MFL universities - specifically Exeter

I have been reading old threads on here about modern foreign languages because that is what my DC wants to study. I was taken aback to see on one thread that Exeter is not well-regarded for MFL. Is this actually true? It is the uni my DC likes the look of the most - both the uni and the MFL course. They are also considering Southampton (which we know is good for MFL) but that is as far as research has got so far.

My child is just finishing their first year now at Bristol. It’s meh overall.

V bright at school. Teaching here has been lacklustre and uninspiring. Hoping for better engagement from staff next year.

Accommodation very expensive for next year. Similar to edinburgh, London and other big cities.

My kid has always scorned drugs so no surprise he hasn’t taken any. Same for smoking. He says in his friend group, only one smokes cannabis. He enjoys a drink though. He has made a great group of friends.

Bristol is fine but nothing special. I don’t feel evangelical or defensive about it. Child is happy there. But definitely intellectually under-stimulated, which is a shame for a curious and enthusiastic young person.

Endorse this. My daughter in 2nd year feels same ‘meh’ about Bristol. Loves the city but not the uni so much. She will stick it out but wishes she’d gone to her insurance - Cardiff. Would have saved us thousands too - cost of Bristol rents is shocking

I would like to suggest Swansea. Superb for languages and a lovely place to live. My son did three months at Bristol and hated it - lived in a party, druggie flat at Stoke Bishop - left and started again at Swansea. @TizerorFizz your secondhand anecdata about Bristol is so out of date.

I think Swansea is a hidden gem! I've never met anyone who went there who didn't love it. Also resolutely non-private school if that matters!

DD's best friend at university was privately educated, and she is absolutely not a hooray Henrietta. Interestingly, she had 5 different chemistry teachers at A level because they kept leaving, and needed a tutor to help her achieve her potential, whereas state educated DD had a fantastic and inspirational chemistry teacher and didn't require extra tutoring.

Let's not tar all privately educated students with the same brush.

@Toffeesarethebest my DD is at Bristol and loves the place. V sociable (without any drugs). Not everyone there is a drug addled junkie 😊. Most seem pretty normal humans to me. State school, self catered halls in first year. Maybe that helps ?
