Daily Mail University League table...

In my scanning of news online I found it...
No subject tables.
Can only look at headlines on free version. Not seen a Daily Mail table before. Guessing new for them.
Obviously, as with all tables pinch of salt needed!

I like the fact that you can personalise the rankings using the sliders for what is important to you.

DinkyDaisy · 09/09/2023 07:59

My ds had Surrey for his insurance. He chose Bath in the end but I see on many important measures Surrey does very well.

I did not fiddle with the different parameters. Some of the Universities just within or outside of the top 10 are interesting. Surrey, Loughborough, Bath, Sheffield, Strathclyde etc. All Universities that get mentioned hereas strong for various subjects and suggests it is important to look beyond Russell Group.

RowdyOther · 09/09/2023 08:07

Sheffield is RG.

Morty12 · 09/09/2023 08:12

Surrey was also high up in the latest Complete Uni guide tables.

DinkyDaisy · 09/09/2023 08:34

Surrey loses points on entry tariff on league tables. I think that is unfair. When you dig deeper it shows how well it does on other parameters...

whats the DM’s criteria for top spot “least woke” or something?

stubiff · 09/09/2023 08:59

@GodessOfThunder
constructive again!

stubiff · 09/09/2023 09:15

Actually @GodessOfThunder there are two filters in there that you would like, 90%+ State and 10%+ Private

Sheffield is RG.

I know it is, and my post carefully did not suggest it wasn't. And indeed know it is excellent for some subjects including engineering.

However it does not always get the love on here that places, like Bristol, do. Birmingham also popped up high on the list.

Needmoresleep · 09/09/2023 09:29

Another for Godess of Thunder.

"The ranking is the only one to assess the fairness of university admissions policies, measured by the proportion of first generation students – those whose parents did not go to university - admitted to each institution."

The fact that it is a build your own rankings with the ability to weigh factors that might be important to you/your DC sounds useful. It would be good if they could add in per subject data. Its pretty inevitable that specialist universities like Imperial and LSE will do well if future earnings are given much weight.

Whatever your intention, I disagree that the fact that Sheffield is RG was clear from your post.
I would very much agree, however, that it does have a somewhat lower profile on MN than it might.

Sorry, Imperial is great. More a dig at the Mail. I find it interesting all the papers’ - Times, Guardian and presumably the Mail’s too political/ideological stances can be seen in the metrics and methodology used in these rankings. Just curious as to how the Mail approaches it.

I have to say I read it that way too. Sheff is a great Uni

stubiff · 09/09/2023 10:23

@GodessOfThunder appreciate you were having a dig!
Easy solution for those who are not sure of the papers - use CUG. Or the filters/sliders on DM. Almost certainly the underlying data will all be from the same place, ie not the paper.

Piggywaspushed · 09/09/2023 12:20

I don't think the CUG one is even bias free tbh.

Wondering why theDM suddenly wants to get in on league table act!

Pondering whether to look or not...

Dabralor · 09/09/2023 12:22

A daily mail university league table 😬 - now that's a contradiction in terms!

I did. Nothing happened.

We may have to survey your future posting habits to check.

Piggywaspushed · 09/09/2023 12:41

My phone doesn't like it!

boys3 · 09/09/2023 12:41

The Graun certainly has its idiosyncrasies, although in reality these are more limited than often made out on MN. However the DM table takes things to a another level.

The DM's political leanings are clear. Queen's Belfast does not even make it into the table at all! Presumably reflecting the DM's disapproval of the Windsor Agreement. Ranking Imperial top fits well with its Grammar School expansion agenda. Placing Exeter 28th clearly an appeal to its Red Wall readership aspirations. Moment of transparency - I'm not a huge DM fan.

Overall rankings from each guide - in ascending order of the CUG to 40 - in the pic. The next ST is due out very fairly soon, so it will be interesting to see what that shows.

It will be interesting to see how much use of this will be made in my institution’s publicity material.

boys3 · 09/09/2023 13:35

Looks like the Graun’s latest Uni table is out as well this weekend if I’m reading things correctly- never a guarantee on that.
