Anyone received an offer from LSE yet?

I believe they make offers after UCAS closes, wondering how quickly? Anyone else waiting?

I think that A* is not the differentiator that universities hoped it would be.

They will know that they are missing out on good students, whilst at the same time the heavy maths content is causing some of their students to struggle. If TMUA enables them to get a better idea of potential than they gain from past results, it will be a good thing.

At LSE the range of qualifications from applicants is wide and, like A-levels, other countries' national qualifications vary over time. Distinguishing between applicants and attaching value to predicted grades from schools that are unused to the concept is inevitably a very imprecise game.

I’m nervously waiting on lse Econ for my ds… he applied in Oct. Unfortunately the tmua was a disaster back in Oct (test centre was problematic to say the least and his tiny whiteboard was not how he is use to working). So his score is below 3. What I don’t understand is why they haven’t just rejected him already?! I’m worried he’s getting a ‘false hope’… awful wait!! He only has one other offer too despite all 9s & 4 a stars predicted.

Economics is fantastically competitive. One offer is already great. Where is it from?

Thank you - he’s not very excited about it… St Andrews - which is obviously a great uni but he says it’s not as recognised internationally as say lse, ucl. I think also he doesn’t want to be so far from home (we’re south England)

Did he get an interview for Cambridge? That might be an indicator for LSE

St Andrews is a fantastic university but I agree that, for Economics, there are strong arguments for being in London near employers.

Sadly rejected pre interview due to the tmua results despite averaging 7s in past papers. Why would this be an indicator for LSE? The one thing he does have is a fantastic PS (think named on research papers etc) but when we got the results we just assumed they’d be an automatic rejection. Lse say they do put weight on the ps. I wish they’d just reject him already. He needs to concentrate on the a levels!

Is your dc also applying for Econ? What are their offers?

Two of our older DC did Econ but that was a while back.

I'm sorry your DS was pre interview rejected from Cambridge due to TMUA. The reason I asked was because it might indicate if LSE will also pre screen reject due to the TMUA score. I wish your DS all the best.

Upperroom · 06/03/2025 11:55

Thank you - it’s impossible to know I think especially as the tmua is mandatory for the first time this year. There’s no info about cut off etc just that they still put weight on the PS.

Schlappe · 06/03/2025 11:59

My DC did economics at LSE before there was the TMUA requirement at all. Back then it was the PS that determined it all.

What are they up to now? Did they enjoy it?

Works in renewables now. And yes my DC loved being at LSE (after an initial worry about the "social life")

Ceramiq · 06/03/2025 14:14

I know students currently in 3rd year BSc Economics at LSE and tbh it's very hard and there have been drop outs/course changers/disappointed students likely to graduate with low 2:2s unable to get on a Masters. I think the TMUA is about screening more efficiently for the strong quantitative skills required on the course and that it is best to trust LSE on this.

I get your point but like I said earlier the test Center these tests are taking place are very problematic. My ds who is ASC really struggled with the noise levels and tiny white board. Oxford have their admissions tests take place in the dcs sixth forms - controlled, familiar and all round nicer environment. Like I said my ds was getting much higher results on past papers.

The lse economics curriculum has changed in recent years.

NeedingCoffee · 06/03/2025 16:22

Oxford's MAT and other tests also took place at Pearson centres this year. There's no doubt that there were lots of students who didn't feel they'd achieved their potential due to the set up.

Unfortunately the Pearson VUE test centres are necessary to ensure secure environments. There are huge issues internationally around cheating in standardised testing, hence secure testing. TMUA and ESAT are sat all around the world. And DC will come across similar centres when they become undergraduates in London and have to sit exams.

They should be allowed to take paper in with them.
I've heard not all test centres were the same. Some had paper, some had pens with no ink etc

Upperroom · 06/03/2025 18:18

My dcs Pearson Vue centre was just not neuro diverse friendly in any shape or form. I feel my ds has been hugely disadvantaged. We need neuro diversity in all industries. They’re usually the only people doing the right thing!

I know. What I meant to say was that the university massively revamped the economics curriculum and the teaching methods.
