I was under the impression that the cap on home student numbers had been removed (except for medicine/dentistry. Has it come back again, or do you work in a medical school? Thanks!

@Matchingcollarandcuffs I also realise (from another thread!) that the rules are different in Scotland and in NI. Sorry for jumping to the conclusion that you're in England.

@Gardensaremyworld

Thanks I am already aware about Durham taking their time. However, some of the posts from admission’s teams here gave me some hope that her case will be carefully considered and that’s all I am hoping for. My fear was(is) that she will be rejected by a computer algorithm.

We are not going for clearing and can wait few extra days. However, I understand those that are going for clearing would want to hear a decision as soon as possible.

Hi Durham,
I'm in a similar situation as my DC fell in two HL IB subjects (very very unexpectedly) 😑
We have to wait till Thursday as well to see if the uni will still accept DC but it's highly unlikely.
Good luck to everyone's DC. 🍀

I am so sorry to hear that. There’s nothing we can do except hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Best of luck to your DC on Thursday.

UcasSchmucas · 14/08/2023 16:39

Thanks. We also have a DC who will receive IGCSE results on Wednesday so it's an 'interesting' week!
Best of luck to your DD. It's great that she's happy with her insurance. Unfortunately my DC has changed their mind about going to their insurance so it'll be resits and a gap year for them!

Not necessarily - at my uni, we treat all applicants the same. We would consider AAB instead of AAA to be a very near miss. If there is strong PS, a good portfolio of subjects for the subject concerned and any essential subjects are at the required grade, then we would look at that favourably.

Great bit of info thanks! My ds in a similar situation as a deferred entry applicant and thinks he might miss a grade for a competitive course at a competitive uni, so wondering whether it is worth him calling up the uni if he misses… If UCAS updates his application on Thursday with a rejection is it still worth a call or just a waste of time and better to apply again in gap year? Also is it a waste of time applying again to the same uni next year if already rejected by not getting the grades? TIA

@UcasSchmucas

How stressful! I hope everything will turn out for the best for your family.

I sometimes wish my daughter would take a gap year. She is just getting a handle on her emotions and perhaps needs another year to emotionally mature but at the end it is her choice to make.

Can I remind people, once again, that quotas (either internal to a university or capped by the government) for Domestic and International students are separate. International students don't "take" UK students' places (indeed, they heavily subsidise them).

HappySonHappyMum · 14/08/2023 18:37

Properly freaking out right now - DD has been logging in to her firmed Uni portal online everyday just recently just to check nothing had changed or updated. But tonight the website won't even let her sign in it just hangs - nothing wrong with our internet connection, UCAS is loading. DD is convinced it won't let her sign in because they've seen her results, rejected her and deleted her off of their system. Please tell me I'm being ridiculous.

More likely that the uni now have the results and have closed everything down since the embargo started. Don't read too much into it.

They most probably have closed the portal so that they won’t accidentally reveal the results.

The university should have communicated this. For example Durham has informed my DD that the applicant portal will be unavailable till the results day, even though my dd being an IB student has already her results and is just waiting for a decision on her near miss grades. Hope this helps.

Hi,
Another anxious parent here. Does anyone know if it's realistic to hope for a place at Kings through Clearing? My DC had a complete change of heart after UCAS deadline, rejected all her choices and now only wants Kings. She's predicted all A*s but worried it might not be the case.

HappySonHappyMum · 14/08/2023 18:55

@Titsywoo @Durham2023 I am praying you are both correct - Thursday can't come soon enough in our house😶

@FarEast

I am one of the posters who brought up the case of international students. I certainly don’t think they take the place of UK students in general. In fact being from ethnic minority, having a good proportion of international students was always a plus for us in our assessment of universities. The fear, and I really don’t know, was that near misses don’t get a look if the university can give their place to international students for lack proper investments, I hope and trust that universities will make their best to assess near miss candidates fairly and if an international student would make a better contribution then so be it.

tribpot · 14/08/2023 19:00

@HappySonHappyMum I'd point out to her that deleting her account would break the embargo on the results, there's no way the university would have done that (nor would they do it on results day either, it makes no sense! But I appreciate our teens are in a heightened state of anxiety now).

They absolutely are correct. There's a freeze in access once the results are released. Every uni will do this as a way of ensuring applicants don't inadvertently get their results early - the consequences of that can be catastrophic for the uni.

HappySonHappyMum · 14/08/2023 19:21

@titchy If nothing else she is now preparing for Clearing "just in case". Roll on 8am Thursday morning. It can't come soon enough here.

KittyMcKitty · 14/08/2023 20:19

@FarEast the university won’t give a near miss place to an international student - if the reject the near miss it will go to another UK student. They have separate quotas.

Here are Durhams published figures:

https://www.durham.ac.uk/media/durham-university/study/study---undergraduate/how-to-apply/documents/Applications-per-Place-2020-21.pdf

Dud you say that your dd is hoping to study chemistry? There are 22 spaces for International students and 89 for home. You can see there is much more competition for the international students with 10.8 applicants per place compared to home at 5.4.

KittyMcKitty · 14/08/2023 20:22

Apologies I @‘d the wrong person apologies @FarEast you of course know this I meant to tag @Durham2023

medianewbie · 14/08/2023 20:42

@JoanThursday
My Ds applied through clearing as he has his results now (Scotland), but only just before embargo. One Uni has today emailed him an offer of a place & he has to fill in the ((RPS?) button on the form to formally accept & then it goes off to UCAS. He hasn't heard back from the other Uni yet (they said they'd do the RPS bit 'for him'??) Is he best to hold fire till Thurs am, or is that dangerous?

medianewbie · 14/08/2023 20:47

I should say DS isn't trying to play the system- 1 Uni he has to move away & one he can commute to. He's Autistic & not sure which he can cope best with. I'm worried he'll dither & possibly lose 1 or if he's lucky enough to get it, 2 offers

Durham2023 · 14/08/2023 20:56

@KittyMcKitty

don’t know why are you continuing this conversation, and trying to prove that international students are a benefit. You’re preaching to the converted. I have been an international student myself albeit to another country and would love my DD to go to a university that had accepted international students. In fact, a university without international students wouldn’t offer her the wealth of experience I am hoping for and was fortunate to receive myself, making friends from all over the world.

I do not know how the admissions work and fortunately have not given much thought to it except last few day as the A level results day is approaching (and now seem to be totally fixated on it). It is natural for me to try to assess her chances and build up different scenarios and many of these scenarios will have nothing to do with how things are done, that is why I posted so that I can be enlightened.

You don’t have to be rude or condescending about it.

Titsywoo · 14/08/2023 21:03

How is @KittyMcKitty being condescending? Sounds more like she is just giving you facts to stop you being worried.

iwasthewalrus · 14/08/2023 21:15

If it’s a non-competitive course, they may be willing to accept him for 2024 entry (which would be done by accepting via Clearing and deferring). Realistically if they have clearing spaces this year they probably will next year too so if you are able to speak with the department (assuming non-centralised admissions) then it could well be possible and would save the hassle of reapplying.

It’s a shame this wasn’t resolved before results week.

Yes and I accepted it few pages ago even accepted that I had not communicated well. I was clarifying my position to Fareast about why I wrote my original post. I didn’t need to be called hey dude and given evidence that Durham accept more UK students, which I gathered from offer holders day anyway.

I just needed a clarification about the admission process, as this thread was so informative I thought someone will be along to disillusion me and they did(albeit I should have phrased my post better).

I also needed a space for my tiny violin so I could lament about how close she was to achieving her conditions and how a series of unfortunate events worked against her.

KittyMcKitty · 14/08/2023 21:20

@Durham2023 firstly I apologise if you feel I was condescending- not my intention and of course that’s the problem with written as opposed to spoken communication.

in answer to your question I was “continuing the conversation” because you had again expressed concern that your dd may lose out to an international student and I was trying to give you confidence that a) this wouldn’t happen and b) it was harder to get a place as an international student - there is much narrative on MN and the like inferring that international students are taking the places which should go to home students. I don’t have any feelings either way re International students really - diversity is of course a good thing (although there could be an argument as to how much diversity wealthy international students bring) and of course the revenue from them is certainly helping fund STEM course in particular. But that aside our universities are now part of a global market which is here to stay.

Again apologies that you took what were intended as words of reassurance in a negative way. Your dd sounds like she has a very good chance of getting a place and I hope she gets the result she is after flowers 💐
