Decent campus unis with a vibe

DD is looking to do Classics or History. She's very keen on a campus uni over a city one.

We went to Warwick today and she loved it. We visited Sussex a fortnight ago...she liked it at the time, but has been superseded by Warwick as it has a much better vibe in her opinion.

Any other campus unis that you'd recommend we look that have a buzzing life and lots of societies no further north than Coventry, no further west than Portsmouth.

Thanks

Personal experience

Of which course/ courses, if you don't mind me asking?

BoohooWoohoo · 19/06/2023 12:06

Birmingham is only a bit further north and a campus.

Does the campus and the vibe really matter? What about the course,TEF and employment statistics?

It's important that a student is happy at uni.
If they don't like where they are living for 3 years they are unlikely to be able to study at their best.
I think location is a valid consideration amongst the other things. Especially for something like history which is offered at numerous unis.

In the latest student satisfaction rankings, Warwick was ranked 17th, making it the highest ranked Russell Group university.

Newcastle was ranked 123rd.

At every university there will be some people who are unhappy.

As others have said, I would keep in mind that campus universities might have a small town feel when you live there in the first year, but in subsequent years, it is a small town that you don't live in.

Perhaps worth saying though that six percentage points separate Warwick, 17th, and Newcastle nestling at joint 123rd with Leeds.

as an aside any LSE grad no doubt appalled that their alma mater finds itself (just) in the top half. 😀

I went to Surrey a million years ago and loved the campus life but still only 15 mins walk into town. I went to visit last year and it's still lovely.
No clue about history or classics.
I live not too far from Birmingham and have to say it's a great city. I've visited friends in halls there and in my youth had nights out with them, as well as spent many years going out in the city. There are a few universities there and it's a busy vibrant multicultural city...definitely worth a look in my opinion, and easy travel to anywhere from the main train station.

Very good point @Seeline

I did classics at Warwick. I’m biased but I think she’s picked the best lol.

Fo reference my other choices were Durham, Exeter, Kent at Canterbury, Swansea and Nottingham.

I really disliked Nottingham at the offer holder open day. Really liked Swansea.

The rest fell in between.

By far the best though was Warwick and I have many happy memories from there.

I’d suggest looking at Birmingham too (my alma mater so I am a bit biased). Great transport links.

DS did screen out some unis that were just too awkward to get to (many hours on the train & multiple changes / long car journey etc) but he did choose one that he could cheaply and easily fly to.

Surrey uni in Guildford - such a lovely campus Uni and right near Guildford which is a great city, next to station too and is a lovely area. Not sure if they do classics tho?

Tree543 · 19/06/2023 15:26

My ds is y13 so we visited a few last summer and autumn. Wanted to like Nottingham but he hated the Jubilee campus where he would have been. The main campus was nicer but the Open day was very disorganised visitors were getting lost, no one seemed to know what accommodation was open. Couldn't wait to leave.
By contrast we decided to go to the Birmingham open day at the last minute and both loved it. Really liked the campus and the accommodation. It had "the vibe'

TizerorFizz · 19/06/2023 20:08

@weebleswobblebuttheydontfalldown Does Surrey offer classics? I suggested it earlier but I’m not sure it does.

@eggsbenedict23 Im with you. Historians/classicists need to think about post grad employment so where you go might matter. Most people can find a uni they like and get the right course too. It’s never one or the other.

Ds and I really liked Surrey campus and it is his Insurance after Bath. Close run thing for him. The campus is lovely and for his course (politics) a good fit for him. Near Guilford, supermarket, station BUT I looked at courses and doesn't seem to do Classics or history... Shame.
