How much per month do you give your young person?

I think the loan should cover the accommodation so I'm wondering how much to give them per month to live on? They don't spend much, don't drink (currently!)

There are some very fortunate students from parents on this page. After we cover the rent (which loan doesn’t cover) I give my son £220 p.m. to cover food and basics. We cover also train fares home and clothing and phone. Anything else he has to work for. He knew he had to work the summer before he went to uni, so went away with some savings. If he wants extras I expect him to work to fund them. He had a job for the first term, but the hours didn’t suit him, so he have it up (I felt he could have negotiated better rather than just quit). He had some savings to fall back on and I have also been sending him a £100 p.m Tesco voucher as he was struggling. He has just secured a new job working at the student union which will hopefully see him through the next two years term time. He is also currently applying and interviewing for a summer job back home, fingers crossed he gets something secured. You mentioned about your YP being autistic and making work harder, I do understand that, my son is adhd and my stepson also autistic. But they know they have to work for extras and have done so through uni. Beside the financial requirement, they learn so much through their part time jobs which will equip them better for full time work post uni.

I've trained DD over the years on frugal living, cheap cooking and how to make bits of cash here and there.

We're very confident that she'll be just fine with her student loan paying her accommodation and £200 pm term time only living in halls in year 1.

I know that will need to go up in years 2 & 3 when she moves off campus, although the uni told us on the open day that their halls are no longer being filled by first years, so they're becoming increasingly available to second and third years who want them.

DS loan goes on his accommodation and we have to pay £2k a year towards it too. Then we give him £100 per week for food/going out and travel. This past year he has come home most weekends. If he is only at uni 3 days a week, we give him about £60 instead. This was plenty for him to live on. We covered bills (phone) and any extras.

We paid the accommodation for our two and they had their loans to live on.
Had to learn how to budget to make it last each term.
No monthly hand outs from us.
They both worked in the holidays to supplement their social and personal spending.

DS gets minimum maintenance loan but doesn’t have a job during term time as we want him to focus on his course (and having fun too ofc). We give balance of his accommodation (which means topping up his loan by £4000), clothes, mobile, car and four Hello Fresh meals a week, plus we give him £600 a month to live on (term time only).
