Gap year working overseas (Japan & South Korea)

Gapyear1 · 28/07/2024 07:07

DD wants to do a gap year, working part of it overseas. Now that we are not part of the European union no sure what the chances are?

A friend was telling me that Germany has a program with with Japan and South Korea teaching English. Is there anything similar in the UK? These are the countries DD wants to go but I am sure she will consider other options too.

dd went with EPIK but needed a degree to do the qualification.

There are programmes but they are extremely competitive - What ESOL qualification does she have? How long has she been learning Japanese?

Thank you.

Nothing, just an idea at the moment. Just finished year 12

An university degree?

There’s the JET programme in Japan but they are looking for graduates. Nothing really available for anyone straight out of high school

combinationpadlock · 28/07/2024 07:18

Suggest to her she makes a start learning Japanese on duolingo. Cheap and easy! But I suspect it will be very unlikely she will get work in Japan. Maybe she can visit it though?

She should have a careful look around at what is available for work during a gap year, and then apply now and start learning the language

Ahh ok. Thank you

What about other countries in Europe or South America?

She speaks Spanish.

So the only chance is she working in the UK to save money and then go travelling for a few weeks/months?

yes
but she could look into TEFL/TESOL or CELTA certificate

I don't know the details but I know of someone who was in the middle of an arts degree and got a placement to go to South Korea. It was exceptionally competitive to get a place but she got it. She's currently there and loved it though found it really hard at first.

So there opportunities out there but they may take some work to track down.

Have a look at the Mighty Roar - they organise gap year trips that can include teaching etc and open to non graduates. A friend of mine’s son did one last summer and loved it, she really rated them.
JET in Japan is great but only for graduates. You don’t have to speak any Japanese to go.

NoahVale · 28/07/2024 09:19

has she considered Thailand?

NoahVale · 28/07/2024 09:20

or au pair in spain?

Australia and New Zealand have working holiday visas open to young people.

My daughter did an on line celta course and is now teaching English in south korea. She loves it

Try TeachNomad.

Ds did a year teaching in Phnom Penh & dd is off to Costa Rica next month. Both straight out of IB, aged 18.

They do a month's training (you pay $1.5-2 for that, including accommodation), then they find them paid work.

Ds didn't save anything much on his salary, but he had a blast & it funded a month's travel all over Asia at the end of the contract.

CorvusPurpureus · 28/07/2024 14:52

Sorry - $1.5-2k!

My daughter is currently in South Korea teaching English but required a degree first. She did the English teaching qualification when she arrived and is now half way through a year’s teaching.

Yes as others have said you need a degree to teach English in SK.

Two ideas- look at Bunac, they do ski resort jobs in Japan. https://bunac.org/work-japan-ultimate-ski/work-japan-ultimate-ski-inclusions

And look at the work away site

If she has a passion then what about a Churchill fellowship. She would have to have a really good idea of what she wants to do.
