You don’t have to be rude or condescending about it. I can’t see why you think Kitty’s post was either of those things.

I think we would all be much happier if we stopped reading the press - The Telegraph had a scare story about international students and clearing places today but until the UK clearing vacancies update later this week it is not based on anything concrete.

KittyMcKitty · 14/08/2023 21:27

@Durham2023 Ive just reread my post as I was confused that you said I called you “Hey dude” - apologies if you read it this was but “dud” was just a typo for “did” - I am the worlds worst proof reader and have fat fingers so I’m afraid my posts have typos. If this is what has upset you then it is a misunderstanding of my typing. You can rest assured that I have never and will never call anyone “dude”.

I get that emotions are high at the moment - I am very relieved that it is my youngest child doing A levels this year and we will never have to go through it again. I was only trying to be reassuring.

Properly freaking out right now - DD has been logging in to her firmed Uni portal online everyday just recently just to check nothing had changed or updated. But tonight the website won't even let her sign in it just hangs - nothing wrong with our internet connection, UCAS is loading. DD is convinced it won't let her sign in because they've seen her results, rejected her and deleted her off of their system. Please tell me I'm being ridiculous.

Bristol closed all access to their portal from 31/7

i wouldn't read too much into it

Durham2023 · 14/08/2023 21:30

@KittyMcKitty

Thanks. I also apologise for misunderstanding and miscommunication in my response to Fareast.

I agree on all points. Nothing is completely black and white.

Best of luck to both of our DCs.

KittyMcKitty · 14/08/2023 21:30

On a positive note re Bristol I noticed that they’d changed their message from “we have no clearing spaces for home applicants” in early clearing to “log in on the 17th to see any vancancies we may have” - obv it’s just semantics and may mean nothing but you never know …

This is all so useful.

When you phone a Uni to try to get a clearing place what info do they need other that Ucas number, A level and GCSE subject/grades/boards, Degree course and code?
Do applicants have a mini interview and say why they want to go that uni and that course?

Yes you need your UCAS number, exam grades etc. some will interview you on the day of possible (we do).

MumblesParty · 15/08/2023 20:49

Not sure if this has already been asked - but the clearing places that are showing now - are these the ones that are genuine ie they’ve already allocated the places to the pupils that they now know have got the grades, and yet they still have spaces left?

PrivateSchoolTeacherParent · 15/08/2023 20:51

I believe, but am not 100% certain, that the unis have frozen everything until Thursday morning when they will do a bulk update. So they're not changing anything "in real time" right now, to avoid any accidental early decisions being communicated.

It's still a moveable feast at the moment. Some unis can take a few days to decide whether to take their firm offer holders who had near misses, which of course leaves those applicants' insurance unis hanging.

FarEast · 15/08/2023 23:13

And sometimes universities will offers slightly different degree - often a way of diverting not-quite-successful applicants from very over subscribed degrees to related programmes. For example, in the Humanities often combined honours degrees are in demand so an applicant who slips by one or so grades may be offered single honours in one of the subjects.

Just popping back in to wish all your DCs the best of luck today. 🤞

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 17/08/2023 06:37

me and ds been sat drinking tea since 6am, he says he’s fine and not worried but he normally doesn’t get up for at least another 4 hours so I know that’s not strictly true!

BabyStopCryin · 17/08/2023 08:10

I’m off for a lie down now. Hope everyone is ok!

FarEast · 17/08/2023 08:14

Hope it's going well for everyone, whatever. IME of 65 years of living, & teaching undergrads, people generally get where they need to go, maybe by a different route.

And breathe ...

BabyStopCryin · 17/08/2023 08:17

Indeed. Life has a way of working around - it may take an odd route here and there but usually it’s ok. There are plenty of options out there.

FarEast · 17/08/2023 11:24

But it’s hard to understand this at 18 or 20, I know.

Again, it depends on the uni. And no doubt also depends on the strength of the application cohort of that particular year. That is, the number of applicants holding firm offers and the general grade profile on results day. Universities will always try and take the best students they can.

At our uni, if an applicant slipped by a grade on one or two subjects (eg AAA to ABB), there are clear mit circs and the application is strong overall (range of subjects relevant to the course, good person statement, good reference), then it's likely we would take this into consideration and make the offer unconditional.

A caveat to this is if the results are below our grade floor: in these circumstances, our hands would be tied. This grade floor can change from year to year, and depends on the strength of the overall applicant pool, how many have chosen us as their firm choice, how many have 'dropped' to us as insurance and so on. The grade floor can change in the run up to exam results day - it all depends on how it all goes.

As you can see, it's all a bit of a dark art with the universities all dancing around each other! It somehow all shakes down though ... and then the cycle starts all over again!

Morning @JoanThursday

My dd was rejected by Bristol. Lots of tears.

But - her insurance UEA accepted her and shes off to study medicine in Sept.

Both my husband and I loved UEA when we visited.

Thank you for all your help, much appreciated 💐

TwoItalianApples · 18/08/2023 12:17

Our results slip shows confusing numbers and lists. It says points at the very end, but they seem less than the equivalent ucas points. I'm finding it hard to follow and the ucas points calculator isn't the same as these

PrivateSchoolTeacherParent · 18/08/2023 12:21

Results slips are prepared by schools based on the data sent by exam boards, and some are very confusing indeed. If you could post a pic (with identifying info crossed out!) maybe we could try to work out what's going on?

TwoItalianApples · 18/08/2023 12:38

Thank you , I'll try and edit a photo.

@Thefatbutteredpig - aww I'm sorry she didn't get her firm, but I really hope she's looking forward to going to UEA now. What a week for these young people!

Meanwhile, my eyes are crossed from reading too many spreadsheets and I can't string two coherent words together. I'm on standby for subject related Qs tomorrow, but not on the phones. Knackered but happy! I do enjoy this part of my job - and looking forward to meeting our new students in the autumn!
