We’re starting to think about University for my daughter who has just started her A Levels (History, Eng Lit & Sociology) and would welcome any recommendations for History or Law. Thanks

Would the grades quoted get into LSE?

I missed that.

When people say unis are good for law, there is a list of what unis supply most lawyers. It’s obviously Oxford and Cambridge at the top. Followed by Durham, Nottingham and Bristol. 81% RG. Essex isn’t even in the top 30 list. If dc want a law job, they do need to look at this type of research. That isn’t the same as graduate employment which also covers employment that might not be leading to any law practice qualification.

Birmingham AAB and Cardiff BBB for History. Both reasonably well regarded for History.

Cardiff is ABB.
BBB is their standard contextual offer.

I can confirm this too as dd2 was offered ABB for History.

History at York is very good.

York is well regarded for law and a unique problem based learning degree.
None RG but decency reputation for law and campus are Lancaster and Leicester usually ABB type range.
Many top rated for law require lnat too and usually A*AA eg Durham

Nottingham is a very good shout as they are known for being kind on results day if a grade is dropped. Also History and Law are both on the main (prettier) campus. It also seems to punch above its weight on post graduation prospects. My DD is reading history there and absolutely loves it.

Lancaster and Leicester both have good history departments and can be overlooked as they aren't RG.

I would go to York over Lancaster for law any day of the week. I don’t consider Lancaster to have any real reputation in law, it might do in Manchester perhaps. Warwick is excellent for law. Durham Bristol Exeter Nottingham. The latter 2 have campuses. Next - Manchester Birmingham and Leeds of which only Brum is a campus. all solid. Southampton, even, over Lancaster.

Lancaster is more in grades bracket op has mentioned (usually AAB/ABB went BBB in clearing this year)
I’m a NW based solicitor and it definitely has a good reputation and league table wise it’s 15th on Times, 22 on Complete uni guide.
York problem based learning is marmite - didn’t appeal to my dc at all and will be AAA.
Warwick will want stellar academics and offer very few places to home none contextual. See FOI.
