Offer in principle - any ideas

Daughter has just received an email from a uni she's booked an open day for, saying that they are piloting offers in principle for the subject she's interested in. 2024 entry.

Any thoughts?

I agree, such a lovely campus and atmosphere. This scheme is also maybe to encourage people to attend the open days, then let the campus do the rest!

We loved the campus! And DD chuffed with her chat, even though she knows it's still dependent on her grades, and there's no reduced offer.

It’s a clever technique. People who have actually visited are more likely to apply and more likely to accept an offer than someone who hasn’t been.

They hope that more of the better candidates will include them in their 5 choices, and that those who perhaps have more prestigious places in their sights, might make them their Firm, or even Insurance which they will then take-up if they don’t meet their Firm offer.

Evidence will be there that people who visit for an Open Day are more likely to apply and more likely to Firm or Insure. Those who’ve had an offer in principle are perhaps even more likely presumably. And as has been said, the uni loses nothing…they would have offered to these guys anyway, but now perhaps they feel a bit more valued than without the offer in principle chat. It’s all about the margins for these unis….a few more top candidates taking places and more bums on seats and less having to go to clearing to fill places….unis want to avoid that!
