A level results day 2024

How’s everyone else feeling about results day? I’ve got one at uni already and 2nd dd hoping to go to Kent in September. She seems ok about it at the moment although think that will change as it gets closer. Me I’m so keeping my fingers crossed she gets what she wants, I know there will always be other options but she loved the open day. Going to struggle with this one going though as it has been a real journey to get to where she is.

@2kidsand1dog Thanks. My son is desperate to get onto quite a niche course, so as long as they accept him we not worried about specific grades.

Is it correct that if you log onto ucas first thing on Thursday you can find out whether firm choice has accepted (therefore confirming results are either as predicted or higher?)

Yes you will find out if you’ve been accepted by firm or insurance. But in DD’s case her firm offer is quite a bit lower than her predicted grades so not much of an indicator as to her actual results.

Puppupandaway · 13/08/2024 20:23

I know I saw on ucas website that they are closing it to upload results on Wednesday evening until 8am Thursday. I'm guessing it'll have crashed by 8:01.

Pinkypinkyplonk · 13/08/2024 20:33

Two years ago my dd said at 8 am, “I’m in!”
She didn’t bother going into school until much later in the day. Turns out she was a grade down on her first choice, but they had accepted her anyway.

That's the case for my uni and courses. So we spent yesterday deciding who we will be rejecting due to poorer results than predicted and then how many spaces we have left. So our website currently shows we are in clearing and we were getting applications yesterday and more today.

We are interviewing tomorrow and may be out of clearing for some smaller courses before 8am Thursday morning. The plan is to try and fill the courses before Thursday.

Some of the bigger courses will definitely still be in clearing and too be honest won't be filled. However that doesn't mean we will take anyone, there is still a line in the sand for each course on minimum of ucas points accepted. It is not bums on seats.

Thank you!! Now I'm panicking she's been rejected for poor results 😢 oh god!!!

Hopefully not. But I do think some people get a false reassurance from seeing a course in clearing and assume that means the uni is desperate to fill that course and and all offer holders will be a shoo-in which is not the case. But the majority of offer holders will be fine. 🤞

SockFluffInTheBath · 13/08/2024 21:42

Stressed here, but trying to give off chilled vibes to DS who has now decided to change his course. Clearing here he comes 🤞🏻

listsandbudgets · 13/08/2024 21:58

Oh no DD's course is in clearing - another thing to worry about.. not going to tell her though I imagine she's noticed for herself.

Interestingly, the clearing offer is a lower offer than the one she had - don't know what to make of that.

Distracting myself by watching Red Dwarf on iplayer - light hearted funny easy watching just what I need. She on the other hand has gone out to a night club with a couple of friends

I'm sure I feel worse than I did when waiting for my results

socks1107 · 13/08/2024 22:22

My dds course is also in clearing. Trying not to worry about it. Thursday can't come quick enough now

Puppupandaway · 13/08/2024 22:34

Sorry if I'm being dim, but why is it a bad thing if a course is in clearing??

It’s not always a bad thing. Could be one of two situations.

so say there are 60 places on the course, applications have been low and they have only had 40 places accepted before results day. That course will be in clearing.

the alternative is they made 70 offers for the 60 places (expecting a handful to not get results) and had 70 firm accepts. Then on Monday the university found out 25 students have got 60odd ucas points rather than the necessary 122. The university will be rejecting those 25 students so they will know already that they’re in clearing.

Puppupandaway · 13/08/2024 22:45

I think for my son's course, it's the first scenario. His course has been in clearing list for a few months so not linked to results received this week. It's quite a niche course so I doubt it's full.

Good luck to everyone's DC, let's hope it's relatively painless on Thursday!

MirandaWest · 13/08/2024 23:09

DD is meeting up with friends tomorrow night to play board games which I’m glad about as it means I won’t say the wrong thing 😃 She also said there’s nothing alcohol involved as they don’t want to get results with a hangover.

Her offers are lower than her predicted grades. I think it’s more likely than not that she will have got her offer but she wants to get the predicted grades. Two years ago was a double whammy of DS getting A Levels and DD getting GCSEs and despite her results being amazing, she was still disappointed. Would really like her to be happy this time.

She’s planning to check UCAS before going in as she wants to know whether she’s got in before getting her grades,

Delphigirl · 13/08/2024 23:22

Hi everyone. DD applied for a deferred place and is having a gap year. She also has higher predictions than her ABB offer, AND her course is in clearing at BBC, so she is feeling pretty relaxed about it all.
quite a lot of her friends have said they want a gap but most applied for Sept 24 entry with the thought of deferring at the last minute. And now it is coming to crunch time, I suspect quite a few won’t have a gap in the end. DD has booked her flight to Peru in a month, but I haven’t heard that any of her friends have finalised plans yet.

Nicolamurraysquietbatpeople · 13/08/2024 23:25

DC is working a late shift tomorrow so will not be up at the crack of dawn as the tactic to keeping busy. The school IT dept cocked up today and put the CIE board results up (they are out today) for about an hour until someone noticed. Sadly DC had not done any CIE board exams…

Gin at the ready for Thursday morning. I think waiting for your child’s results is way worse than waiting for your own back in the day!

DD is under the impression that the uni might send an automated email to you directly from 4am onwards if you've got a place with them.

She read it online somewhere from previous students. I don't know if that's specific to her first choice uni or if it's a wider thing.

socks1107 · 14/08/2024 08:00

My DD is out with her boyfriend today and tonight I have to pick up my eldest late from the airport so full day at work, dd busy then a late night. Tmrw will then be here!

I'd completely parked in my brain what happened to my eldest two years ago and feel more anxious this morning. UCAS had her with a question mark when we looked. Then when we got to school at 10am she was 8 points short and clearing were talking to the uni on her behalf, or something like that. In the end it took them till Tuesday evening to make a decision and kept her in limbo it was awful.
None of us were sleeping and I was full
of mouth ulcers from the stress. When we did get a decision she couldn't celebrate or be happy as everyone had done all that over the weekend! I'd forgotten all this thank goodness!!
She actually got rejected, but went to the same uni and did a btec level 4 in the subject then onto a two year accelerated degree so she's done absolutely fine but not without its stress!
Hoping tmrw is just a green tick I'm not sure I can go through all that again

jackstini · 14/08/2024 08:13

I might be being really thick here, but does UCAS site or your A Level results paper show you how many UCAS points you have got in total?

DD has taken a combination of A Levels, Certificates/Diplomas, EPQ and an AS Level from last year and wants to know if anywhere will just give her the total amount rather than her work it all out!

She's having dinner with friends tonight and they are all staying over at one house so she won't even be at home tomorrow morning. Sure I am feeling more nervous than her...

Investinmyself · 14/08/2024 08:23

The embargo is until 8am tomorrow so the unis shouldn’t send the welcome emails until then.
We went to cinema last night and I’m out with a friend tonight to stay busy.
It’s honestly worse than I remember for mine 30 yrs ago.
My dc’s plan is ucas first then School email. The school email at 8am. Then hopefully all ok and out for breakfast.
It seems like lots of decent courses from well regarded universities will be in clearing so plenty of options if results aren’t as hoped.
Just seems such a ridiculous system. This time last year with dc’s friends there was lots of angst if predicted grades weren’t high enough, trying to juggle uni visits, prep for additional tests. The whole it wasn’t even worth applying for some courses unless you were AAA or higher predicted. Now a year later it’s looking like a mix of A’s and B’s or less will get you on these same courses.

Investinmyself · 14/08/2024 08:25

@jackstini no I don’t think points show. There’s lots of tables online I’d have those to hand.

TenSheds · 14/08/2024 08:56

Hmm, DD's results sheet from last year showed the points from each paper or subject (WJEC). There were several columns of numbers and acronyms, and I think we had to go online to find out what each one meant.

There’s an embargo until 8am so no communication. I think some years previously some occasionally slip though due to IT glitch but it’s supposed to be strictly adhered to.

O2HaveALittleHouse · 14/08/2024 09:13

My relative got a mail about accommodation from their insurance offer the night before results day, saying “congrats on coming to X. Here’s what to do about picking accommodation”. Cue a challenging night as they realised they probably hadnt got their 1st choice but weren’t sure.
Perhaps a computer glitch, perhaps on purpose. Unfair though all the same.

Where can you see what courses are in clearing?

Best to look on individual uni websites as UCAS and others don't update quite as promptly.

Just been looking at Southampton which has loads of courses in clearing including Law and Engineering. I'm not sure what that means - just fewer applications, or fewer people making their offers. Actually they have reduced the entry requirements so maybe not the latter unless people have missed by a long way 😬
