until she read about the change in scoring this year.

I've not seen anything from Warwick yet, but Durham mentions the change in scoring on their site.

There is also an explanation of TMUA scores for this year on this site.

Here you go. Sorry about Chatbot Holly.

autumndays13 · 28/11/2024 07:19

UAT had said they would send an explanation of the new scoring system with the results, but that didn't seem to happen. If it wasn't for stumbling across the explanation on the Durham website, we'd might not have known about it.
DD slowly beginning to feel more positive about her score and her options which is a relief. It's hard to see their confidence knocked. Just have to remember we that the mere fact of them taking this test is because they are all brilliant.

Thank you very much- very late into a difficult evening I found a few comments on student chat boards but nothing that looked properly official and she hasn’t had any emails. What had really upset her was she came out thinking it had gone ok/ as expected and then got a far lower score than any practise exam so it completely knocked her confidence to judge where she was. She is also waiting on the MAT so she was catastrophising about that as well. We are going to be doing some work around keeping knocks from life in perspective!

Gina555 · 28/11/2024 10:15

My son thought he has got a high 7 or 8 as it went well. He achieved a really low score. He has have emailed to ask for a copy of his test.

Gina555 · 28/11/2024 10:21

He is such a good judge of how well exams go and was getting 8s and 9s on past papers.
He wants to see what he got wrong, he’s convinced he couldn’t have got such a low score. We’ll see if Pearson get back to us.

autumndays13 · 28/11/2024 10:26

@Cathpot I'm so sorry to hear your DD is so upset. The comms around it has been bad, with so many students now feeling either very unsure whether their score is good enough or feeling it definitely isn't good enough and all the effort was for nothing.

My DD was very flat for much of yesterday. Her score is 4.6. Is your DD's in that ballpark? If so, I really think it's all still to play for. We don't know what cut-off Warwick will use (for maths) and I now don't think we'll be told but I think it's possible it'll be below 5.

I don't like the TMUA! I think it's a crude instrument for testing something important.

@Gina555 keep us posted!

OP posts:
Gina555 · 28/11/2024 10:43

Thank you. His was lower than that-he is so shocked. He has withdrawn from any TMUA Universities. He is still waiting to hear from Oxford.

autumndays13 · 28/11/2024 11:07

@Gina555 your poor DC. Totally agree that he should request his papers. Sounds v odd. How unpleasant for him.

OP posts:
Gina555 · 28/11/2024 11:32

Good luck to your DD. Where else has she applied?

Upperroom · 28/11/2024 11:49

@Gina555 we are in exactly the same boat. I think o should get my dc to email and ask for the test too. Feels like a mistake?!

autumndays13 · 28/11/2024 12:05

@Upperroom I see no harm in asking for the test. I feel so sceptical about the whole thing. Also, in past years they've given scores for each paper. We seem to be getting so little information this year.
