Decent campus unis with a vibe

Globules · 17/06/2023 21:29

DD is looking to do Classics or History. She's very keen on a campus uni over a city one.

We went to Warwick today and she loved it. We visited Sussex a fortnight ago...she liked it at the time, but has been superseded by Warwick as it has a much better vibe in her opinion.

Any other campus unis that you'd recommend we look that have a buzzing life and lots of societies no further north than Coventry, no further west than Portsmouth.

Thanks

My ds looked at Warwick yesterday too. He loved but then today felt that perhaps he’d like a bigger city feel. He’s going to see Bham and it will be interesting to get his feedback.

Warwick history certainly offers a lot and I guess it will depend on what departments can offer, accommodation, cost of living, feel of the place. And grades.

TizerorFizz · 18/06/2023 19:00

@lastdayatschool Three hours away is way too far for frequent home visits. Sport is available at universities. Engaging with friends and uni vibe is best done if you stay there at weekends. Otherwise you miss the vibe!

SilverGlitterBaubles · 18/06/2023 19:03

Have they considered how their needs will change as they get older. Have they considered that campus unis are that are out of town and not necessarily near work and social life. Most end up out of halls and closer to town than uni in shared houses from Year 2 so it's not something I would focus on.

Warwick is very sink or swim
And my dc had a terrible experience there.

It really would be better for her to look at the course and not get sold from a glossy open day.

LegendsBeyond · 18/06/2023 19:27

Lancaster. I don’t get the 3 hour rule. It’s so limiting.

lastdayatschool · 18/06/2023 20:37

@TizerorFizz - have you ever stopped, just for an instant, to consider that not every DC adheres to your prescribed way of being a university student ?

People are different and if someone wants to travel home every weekend to, for example, play sport then there's nothing wrong with that.

And, although its 30+ years since I was a student, I'm fairly certain most university sport still happens on Wednesday afternoons, and that the "vibe" will still be as good on Wednesday and Thursday evenings as it was in my day.

TizerorFizz · 18/06/2023 21:24

@lastdayatschool Others are saying the same. Go pick a fight with them. You are so boring! For you info: sport often happens at weekends. Loads more activities too. In fact nearly everything with friends. Many students actually work in the week these days. They don’t have all nighters on a Tuesday with a Wednesday lecture at 9 am. Weekends are party time. That’s the vibe I assume the DD wants.

Piggywaspushed · 18/06/2023 22:05

Thursday night is student night almost universally...

lastdayatschool · 18/06/2023 22:11

You know what an ad hominem attack is don't you @TizerorFizz ? A sign of desperation.

Yes I would google some of issues they’ve had with the safeguarding of female students. My son worked there briefly and said there was definitely an attitude of entitlement and misogyny.

Bath and Laffbra

WhichWitchWillBeWhich · 18/06/2023 22:28

Bath is nice, my DS has it has his insurance this year. I know it’s further west than Portsmouth but it’s worth considering. It reminded me of a smaller Warwick.

I'd recommend UEA for a small town feel. Norwich is delightful and the campus is really friendly.

Came on to say this. Campus is outside the centre of the city. But close enough if you want to utilise it for shops/'nights out. Beautiful old city. Lots of history. Small shops and cafes. Campus is very pretty in parts. Worth a look.

Fizbosshoes · 18/06/2023 22:49

We said to our DD that ideally she would be in roughlya 3 hr radius. We are about 30 miles outside of London but 3 hours radius covers a fairly wide area. She also wants to be at a campus uni. We are planning to look at Bournemouth, Norwich and Loughborough

elderflowerandpomelo · 18/06/2023 22:53

Warwick is turning into an utter disaster - zero teaching, grotesquely overcrowded. I’d think (many more times than) twice about it. They’re piling undergrads high and giving them cheap pickings. Not a place to go (at the moment) if you want half decent teaching.

Well the problem with that when you live on the coast is that half of it is the sea or France 🤣. That’s why people on the coast always have a big radius on online dating relative to people who live inland.

Yup

NoYou · 18/06/2023 22:58

My dd is doing history at Newcastle. It's a fantastic campus and a good university. There are plenty of people from the south coast there. They fly. It's probably cheaper than driving or the train.

👍🌟🥰 Newcastle has such an amazing vibe

Not Bath! It is awesome but doesn’t offer Classics or History so won’t work for OP’s DC

@Globules Many universities expanded after 2012 when the cap on numbers was lifted. Warwick is still a great university. It is still fairly isolated and doesn’t suit everyone. There not going to be published info on “cheap pickings”. Teaching is also a moot point. History will get 6-8 hours a week. Students do the hours required by research and reading. It’s not taught like a science which will have more contact time. Classics might have more as you have language acquisition. However a lot of that might be self taught.

Typically RG unis do not hand hold and are not like school. It’s a mature learning environment. However you cannot compare Warwick and Winchester! I would shortlist the unis that actually offer Classics! Everyone does history. Then go from there.

Personal experience

Phphion · 19/06/2023 11:18

In the latest student satisfaction rankings, Warwick was ranked 17th, making it the highest ranked Russell Group university.

Newcastle was ranked 123rd.

At every university there will be some people who are unhappy.

As others have said, I would keep in mind that campus universities might have a small town feel when you live there in the first year, but in subsequent years, it is a small town that you don't live in.

eggsbenedict23 · 19/06/2023 11:37

Does the campus and the vibe really matter? What about the course,TEF and employment statistics?
