Does anyone from down south go to St Andrews university? I didn't realise it was 50 miles away from Edinburgh?

Why do they call it At Andrews university Edinburgh when it's nowhere near Edinburgh!

It's 50 miles, 1 hour and 40 minutes by train.
If you're from Southern England do you just accept that you don't return for any weekend during term time.

Just thinking of booking an open day there but wondering if it's just too far?
Which is a shame as it's very highly rated for maths which my son wants to study.
Any thoughts?

I agree that it was acknowledged as a good uni ( you needed respectable exam results but not better than you needed for Edinburgh or Glasgow) but was a quirky choice, everyone I knew from my small Scottish town who went there had English parents! The rest of us just used to choose Edinburgh or Glasgow based on personal preference if we had the grades.

There were 3 of us went from my ( local) High School. There were many English students and also Americans. In my house I lived with 3 medics who came to do the first part of their degree before Manchester - 1 from Glasgow, 1 from Edinburgh and 1 from Manchester. I knew many Scots though.

@YupIKnow asking for Latin wouldn't have been that unusual back then. Also, as a Scot I am well aware that it is an ancient University but so are Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

@JaninaDuszejko there was no requirement for Latin at the other Scottish ones at that time. It's not a competition between Unis 😃it's just a fact.
