@chopc DD1 is certainly very determined and strategic. Her sisters are quite different.

Barnard is the women’s college in Columbia University.

My twins just turned 19 and have just finished the equivalent to A levels.
We don’t have BTECs or any equivalent at 16. It is straight academics only.
Twin 2 is doing the one year MT foundation with the hope of doing a BA in a drama school afterwards.

raspberryrippleicecream · 22/07/2023 19:01

Just found you all again. Lovely to read all the updates. DS2 is doing fine, not seen much of him as he has spent most of the time since finishing exams involved in his extra curricular activities at uni, which won't finish until mid August. On of them pays enough to be his summer job though, so that's something. I'm watching with interest as others DC approach their final year, DS doing an integrated masters, but is adding an extra year next year in Computer Science, so will do a five year degree.

SeasonFinale · 07/08/2023 20:59

Update post internship:

Has been offered a post grad job.
As he ranked in top 5% he has been allowed to defer and also interview for a (preferred) role in a different department.

He has deferred to Sept 2025 as he wants to pursue some other options but lovely to have an in the bag backstop job waiting!

ChimneyPot · 07/08/2023 23:41

@SeasonFinale congratulations to your DS. It may not be exactly what he wants but it is great to have it as a back up.

SeasonFinale · 07/08/2023 23:45

Thanks @ChimneyPot and I appreciate that it will be many people's dream job (and still may end up being his!)

chopc · 08/08/2023 08:07

Congratulations to your DS@SeasonFinale !!! Wonderful to have options in life which is the aim of the game in my opinion.

It is truly lovely reading everyone's updates especially about siblings too. I've had a small surgery and am sofa bound for a short time whilst everything heals. I have books loaded on my Kindle, films to watch and Dh has told me he will staple me to the sofa if I disobey doctor's orders and move. I do like being looked after but normally I am also looking after everyone else too. Feels a bit indulgent in a strange way. But I am going to make the most of it. This is my absolute favourite time of year, I love autumn and I can't go for a walk so just the usual throw the windows wide open.

@SeasonFinale I am late to the party but huge congratulations to your son. Even if he has deferred it it is a brilliant position to be in.

Ds absolutely loved his internship, feedback was incredibly positive from his team and the managers. So much so he has been offered a graduate position and has taken it with both hands. He will start July 2024. I was hoping he would get a summer off but he is incredibly keen to get started.

Ds2 is finalising his personal statement and they get to read their teacher reference next week. So here we go again although no Oxbridge application or entrance exams thank goodness but the whole waiting, waiting, waiting for universities to either offer or reject will no doubt be stressful.

KnittedCardi · 15/09/2023 10:55

Such amazing news that some DC's already have jobs lined up. I am deeply impressed, well done them.

DD is now mid application to her Oxford Masters. She is very interested in becoming an academic in history, and along with the theology, she has a brilliant research proposal, and two very esteemed tutorial referees. Her gap is in the supra curricular, as apart from her studies, she hasn't had the opportunity to do much else. I don't doubt that her academics and proposal are up there with the best, but when you are up against US applicants with all their extra bells and whistles (and fees), it's a difficult call.

She is settled back in her flat for the 3rd year, and apart from still sharing with the boyfriend, which is becoming increasingly fraught..... I won't eleborate, all is generally well. She has her car down in Exeter now, so has a lot more freedom.

BenchOfCompany · 15/09/2023 16:47

@KnittedCardi sounds like she knows what she wants academically and probably what she doesn't want, this particular boyfriend. It is a good place to be and re the boyfriend is a learning curve. I do think as people enter their final year and realise they are on different intended paths to their boyfriends/girlfriends is can become a bit fraught. Been there, done that. Best of luck to her for her masters proposal. The car will certainly cheer her up.

We didn't exactly move Ds back in but we went up last weekend to start his tenancy, took a few bits up, he did a stock check for food staples to see what to add to his Tesco delivery order. He will be moving up end of September.

Longtimenewsee · 12/10/2023 11:20

How are we all?
Hope Dc are thriving at third year / year out/ years abroad/ years in industry / whatever path they are on. 😊

All seems good with Dd. She has to make decisions about year 4 (year abroad) soon but apart from that, she had a lovely eased in start to the year ( no labs/lab reports for the first week or so) .
She is a college parent this year with 2 children and has been enjoying mentoring.

Shes stayed in same accommodation .. so much easier!

Still waiting for year 2 work/ exams to be marked.. anyone else?

MidLifeCrisis007 · 12/10/2023 11:40

We are just back from visiting DS in Kyrgyzstan where he is spending his year abroad (along with a few others from Durham, Cambridge and Edinburgh). We were completely blown away by the beauty of the place, and the lovely people we met along the way. This was my view last Thursday!

He is busy applying for internships for next Summer. I can't believe how time-consuming it all is for him.....we had none of that in our day!

Another path ....... and it goes on
Majaso12 · 12/10/2023 13:17

Dd is on her placement year at GSK and really enjoying it.

The exam she had to do in September because of a panic attack in the summer exam went really well, but it hasn’t been marked and no idea when because that exam is affected by the marking boycott. She did well in all her other exams and coursework, so just waiting on that one. Hope it gets marked this year!

ChimneyPot · 12/10/2023 16:14

@MidLifeCrisis007 that looks amazing. What a great experience.
DD is still doing her summer internship 10 hours per week remotely. The money and the experience are both too good to turn down and she fits the hours around her class schedule
She has a different internship lined up for next summer.

I have another DD in the US now as well. DD2 is in Barnard@Columbia and DD3 is doing Musical Theatre in London so the house is a lot quieter with just DS

Longtimenewsee · 12/10/2023 19:39

Wow @MidLifeCrisis007 fantastic pic!

dd is also applying for internships for next summer.. it seems such a lot of work
@Majaso12 - so pleased the exam went well .. must have been such a relief for her.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 13/10/2023 13:36

Enjoying all the updates and very impressed with how organised your YP are with placements and internships.

@MidLifeCrisis007 Love your photo what an amazing opportunity.

My DD is loving year 3. She has stayed with the same housemates, and although this includes her ex boyfriend, they are all getting on and had a great freshers week. My DD is quite conscientious so I'm hoping that she is upping her hours on work, she has been on campus at the weekend so that is encouraging. DD is throwing herself into her society as VP this year so lots to organising and her social life is good.

DD doesn't have any definite plans after graduation but would love to work abroad and has something in mind so if that comes off she will plan a gap year around this. I think after covid and lockdown some time to breathe, work and travel might be a good option and then start working in 2025.

Jan069 · 13/10/2023 17:58

Great to hear so many updates.

@Dobbyismyabsolutefav Sounds like an excellent beginning for your DD's third year.

Belated congrats to @SeasonFinale and @BenchOfCompany DS's for bagging some fabulous post grad jobs. DD did her internship with one of the Big 4 in July and is still waiting to hear of a job offer or rejection. She's understandably somewhat lost interest in this employer getting their act together and switched her attentions to travelling to NZ and Aus instead. She won't even be 21 when she graduates so I'm more than happy for her to spread her wings a bit before taking on a big job.

Great to hear that @Majaso12 DD is enjoying her placement at GSK - what a great name to start her CV with. I guess there's a possibility of a permanent job there too.

@KnittedCardi Best of luck to your DD for her Oxford Masters Application.

DS did well in his PGDL (Postgraduate Diploma in Law) and is now studying for his SQE (Solicitor Qualifying Exam). It's still 11 months before he actually starts his training contract with his law firm and earns some money. He's fed up of studying but enjoying the social life with the other future trainee solicitors at his law school.

@Longtimenewsee Good luck to your DD for her Y4 abroad plans.

@MidLifeCrisis007 Wow just Wow 🤩 , what amazing memories your DS is making.

Tenpastseven · 13/10/2023 21:35

Hey all. Goodness Gracious, I can't believe I found you all here again. I'm logging on to begin digging for useful content for the next child in my production line...
Hope you and yours and all doing well.

chopc · 15/10/2023 14:44

Hi! Was thinking this thread has been quiet as I didn't get any alerts of any updates !

Congratulations to your DS @BenchOfCompany

Lovely to hear everyone else' updates

DS down in the dumps a little as the kitchen in his flat is so dirty as none of the others would clean up. I offered to pay for a cleaner (I know I know but I just need him to get through to year healthy) but he said they will do it ......

OP posts:
SeasonFinale · 15/10/2023 16:34

@Majaso12 if it makes her feel any better DS is still waiting for grades from 2 modules which he took exams for in June that are subject to MAB.

One summer placement he has applied for have said they need these by 15 December otherwise they won't consider him!

BenchOfCompany · 15/10/2023 17:46

@chopc your poor son, it is awful when other people make you live in squalor. I do completely understand the cleaner thought because last year when Ds's ktichen looked like a health hazard after he returned from Easter break we considered it. This year seems a lot better which he is very pleased about.

I am loving the updates especially about siblings with law degrees and musical theatre! Wow @MidLifeCrisis007 that photo is stunning. I can only dream of holidays at the minute. Ds2 is year 13 so has said absolutely no holiday until he has finished his exams. With Ds1 starting his job in July this is looking like a very tight week we might be able to squeeze in at the end of June.

I am now planning Christmas things to give me some joy.

Majaso12 · 15/10/2023 17:58

@SeasonFinale. Would it be worth telling her university he needs those results? Not sure if it would make any difference though.

I don’t think it’s going to be over any time soon at Imperial.

Majaso12 · 17/11/2023 15:08

Dd finally has her overall mark for the year! Has had to work out her exam mark herself because they don’t give the breakdown at the end of the year.

Xenia · 17/11/2023 21:13

I am still following the thread even though my twins are a bit older. Glad to see a future lawyer here - good luck on the SQE course. My twins were one of the last to do the LPC predecessor course and today have started part of the process (screening) to be admitted as solicitors in January

BenchOfCompany · 07/12/2023 17:09

Time seems to be flying by. Picking Ds up on Saturday, one semester down and two to go. He seems to be really enjoying this year I assume because he got a choice in his modules.

Ds2 has just finished his year 13 mocks and has 2 uni offers already. The Christmas tree is going up this Sunday, the presents are all bought and now I can just relax.

I love reading your updates @Xenia and that applies to everyone else too. As we have moved several times with Dh's job and as a trailing spouse it has been difficult to make and retain friends so this is like a support group for when we were all had our chidlren going through uni applications together.

Does everyone celebrate Christmas on here? Are you hosting or lucky enough to have someone else cook it all for you? I fall into the latter category as my sister does it, as a vegetarian herself the side dishes are amazing, my non-vegetarian BIL cooks a turkey crown for the meat eaters. It will be delicious as usual. We bring some tupperware, a cool bag and ice packs to take some particular left overs away with us.

Xenia · 08/12/2023 12:08

Bench, well done to your son with his offers. My children's cousin is in year 1 of university so we certainly have recent experience in the wider family.

Yes, we celebrate Christmas and I think there will be about 12 of us on Boxing Day (when we are having our main meal this year). It is lovely to have grandchildren now too at Christmas including the youngest who has just turned 2 last week - much less cynical than older student age children although we all do enjoy Christmas anyway.,
