We’re starting to think about University for my daughter who has just started her A Levels (History, Eng Lit & Sociology) and would welcome any recommendations for History or Law. Thanks

What grades will she likely achieve? Does she have any preference as to where in the country? City? Campus?

Travelling3 · 24/09/2024 21:11

Hi, hopefully at least B’s but should be able to gets A’s, she’s a hard worker and wants to do well. Would prefer Campus. We live around Stratford upon avon so not too close to home
but she is also a home bird and not really into partying so not too far away from home! Sorry not easy!

Birmingham and Cardiff are both good campus unis.

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 24/09/2024 21:25

Lincoln has had a good history department in recent years. I've a few friends whose children have studied there and they've enjoyed it tremendously. One graduated last year and has stayed in Lincoln.

Birmingham and Cardiff are both good campus unis.

Birmingham AAB and Cardiff BBB for History. Both reasonably well regarded for History.

Piggywaspushed · 25/09/2024 14:26

My DS is at Birmingham doing history with similar A levels. Probably a bit close for you though?

Nottingham?

Piggywaspushed · 25/09/2024 14:26

Cardiff is not a campus though! Swansea is.

Piggywaspushed · 25/09/2024 17:34

Not remotely!

They must be working on an odd definition.

Trouble is, all unis call their main buildings 'the campus' but a campus uni is a place like York, Warwick, Nottingham, UEA, Keele.

Cardiff is spread out.

Piggywaspushed · 25/09/2024 17:35

Loads on that list aren't proper campus unis!

Mumofteenandtween · 25/09/2024 17:36

Is Warwick too close?

Randomsabreur · 25/09/2024 17:44

Depends what you mean by "Campus" as Glasgow has a definite campus area with almost all teaching in one place but there's almost no accommodation on the campus itself. Exeter is more traditionally 'campus' with a decent amount of accommodation on the main campus bit despite being in a city. Birmingham has/possibly had a teaching campus then an accommodation campus just up the road. Or you have the likes of Warwick, Keele, Royal Holloway, Stirling which are campuses out on their own...

Travelling3 · 25/09/2024 20:18

Thanks everyone lots to consider. Warwick and Birmingham are probably a bit too close to home but anything slightly further away is worth considering.

I definitely reckon Nottingham. Maybe Loughborough.

Xenia · 26/09/2024 19:57

One of my lawyer daughters went to Nottingham.

Lancaster is a nice campus university- not sure how they rank for history/law though

Piggywaspushed · 26/09/2024 20:44

Lancaster is excellent for history.

Spirallingdownwards · 26/09/2024 20:46

And Lancaster is also on the circuit that some of the top law firms visit for recruitment drives.

OnceAndFutureMum · 26/09/2024 20:48

@Travelling3 This is the rankings guide for History. I have learned from Mumsnet that some History courses require lower grades than others. Ancient History, History and a language, other variations. UEA comes out well on this list, typical offer AAB contextual BBB.

Thank you all so much. Nottingham and Lancaster are worth a visit. It’s difficult knowing which ones to visit but i think we’ll start there

@Travelling3 Have you looked at grades required for both History and Law? You will find law at the top unis is very competitive with grades to match.

The next issue is jobs. The better the uni, the better the chance of getting a law job. So be careful about reputation. Regional law is dominated by Manchester and Birmingham, London law by the high tariff unis. So explore what she wants to do with law. Although if she’s not wanting to be a lawyer, it’s less important.

I would also filter by grades wanted for History too. Some unis will be wanting high grades. So I would filter by grades first and then look at distance and campus etc. Do not waste time looking at 5 unis that want grades she might not get.

ILoveMyKids137 · 27/09/2024 10:59

My son went to LSE. I can recommend the LSE for Law but for modern history, only

TizerorFizz · 27/09/2024 22:30

Would the grades quoted get into LSE?

RareMaker · 27/09/2024 22:42

UEA?

OrangeBlossomBlue · 27/09/2024 22:47

Essex is good for law.
