DD was pooled - the first she knew of it was opening the offer letter from a different college. We visited it in February half term, completely on spec and she loved it, accepted it, got the grades and had 4 great years there (Covid aside but even then this college was great about allowing her back). At her graduation, the Head of Admissions for NatSci in her college sought us out to tell us what a good choice he made in picking her from the pool.
The bike issue: I've written this before but we bought DD's from our local recycling centre for £8. DH put new brakes on it and in 2020 put new mudguards on. The lock was recommended by someone & came from Sports Direct. It's a hideous shade of pink which combined with the rust is an interesting combo. Her college put an official metal sticker thing on it. It lived in the college bike shed for 4 years until she moved to a house. If you can get a bike beforehand, it's probably a good idea. DD has a really nice bike at home - when she finally leaves C she will probably sell the pink/rusty one.
DD joined the Lido for swimming this summer and quite enjoyed it. She has been known to swim in the Cam in December (bloody idiot) but since the recent sewage issues has refrained. She and DH go to our local Christmas Day sea swim so it's not surprising.
@Girtonian makes some good points but don't worry about what to wear for an interview. They want students to be comfortable - DD wore jeans and a hoodie. DD was well aware of the sister colleges at O because one of her closest schoolfriends had an offer from there and they thought it would be great to go to sister colleges. Friend missed her offer, although has done amazingly and ended up doing a masters at C, so she and DD see each other regularly.
One of DD's orchestra friends from home went to Girton, mainly because he is autistic and he and his parents thought it would be better for him living a bit further from the hustle and bustle. It worked well for him.
Sorry, I can't see who it was, but I had a student go to Fitzwilliam for NatSci the year before DD went. He absolutely loved it. I last saw him as DH and I were trudging through Eddington to catch the bus to DD's college for our only formal dinner to date in Feb 2020. A cyclist skidded to a halt and shouted "hello Mrs Malbecfan, how nice to see you. Are you visiting DD?" It was great to catch up.
