Is anyone starting the journey of drama school auditions and starting to feel the stress? Maybe sending them to drama group was a big mistake lol.

My dd starting at Arts Ed in September. Accommodation sorted sharing a flat with 2 girls. I’m starting to have sleepless nights worrying about her being in London, getting lost and being safe. Anyone else feel like this? 🙄

It’s an alien feeling to drop them off in a city away from home, I remember with my DD I was bereft and anxious for weeks and weeks! But it gets easier and she’s just nearing the end of 8 months in Far East and Australia. At least drama school will keep them busy, occupied and exhausted!

Newgirls · 08/08/2024 14:46

I feel ok about London as it’s always busy so if they go out they will have people around them. Easy cheap transport too so that helps get them home ok

It’s in a great part of London - I’m sure she will be fine.

it’s been all change for my YP (again). They got another waitlist offer - this time for the 3 year Actor / Muso at Mountview. Lots of discussions and deliberations over whether to take the MT foundation at EDA or the 3 year at Mountview. In the end they chose Mountview so had to start from scratch again with sorting accommodation. They are so very excited. Good luck to everyone preparing to send their DC off in September.

Thank you. All the very best to your DC as they start at Mountview. Keep us updated

Good luck to everyone starting on their courses over the next few weeks- I hope it’s everything they’ve dreamed of. My ds has a couple of weeks till he starts his MT degree and dd a week till her MT sixth form. Bit different doing all the back to school shopping in dance shops!

Thanks to everyone for all the lovely support on this thread. It’s not an easy journey for them or us so it’s so good to share it with others going through the same stress!

Good luck to everyone auditioning for 25 I’ll be keeping an eye on any threads ready to do it all again for 26!

It’s exciting! Been buying dance shoes and kitchen kit today.

Can anyone with boys who've attended drama school offer any insight about what they wear for 'movement' classes?
DS has been told that it's 'tight blacks' but he's doing an acting course, not MT/dance, and is wondering if there's an option which isn't full-on leotard and tights?
The school have just directed them to links which sell all sorts of dance/drama clothing.

Comefromaway · 06/09/2024 11:55

Joggers and a fitted t shirt type clothing. (the tighter joggers are in style at the moment)

Biscuitsneeded · 06/09/2024 13:21

Mine wears black shorts in warmer weather and black joggers in Winter. For an Acting degree.

Yes, good luck all! We're out the other end. Daughter graduated this year; has booked a couple of jobs and has recalls coming up.
Still taking it a day at a time, like we did when she was auditioning for drama schools and when she was training.
Keep on keeping on...

Good to hear she's working! Does she have a muggle job too?

UsualChaos · 06/09/2024 19:51

@Biscuitsneeded She's applied for a few but hasn't been able to find one yet that allows her time off to attend auditions. She's fortunate that she's getting a lot of auditios (mainly self tapes) so a lot of her time goes on taping and then some 'in the room' recalls. She's been working all summer and still hasn't finished the production, but will need to find something soon, if the latest recalls don't come to anything.

I imagine that's the challenge. Finding a job that helps pay the rent if you are without acting work, but that doesn't stop you attending auditions. I really want my DS who is going into second year to think about this before he reaches this stage! He's done bar work and FOH work during 6th form and in holidays, and I guess working evenings is a good strategy, but I feel like a specific skill that you can pick up and put down again, would be a huge advantage. I know an actor who takes headshots for other actors - not a bad idea at all because you can pick and choose your hours - but they can't all do that!

UsualChaos · 06/09/2024 21:16

@Biscuitsneeded she did some events and front of house stuff during college holidays so might try and get into an agency that does conferences and events. She's tried nannying and coffee shops but has struggled with getting the time off and because of no barista training.

Biscuitsneeded · 06/09/2024 22:09

@UsualChaos She's clearly doing very well for someone who only graduated last year, if she worked all summer and is getting auditions and recalls. It's not an easy life they're all signing up for but it's good to hear it does work out for some of them.

She's not in every day but she's doing two projects (one film, one voice over) that hasn't really left enough time to do another job. The voice job is a continuation of a long standing relationship with an animation company from pre-drama school days, but the film is a new booking since graduation, through her new agent.

Newgirls · 07/09/2024 09:02

That’s great to hear usualchaos

LoudSnoringDog · 07/09/2024 20:41

DS graduated from Bird College today. He received a 2.1 in professional dance and musical theatre. It was such a lovely day.

Truetoself · 07/09/2024 22:22

Congratulations @LoudSnoringDog

Mcmumager · 12/09/2024 21:42

Lipa posted on Instagram today a place has become available for their ba in MT. Applications via video.

Good afternoon, would anyone be able to advise where i can source monologue scripts for my DD upcoming auditions next month. I've searched google but not coming up with much. Thanks in advance

Comefromaway · 19/11/2024 15:06

If it's for drama school you usually need to have read the whole play so amazon for cheap copies of scripts or a library. National Theatre Connections have a good selection of plays/monologues for young people.

Newgirls · 19/11/2024 15:06

You can get compilation books of scripts suitable for this age in Waterstones, Amazon etc

I guess you need a contemporary and Shakespeare? Shakespeare loads online.

if she’s doing a level I’m sure school can provide some too

Newgirls · 19/11/2024 15:07

And agree - they get asked questions about the context so read the whole play too
