Universities with good industrial links engineering

DC has started looking at universities for engineering; currently in year 12.

We are wondering what are the universities with good industrial links and employability? Also nice, happy, safe atmosphere?

The only one I know of is Kingston Uni. Very strong links and also excellent links for apprenticeships / degree apprenticeships. My DC is thinking of Kingston and is currently doing a level 3 engineering course.

Thank you. Will check it out

DS did his engineering degree and masters at Warwick. He enjoyed the campus and access to local towns. He lived in Leamington Spa for two of those years. Lots of connections to local businesses

Sheffield has good links with industry I think, and people generally seem happy with it. The only thing I don't like about it is it isn't a campus and has a great big dual carriageway running through it.

handmademitlove · 22/10/2023 12:44

Surrey. The key question is whether students have to organise their own placement or whether the department has established links that they use every year that students can apply for?

BaronessBomburst · 22/10/2023 12:45

If he's looking abroad, Delft and Eindhoven. Courses will all be in English.

Mountain9 · 22/10/2023 13:17

yes, abroad may be an option; but will you get a student loan for overseas?

No student loan for overseas courses, but for UK based courses that have an industrial or study year abroad you do.

PestoQueen · 22/10/2023 13:20

I was also going to say Surrey, most courses there have a year in industry in the 3rd year, have done since I went in he 1990's - my friends all did engineering of various types and all secured great placements with big companies like Panasonic and others and literally walked into a job straight from graduation, it's a fantastic place to study too.

Strathclyde

LadyGeorginaSmythe · 22/10/2023 13:29

Another vote for Surrey. I did an engineering degree there many years ago now, and most students did the 3rd year in industry, the uni has amazing links.
Lovely small campus, 10/15 mins walk into Guildford. Feels very safe and friendly.
I went back to visit campus recently and i still love it.

What about Bath, Bristol, Liverpool, Loughborough?

OP posts:
NotMeNoNo · 22/10/2023 13:41

We've had some great students from Loughborough on their year in industry.
Most universities have industry links via research funding anyway.

Also, just doing an engineering degree is employable already!

Absolutechaos · 22/10/2023 13:45

Bath has excellent industry links and I think were the first to offer a year in industry option. They also accelerate content in years 1 and 2 so they can put more business content into the course later on. However, it's super competitive as a result. They also offer a lower entry requirement for a high EPQ score.

Chewbecca · 22/10/2023 13:46

Loughborough ticks all your boxes.

Saschka · 22/10/2023 13:49

Bath is great! DBro went to Imperial and wished he’d gone to Bath (Imperial was also great, but was more research/academia rather than industry. This was in 2010, so may have changed, obviously).

Ok; this is not an
option then. Thanks

Another vote for Bath! Excellent university with great industry links.

everythingthelighttouches · 22/10/2023 13:54

Loughborough

fii oh r a range of engineering, good links to industry, program of year in industry and also industry sponsorship for degrees (very competitive though)

Its not a big city but it’s a good campus university

Mountain9 · 22/10/2023 14:33

Sounds like Loughborough and Bath are the top contenders; maybe Surrey, Sheffield?

Do you go with your children to all open days? How much do you support them with application process?

Got 3 recommendations for Bath, 3 for Loughborough and 3 for Surrey. Will definitely ask DC to look at those

Warwick - DN did engineering with a placement year. I remember they had great links into Rolls Royce, BAE Systems, Mars.

RampantIvy · 22/10/2023 16:06

Sheffield owns the AMRC. I would put sheffield as a definite not a maybe.

Thank you; will ask DC to put Sheffield and Warwick on the list too.

What is AMRC?

Got my answer:advance manufacturing research centre
