Has anyone heard back from LSE yet?

DD has applied to study International Relations and has heard nothing so far. Has anyone else had any response yet, offer or rejection?

Home students are at a disadvantage when applying to LSE ( particularly for economics).
International students are often preferred.
I know students who had been offered places at Oxbridge , Bristol, Warwick etc, but were rejected by LSE.

GreekGod · 24/03/2024 11:16

Yes, DD also still awaiting for a response from LSE. Lots of her friends been rejected already. I'm finding the whole thing quite stressful to be honest as they've got A level revision and I hate to see it affecting her. She's already got an unconditional from UCL and offers from Durham and Bristol. I wish there was a way we got all offers on the same day.

Are they allowed to do this?

mondaytosunday · 24/03/2024 12:35

@Ilikefood1234 probably no - they must have a quota for international and one for home students, so I don't think an international candidate will take a place of a home one.
We are still waiting. A trickle of offers for the subject have been reported on TSR. Also still waiting on Bath, and her grades are four above requirements and applied in October so not sure of the delay there (some offers for the course have gone out).
It is annoying when LSE open day notices keep popping up on FB saying 'must book as spaces are limited'. Yea, well, make all your offers first, please.

Cremebrulee45 · 24/03/2024 13:01

@mondaytosunday i know the open day in April is around the same time as the offer holder day . If there are any spaces left for the open day I would suggest booking now as last year it was fully booked very quickly, in case the offer holder day is also full by the time you hear? The subject talk at the open day for my DD’s subject was very good.

mondaytosunday · 24/03/2024 13:11

Good idea @Cremebrulee45!

SendmetoWales · 24/03/2024 13:21

@mondaytosunday What subject are you waiting for?

mondaytosunday · 24/03/2024 13:26

Sociology

Exasperatednow · 24/03/2024 18:46

DS got rejected. He's a bit disappointed especially as his dsis goes there and he's predicted higher A levels than she got. He's got all his other offers except St Andrew's.

SendmetoWales · 24/03/2024 19:46

So sorry to hear that @Exasperatednow. It really is like a lucky draw isn't it? I don't think anyone knows what they really look for.

mondaytosunday · 24/03/2024 21:28

I said it on the redirected thread - kids want to know exactly why one applicant is offered and they aren't, and I don't think the universities could say either. Amazing candidates don't get offers, others do. Maybe on a different day, it would be the other way around. Fact remains there are more wonderful candidates than places.

JocelynBurnell · 25/03/2024 06:29

LSE need a lot of time to sift through applications as they are only in a position to make offers to 12% of home applicants. LSE will make 150 offers to home applicants for Economics.

Bath can respond almost immediately to applications as they can make offers to all applicants who reach their predicted grades. Bath can make over 850 offers to home applicants for Economics as these offers are less likely to be firmed. Bath is a popular insurance choice.

lastdayatschool · 25/03/2024 08:47

Nothing we don't already know, but headline article in today's Times reporting that LSE, Imperial and UCL now get 76-79% of income from overseas fees.

mondaytosunday · 25/03/2024 08:49

@JocelynBurnell Bath have had DD's application since October (not economics). Grades in hand and still nothing!

SendmetoWales · 25/03/2024 10:36

@JocelynBurnell And at £34,400 a year for an international economics student that is a lot of money!

University costs have risen every year since 2012, but the fees paid by home students have remained exactly the same.

The only way universities can square the circle to not go bankrupt is to accept increasing numbers of overseas students every year. This will continue for the foreseeable future as it is the only way universities can survive.

LSE really needs to get its house in order. I know students who have been accepted to LSE for Economics who really shouldn't have been, and have had to switch course because they couldn't manage, when other excellent applicants didn't receive an offer. LSE places far too much weight on the Personal Statement which is terribly easy to fake.

user15913 · 26/03/2024 10:59

@Ceramiq totally agree that LSE need to up its game - if it cares that is?!?!

My DS has economics offers from both Oxford and Imperial (EFDS) but was rejected from LSE (w/achieved grades). Oxford and Imperial do interviews and tests to help inform their decision...necessary when you have so many candidates with amazing grades, and personal statements. I know the PS is being replaced with questions next year but I'm sure that tutoring agencies, proactive schools (state, private and international), and parents will still be having an influence and therefore it really shouldn't be relied on so much.

Needmoresleep · 26/03/2024 11:35

From the pool of London applicants we knew, we observed that the ones that got places at Cambridge seemed more outgoing and confident, seemingly destined for high flying jobs in the City. DS' peers at LSE were also very bright, but perhaps quieter, with many of his friends staying in academia. Some applicants will do well at interview others not. I can't see it as a problem that different places use different selection approaches and, as a result may reject someone that others have accepted or vice versa. You only need one offer, so it is of general benefit that they are shared around.

I think Universities know what they are doing. If they felt they were losing too many good applicants they would change things. Not interviewing must save the LSE a lot of money, money that can be spent elsewhere.

Wow - Oxford and Imperial are fantastic! Which is he going to Firm? Is Oxford for E&M?

user15913 · 26/03/2024 13:28

@Ceramiq thank you! Probably Oxford (yep e&m) but efds course looks great and will head to offer day before deciding. I think applying with grades in hand helps.

Both courses and universities are fantastic! Well done your son on having such an incredible choice. Yes, I also think that applying with grades in hand can be helpful - it's so much less of a shot in the dark for both applicants and university admissions. My DC, who applied grades in hand, didn't bother with any safety choices - just went for 5 courses that they really wanted.

Thanks.
He's got offers from Warwick, Bath and KCL. He'll be fine. He's deferring for a year (August baby) so thinking od reapplying with grades. He's predicted high A* in all three.
Not overly worried about him. 😁

Penguinsa · 27/03/2024 00:26

Congratulations user15913 great offers. There's a big group of E&M offer holders on WhatsApp (about a third of them) I think and currently none of them have LSE offers. Still waiting for LSE here though will firm Oxford and likely insure Bath.

how difficult is it to switch at LSE after the first year? my DS in this predicament, finding econ too hard and not enjoying it at all. Very stressed.
