Universities with good industrial links engineering

DC has started looking at universities for engineering; currently in year 12.

We are wondering what are the universities with good industrial links and employability? Also nice, happy, safe atmosphere?

our youngest is at Strathclyde in Glasgow for Civil engineering. Great course in an amazing city.

they are in 3 rd year and are offered mentors from engineering firms to work with in small groups,

I know of someone else who had narrowed engineering down to Loughborough and also Strathclyde before deciding on Strathclyde.

Will definitely ask him to look at it

@Mountain9 with those grades has he considered imperial?

If it's electronics he's interested in, as the OP indicated above, imperial is one of the small number where FM is their preferred 3rd subject alongside maths and physics. 'Preferred', not essential. However if there's a course which 'prefers' FM that's for a reason - students who haven't done it may find some of the degree content that much tougher.

Is there a particular part of engineering your DS is interested in?
Sheffield definitely has good links on the aerospace side with Rolls Royce.
My DC chose Leeds for mechanical engineering (which then offers specialisms I think after first 2 years). Great facilities. Didn’t get the impression they have strong industry links (although does have good careers office) but got on a good graduate scheme as did their friends.

She said upthread, electronics and/or product design.

NoraBattysCurlers · 22/10/2023 22:44

Southampton, Manchester, Sheffield, Loughborough and Strathclyde are great option.

Imperial is excellent as are MIT, ETH, Delft and Leuven, but your DC would need Further Maths and Chemistry.

Salford University

Thank you everyone for your input. Just s few more questions:

I noticed Bristol and Leeds mentioned in another thread. Are they any good? Or is it more for mechanical engineering?

How important is they are not too far from home? We are in the South close to London so Bath really ticks all the boxes.

Strathclyde seems very good and the year abroad appeals too, but maybe a bit far?

I read issues with accommodation in some of the places so I guess that’s something else to consider?

The distance thing depends on your DC and how comfortable they’d be with this, plus your funds and availability to help. Our DC is at Uni in Glasgow and we are in SE. If they want to come home, they can do this door to door quite quickly if they fly - which without luggage is cheaper than the train, about £22 one way. Certainly faster than getting train from other supposedly closer English unis who have dreadful train lines. Sure, it’s a right old hike taking the car once a year when they move but still doable.

Glasgow no longer seems to have an issue with first years accommodation - the TAGs years were an issue but this now seems to have abated. Y2 & beyond accommodation does go quickly, and there is the HMO issue which means lots of private rentals are for 2 people only, but there are lots of private halls so as long as you can sort yourself in Nov of previous year it’s fine - same as many other places.

Glasgow is a fabulous place to be a student, it always comes near the top of any league tables for student life.

Thank you. Have not thought of flying. Definitely worth putting on the list.

DC was looking at DTU in Denmark but the course was not in English so Strathclyde may provide that option of going abroad for a year which really appeals DC.

FM is preferred at imperial, but pretty sure nowhere is going to require chemistry for the types of engineering this DC is interested in. Confused

Afaik Bristol has a good reputation, but the electrical&electronics dept made a complete mess of their open day when DD was applying a few years ago which it her off.

She also wasn't at all taken with Leeds, and anecdotally from people I've known who went there it may not score highly on the 'nice, happy, safe atmosphere' criterion.

TizerorFizz · 24/10/2023 22:27

@ErrolTheDragon Everyone I know who went to Leeds loved it! Maybe more street wise Dc?

Sheffield and Bristol are very strong in Engineering. When looking at degrees the MEng is the most desirable @Mountain9 This is because the route to chartered status is quicker. BEng leads to Incorporated status. Therefore although a year in industry looks good, it isn’t always the smartest thing to do if it compromises the MEng degree. MEng degree holders do get jobs!

handmademitlove · 24/10/2023 22:30

@TizerorFizz I did an integrated masters with industrial year 30 years ago! It is possible and was a great option.

Neolara · 24/10/2023 22:31

Dd's at Bath and having a brilliant time. Lovely place to go to uni.

timetorefresh · 24/10/2023 22:39

DH went Loughborough and now owns his own engineering company

TizerorFizz · 24/10/2023 23:20

@handmademitlove Where would you recommend now? Fewer around I think.

TizerorFizz · 24/10/2023 23:24

I see Sheffield do. Interesting that it’s 4tb year. I’d certainly look at something like that. However even if there’s no year in industry, there’s hardly a shortage of suitable jobs.

MrsAvocet · 24/10/2023 23:30

Another vote for Strathclyde. My DH is an engineer and his company regularly takes their undergraduates on placement and a number of his colleagues are Strathclyde graduates. He usually really rates the students they get from there, above some they've had from Universities that would generally be considered more prestigious. They have a number of product design courses that might be of interest to your DC and the department has a very good reputation.
My DS is applying for Universities for 2024 and is currently favouring an integrated MEng course there. In fact since he went to the open day I am having some problem getting him to consider other options as he is so certain that it's the place he wants to be.

jellycat · 24/10/2023 23:43

My ds has just started an electronic engineering degree course at Nottingham. They can do a year in industry (probably like most of them tbh) but also they can apply for sponsorships with a number of companies. The scheme is open to students applying for certain courses at Nottingham, Bristol and Newcastle. He was awarded a sponsorship and will spend every summer working for his sponsor getting hands on experience.

We went to open days at Loughborough (DH did EEE there), Bristol, Surrey, Southampton and Portsmouth as well as Nottingham.

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 24/10/2023 23:54

DS currently in his first year at Bath, came highly recommended by his 6th form. We are 200 miles away so there are definitely some more local to us!

handmademitlove · 25/10/2023 08:21

Surrey still offer the Meng with professional placement course, which is where I went. They have good links with the telecoms industry - several of my friends went into this area.

Puffalicious · 25/10/2023 08:28

Reiterating Strathclyde. DS1's best friends are both there- Civil & Environmental & Electronic & Electrical. Loving their courses.

My friend's daughter has just started Product Design too.

DS2 is applying to Mechanical this year. Open day was really impressive. Be warned, their entry requirements are high & it's super competitive.
