A level results day 2024

How’s everyone else feeling about results day? I’ve got one at uni already and 2nd dd hoping to go to Kent in September. She seems ok about it at the moment although think that will change as it gets closer. Me I’m so keeping my fingers crossed she gets what she wants, I know there will always be other options but she loved the open day. Going to struggle with this one going though as it has been a real journey to get to where she is.

DD got results last year. Edexcel maths grade boundaries were released at 645am (saw via Twitter). At 8am UCAS crashed ie she couldn’t see her uni applications, but it sent an email bang on 8am so she found out via her inbox before any other source. Good luck to all waiting this year.

Anotherbigwin · 11/08/2024 20:24

Do you reckon UCAS or the university will notify students via email first? Is it always from 8am? Actual results can only be received from school?

sailingsunshine · 11/08/2024 20:52

@Anotherbigwin , all results are embargoed until 8am on the 15th. Schools/colleges distribute grades in different ways to students from 8am. UCAS will show the uni offer if it's been achieved from 8am but the system often crashes at that time.

In the past the embargo was more flexible but it's now strictly enforced.

jackstini · 12/08/2024 06:25

@Bunnyannesummers - not sure if you can advise on this one but dd is definitely going to turn down her uni place for course applied for and accept a degree apprenticeship with study at a different university

Should she wait until the 15th, or decline now?
Will her degree apprenticeship Uni/course appear on her UCAS?

Getting close now people, hope all your DC are coping

jackstini · 12/08/2024 06:32

@O2HaveALittleHouse one of my friends' DS recently had an email from his Uni to say the UCAS points required for Computer Science course there had gone down to 88

Not sure if that means they know the grade boundaries now or it was undersubscribed but he may find a course on clearing

FiveGoMadInDorset · 12/08/2024 06:33

Good luck all, first one off from me, DC can log on to college website from 8am for results. If they get what they want then it’s a mad rush to cash in Tesco ouches and book a ferry to Northern Ireland, have already booked random days annual leave to cover when we would likely go

O2HaveALittleHouse · 12/08/2024 07:31

@jackstini thats interesting, I’ll let her know.

Is that from Devon based purely on your user name? What a trip!
Assuming Queens it is worth it.

I don't think you can do anything in ucas this week until Thursday. I could be wrong though.
Degree apprenticeship sounds fab!!

Tortiemiaw · 12/08/2024 07:44

Also have the final one's results this week!! She's got her conditional place but is really worrying.

She came out of all the exams ok but we genuinely can't predict what she'll get. With ds, it was much easier for some reason. His subjects were 100% 'him' if that makes sense, but hers were a bit of a mish mash! Her insurance has asked for lower grades, and she'd be happy going there too, but it's so stressful!!

redskydarknight · 12/08/2024 09:45

Having successfully filled her days with other things and put results to the back of her mind, I think it hit DD yesterday. She's suddenly really really stressed. I have suggested lots of distraction activities :)

She also refuses to think about a Plan B until one is needed is it bad that I am surreptitiously checking out Clearing just in case?

Investinmyself · 12/08/2024 10:11

I went out with dd for a couple of hours yesterday, sitting in sun with a cocktail we had a decent conversation about it all.
Her firm and insurance are same grades, she thinks she’s definitely missed grade in 1 subject but are hoping there’s some wiggle room.
@FiveGoMadInDorset Queens Belfast is my dc’s insurance. I haven’t even looked at logistics of getting there with her stuff. I saw accommodation opens 8/9 which seems so close.

socks1107 · 12/08/2024 10:22

I think where I am stressing is that with my eldest dd we were so chilled and just assumed she'd be fine. And she was 8 points short and there was no wiggle room, it's worked out well as she did a years level 4 and is now at the same uni doing a two year accelerated degree but the stress was unreal.
My youngest as she's done btecs believes her grades are known and in the bag but I think one of them could go down but she's like nope my teacher said it can't. Roll on Thursday!

If she really definitely doesn’t want the place she can ask to have her UCAS entirely removed by contacting them (assuming her degree apprenticeship doesn’t need to go through UCAS - almost none of them do but worth double checking with her provider, or the info should be in her welcome/sign on pack)
However, probably easiest to just wait till thurs and then decline as it’s just a button that will appear to her then.
its not uncommon for students to have last minute wobbles as well, which is why a wait till Thursday can be good - avoids some of the what ifs!

Dorset, and it is, DC’s godfather and his family live near Ballymena, we go over a lot, loved the feel
of Belfast when we went in February, keeping everything crossed (also have family near Dublin so all bases covered)

O2HaveALittleHouse · 12/08/2024 10:59

I did mean to say Dorset not Devon - think I got carried away with the idea of Queens. Your DC will have a great time in Belfast. Is it true that the British students are houses together? I find that hilarious because many are actually 1st or 2nd gen NI or Republic of Ireland by ethnicity in the first place!

O2HaveALittleHouse · 12/08/2024 11:10

I used to have links to Queens/Belfast but it’s a while ago so my information is probably dated.

Tortiemiaw · 12/08/2024 11:19

Are the available clearing places somewhere already?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 12/08/2024 11:22

@O2HaveALittleHouse dont think so, DC was a bit late applying for so has got a room in halls right in the centre of the city, near city hall, sad if that is true

redskydarknight · 12/08/2024 12:05

Tortiemiaw · 12/08/2024 11:19

You can see them on the UCAS site, but, partly on the basis that there are a lot of "good" universities with places, I do think they will change drastically when A Level results come out. It's helped keep my personal stress levels down to see that a university that DD really liked but didn't list, is in Clearing though.

Investinmyself · 12/08/2024 12:36

For Queens they told us they try and put a few English together in flats but that was The Elms BT9 where we asked but not all English in one. The city centre flats have lots of international so I’d imagine it will be mixed.
I’m surprised more English don’t even go and look, they paid £100 to dc for going to open and offer day. The £3000 scholarship yr 1 also isn’t well known.
I do want dc to get her firm but part of me will be sad as personally I preferred Queens but it’s not my life.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 12/08/2024 13:53

@Investinmyself that was a big incentive to go, plus the modules in the course are good and someone around both in Northern Ireland and in the republic if needed. DC is autistic as well so that will play a part. They are in John Bell House, which looks amazing

Thanks. I found it and it seems my dd's university and subject is in clearing. Does this mean they have decided on the offers and have spaces still? ( sorry if I'm acting dense - I didn't know any of this when ds did his 6 years ago!)

Universities don't have quotas any more. On the basis of how many universities are in clearing, I'm going to assume that some of them are only interested in students who already have results and have grades above their standard offer - not that they will take just anyone (and this is probably more likely in subjects that don't have space limitations e.g. for lab work). I don't think (IIRC it's Tuesday?) universities have A Level results yet, so they won't know how many students holding offers will have achieved required grades.

If the reports on university applications being down are correct, I can imagine that universities might be quite keen to get extra suitably qualified students in where they can.

But, I am speculating ... I have no insider knowledge.
