Does anyone from down south go to St Andrews university? I didn't realise it was 50 miles away from Edinburgh?

Why do they call it At Andrews university Edinburgh when it's nowhere near Edinburgh!

It's 50 miles, 1 hour and 40 minutes by train.
If you're from Southern England do you just accept that you don't return for any weekend during term time.

Just thinking of booking an open day there but wondering if it's just too far?
Which is a shame as it's very highly rated for maths which my son wants to study.
Any thoughts?

F&D fudge doughnuts and coffee towers. I could eat one of each right now!!
I had a job in F&D for one day though, felt sick by the time I went home and wanted to throw the cakes at the next person who asked for them in a bloody box!! Couldn’t face going back the next day 😂 not even for the free cakes at break time!

F and D have now opened a sit in coffee shop in South St.

St Andrews uni is a uni in it's own right. Nothing to do with Edinburgh.

St Andrews was DD's first choice, but she ended up at her second, Uni of Edinburgh. We're from the south and it was 330 miles away. She was more than happy to go that far.

The first year we drove her up there, she came home for Xmas and we visited in February. We were then into lockdown and she stayed at home for second year (due to fact lockdown restrictions were tougher on students up there and she could work 39 hours pw here, as well as studying!). Third year she was abroad and we saw her at Xmas and visited in April. Final year, she only came home at Xmas. It's done her good, she's earned to get on with it and sorts all her own problems out.

Lol it’s like calling Royal Holloway London when it’s in Egham 😂

Distance-wise it's more like calling Royal Holloway Brighton!

Except that it is a college of the University of London so that’s a perfectly accurate thing to say!

Yeah it’s perfectly OK to call it London when it’s Egham. Near Staines.

Love that OP never came back to explain where the "Edinburgh" part came from.

This may shock you OP but The University of St Andrews is in St Andrews.

It's all about the pies people!

Bridies you mean?

Unless the demographic at St Andrews has changed a lot since my day, the majority of students will have cars. Also many will have family with second homes in Scotland.

It's definitely changed since my day, if that was your experience! But with a significant split between the yahs and the other (in the 1990s) I was possibly hanging out with a different demographic. it may not have changed, and my sample may not be representative.

JessicaBrassica · 14/09/2023 17:25

If he's looking at maths, it's also worth flagging that Warwick is not in Warwick either.

RomaniIteDomum · 14/09/2023 17:26

Bridies you mean?
No, that would be Sadlers of Forfar.

Are you the OPs geography teacher by any chance?

You used to get bridies in the all night bakery!

RomaniIteDomum · 14/09/2023 18:17

Aye but they're not what F&D are known for.

So sorry but I really don’t follow. As to OP’s point St Andrews has no affiliation with Edinburgh because it’s neither located there nor is it part of Edinburgh University. Yes Egham is in Surrey but Royal Holloway is a member of the University of London. So it’s also known as RH London. There’s also a University of London Paris and no one would claim that Paris is trying it on pretending it’s in London because that would be ridiculous. RH London is not an inaccurate claim, because it doesn’t refer to the location of the university. Am I missing something?

TheSpikySpinosaurus · 14/09/2023 19:25

Omg, the all night bakery. What a great invention.

LetMeEnfoldYou · 14/09/2023 19:27

Pies = pehs = Dundee
Bridies = Forfar

😁

As a mainlander (who was slightly resentful that the east coast mainline to London was much quicker) I was a big fan of the 10.24 west coast mainline train from leuchars. I would travel home for the holidays with friends from Manchester, Cheshire, stoke and Penzance. It was such a party train!

I mostly travelled by train. Dm came with me at the start of first term and my parents came up for a week near the end of the summer term in first year and third year.

I did 2 mid-term trips home - one in first year leaving after lectures on Thursday for my school prize giving on the Friday, but I travelled back overnight for a field trip on the Saturday. I also came home for a local conference for my dissertation in 4th year. I don't remember other people going home either.

Newgirls · 15/09/2023 08:11

Being 50 miles from edinburgh seems to suit the place. Times and Guardian have both ranked St Andrews above Cambridge and Oxford this year.

Zanatdy · 15/09/2023 17:15

Was my son’s first choice for a while. It was a long way from Surrey. So he went to Warwick instead (Maths)

Too right.

Tbf even the Scottish Government often seem to forget about anything outside the central belt.

Cascais6 · 15/09/2023 18:15

It is very far north and remote. There is a reason they sent Prince William there. No train station. In London terms, it's almost halfway to the Arctic Circle. It is an isolated place and very grey. The wind can be something else. It's the same latitude as southern Sweden. The bleak weather and isolation can play havoc with mental health, unless you're someone who is used to it - eg. someone from the Hebrides or Shetland etc. Don't forget, you would be 4 years there. That's a looooong time.
