DD is John Snow

lastdayatschool · 26/08/2023 14:20

@Roobyshoes if you join WIWIKAU on Facebook, you'll probably be able to get your answers there - either via a search or by starting a new thread.

It's full of threads about individual halls, colleges, etc. at all universities, and what the rooms and kitchens are like

grass321 · 26/08/2023 15:28

It's not self -catering but my son's Collingwood room had a very large under the bed storage area that's lockable. Meant he could use the train back and forth in the holidays.

The students without en-suites could leave their stuff in the room during the holidays, he only had to move as he had an en-suite.

Fruitygal · 26/08/2023 16:40

@Roobyshoes which college ? JB, South, JS or Stevo ?

Ofcourse44 · 26/08/2023 18:46

Does everyone else’s DC have their enrolment log in details? Mine has no college allocation or any log in details. Just had the message saying they had sent her an email by mistake and since then nothing. Is that because her college hasn’t been allocated yet?

EwwSprouts · 26/08/2023 20:12

@Ofcourse44 we’re in the same boat: achieved offer, provisionally Collingwood, but nothing except for the email sent in error. Don’t know why they can’t let them register with uni and subject dept while the college allocations get sorted. As PP said, it’s not unusual for students at many unis to not get 1st choice hall of residence, it’s the not getting any college/hall of residence over a week after results day that’s so weird. They seem to have set a deadline of 6th Sept, but the module selection goes live on 1st Sept. Frustrating.

That’s the same as dd.

MFLDurhamMum · 26/08/2023 20:33

@Ofcourse44 DD still doesn't have her log in details or college allocation. Apparently It might take until 6th September. There are a few freshers still waiting. 23% as of Thursday). See https://www.durham.ac.uk/colleges-and-student-experience/colleges/your-college---undergraduate/august-confirmation---college-allocation/

I stupidly booked a last minute family holiday abroad in September so we're bound to get something then - will be stressing about how to print, sign and scan accommodation agreement.

Sigh.

Roobyshoes · 27/08/2023 08:35

Thanks @EwwSprouts @Fruitygal @grass321@lastdayatschool DC has en-suite room in Stephenson confirmed so any insight there would be great. I had a look on that FB group and could see a few room pics.

I’m so sorry for all of you anxiously waiting for college allocations. Purely for balance and to reassure the staff members on here @SchnitzelVonCrummsTum and @Mytholmroyd , DC says they have received log in details and been notified that no modules can be chosen ahead of 1st Sept so something is working, just a shame it’s not for everyone 💐

grass321 · 27/08/2023 08:46

He went up for preseason hockey at I think stayed at Josephine Butler or Stevenson. I've attached some photos if that's helpful

In his room at Collingwood, there was a metal rack by the wardrobe that you could stack large plastic boxes on for extra storage. The en-suite wasn't huge but you probably could store a few bits in there.

The underbed storage fitted in a tv, printer and pretty much all of his stuff except a suitcase of clothes. You had to buy a couple of padlocks. He also had the option of leaving boxes in his friends' rooms who didn't have to move out over the holidays.

I think they're funny about things like kettles and toasters in the room so I you might run the risk of them being confiscated.

Fruitygal · 27/08/2023 10:02

@Roobyshoes looks like @EwwSprouts is going to be your go to as her DS was a Stevo.

what’s the course he’s doing ?

grass321 · 27/08/2023 10:37

I've checked with my son and the photos are of Stevo

Is that a camp bed ?

Surprised, given how new those colleges are, how dated/basic that room looks.

My Aidans rooms in early 90-93 were better furnished.

No it's a normal bed. We must have briefly crossed as I was at Aidans from 92-96 (and was lazy enough to live in college for all three years). My room (A extension) now has an en-suite which surprised me as it wasn't that big to start with.

Jaxx · 27/08/2023 13:37

Stevo was Ustinov so isn’t that new. The rooms do look small but the floor space for en-suites have to come from somewhere.

EwwSprouts · 27/08/2023 15:12

@Roobyshoes The photos look very similar but not the exact layout of DS's room last year. He chose Stevo because the rooms are bigger than South & Snow. The rooms are bigger as older and it was the post grad college originally. He's tall and we worked out if he had been in either of those other two in Covid he would not have been able to fully layout ever. (Their beds are bookended by ensuite and external wall.)

The bed is a proper bed & gives decent under bed storage space. At the end of the bed DS had about 2ft of clear floor space so he put his laundry bag and a box with his kitchen utensils there. (His kitchen cupboard he kept just for food.) The ensuite is tiny but does the job.

The wardrobe looks right but his desk was newer, with drawers underneath and had a return. It came with an anglepoise lamp. He had three small shelves one above the other over one side of the desk. DS has a lot of sports kit and that fitted between the wardrobe and the door.

DS said it was boiling hot in the building from October when the heating went on.

Ask if there is anything specific you want to know.

Just a slightly different perspective for those waiting for accommodation confirmation. My DC has had their firm offer and we visited this weekend as we were passing. We got talking to a senior member of University staff and they said that more than 700 students drop out between A level results and the start of term. So they have to send out accommodation allocations bit by bit, because whilst they can fit extra people into lectures, they can't fit extra beds into colleges, and they need to wait and see who accepts and who pulls put before they can finalise everything.

lastdayatschool · 27/08/2023 20:45

@grass321 yes, I can't imagine any of the rooms on the straights having space for ensuite.

I lived in one of the houses opposite the tennis court in 3rd year, and they were building the new houses then - think they were all due to have en-suite, which seemed an absolute luxury at the time, when we were sharing 2 showers and toilets between 11.

grass321 · 27/08/2023 20:48

Lasydayatschool I had one of the en-suite houses by the tennis court in my final year. It was lovely, with bedrooms for 11 odd people and a lounge and kitchen.

Ofcourse44 · 27/08/2023 21:34

Thanks @Motherhubbardscupboard for that update- it’s very helpful and reassuring. We are still waiting and hoping for something in coming week…

Fruitygal · 28/08/2023 06:25

JS rooms are very new and pleasant my DDs en-suite was lovely and they had a large kitchen with a sofa and large dining table.

Roobyshoes · 28/08/2023 17:08

Thanks to everyone and especially @EwwSprouts and @grass321 for the Stephenson specific insight which is really useful…I will definitely have more questions in the next few weeks 💐Obviously DC needs to be in charge of the whole process (and is doing a great job so far!) but it is so helpful to be able to ask and receive this kind of detail so I can catch anything that falls through the cracks.

Any ideas please how many en-suite rooms share the flat facilities?

Roobyshoes · 28/08/2023 17:10

@grass321 , the Stephenson room pics you posted; are they of an en-suite or standard room please? It has more floor space than I would have anticipated!
