They do work them quite hard!

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 28/04/2024 17:28

Having a complete rethink here. Breathe.

Any thoughts on Goldsmiths v Kingston for Fine art with Art History?

DC really likes the grounded but specialist feel at Kingston, the facilities and spaces and access to different workshops and (apparent) support for interdisciplinary working.

Tutor kind of saying but Goldsmiths...

We watched 2009 BBC documentary on YouTube, "Goldsmiths, But is it Art." I took a moment to accept it wasn't a spoof. DC said it made them more keen to study Art but hasn't helped with where.

Aaarghthepancakes · 30/04/2024 13:38

Last day of Art practical today. DC is exhausted. So that will be one A level done and dusted. Strange feeling.

Cp2324 · 30/04/2024 15:26

Goldsmiths is in a bit of trouble at the moment. There was a Guardian article a few weeks ago . I'm sure lots of unis are struggling right now but sounds like there is quite some disruption at G/s already.

ArtGarfield · 30/04/2024 21:24

Goldsmiths is in trouble. I’d look very very carefully before going there.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 30/04/2024 22:26

Thanks. Have read Goldsmiths article. Most of the redundancies seem to be in other departments. It's a small university and really seems to have suffered badly with the funding squeeze.

Lots to think about. Using UCAS Extra means one application at a time so slow and can't get all offers in before weighing up. Assuming offers will be made which is not a given!

mondaytosunday · 01/05/2024 10:10

@HannahDefoesTrenchcoat not fine art but my DD was seriously considering Kingston for animation (she's now applying for an academic degree). She didn't get a place for Foundation there which was very disappointing. But the faculties and options are amazing and so much more than any other place we visited.

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 01/05/2024 10:27

The competition for foundation at the bigger art schools in densely populated areas is fierce.

@mondaytosunday hopefully it will all turn out for the best.

mondaytosunday · 01/05/2024 16:27

@HannahDefoesTrenchcoat yes it did - she got offers from UAL and Morley and chose the latter as very small cohort (40). She went to Portugal for a months work experience via the Turing scheme, made really good friends so it was the right choice.

Hi everyone. I was on the original threads and then poor health meant uni looked like it was out the window.
However, dc is now going to uca in September for concept art.
Really happy to be joining you again x

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 03/05/2024 08:03

@OneFrenchEgg That's lovely news. I hope it all goes really well for her.

Dd has just booked her slot for September's open day at the Ruskin. Does anyone have dc who have visited before or gone to the talks? She's just 16 at the moment and will have to go on her own, as they don't allow anyone accompanying due to numbers. She's absolutely fine with that, but would be nice to tell her roughly what to expect. I have told her that the odds of her getting in are more than slim! But, it's good to have something to aim for! I am not sure how much info she will actually take in on the day...

mondaytosunday · 03/05/2024 08:35

Oh that's so good to hear @OneFrenchEgg! UCA seemed a good (dare I say) caring school. Nice town too!

OneFrenchEgg · 03/05/2024 09:00

Thanks @mondaytosunday @FriendlyLaundryMonster caring and small is what sold it in the end plus the personalised advice re: courses and applying.

Okisenough · 03/05/2024 10:34

@OneFrenchEgg that's really lovely news and I wish you and your dd all the best. UCA is still one of our top choices (yes still no decision made here), we loved the intimacy of the place and the warmth of many of the staff/student ambassadors.

OneFrenchEgg · 03/05/2024 10:52

Thank you @Okisenough it was the portfolio that saved the day as illness had impacted a level results so yes I do feel the nurturing vibe was really there.
I liked it a lot, if your dc end up there I'm sure they will do well.

Aaarghthepancakes · 03/05/2024 10:57

Loved UCA when we visited. Would have been one of our choices if they'd still had their stand alone Foundation year. I'm sure your DC will have a fantastic time.

My DD applied and didn't get an interview. She went to the open day and stayed at Christchurch. She liked the Ruskin but hated staying at Christchurch. She said she thought they would put something on for them in the evening, but they had dinner and then she was in her room on her own most of the evening. She went to the common room where they said to go but no-one was there except a handful of people and there was nothing to do.

Bear in mind the Ruskin is on two sites- the main building is a bit of a walk from the city centre site and that's where the talks were held.

mondaytosunday · 04/05/2024 01:32

My DD left her year end group project artwork on the tube this morning. She is distraught. Filled in the lost and found form right away but it says it takes up to two weeks to process (and that's if someone turned it in) and it's due next week. Plus she got rejected from LSE so feels the world is against her. Parenting at this stage is so hard!

OneFrenchEgg · 04/05/2024 07:23

Oh @mondaytosunday I hope it is found

HannahDefoesTrenchcoat · 04/05/2024 07:30

Blimey mondaytosunday I hope it's been found and makes its way back quickly.

PhotoDad · 04/05/2024 09:39

Oh no! Fingers crossed, @mondaytosunday. And welcome back, @OneFrenchEgg!

OneFrenchEgg · 04/05/2024 09:46

Thank you@PhotoDad we are in the midst of DSA, supporting letters and accommodation applications !

Philandbill · 04/05/2024 12:06

@OneFrenchEgg welcome back, good to have you with us again.
@mondaytosunday that is the stuff of nightmares indeed. I hope it's found quickly.

Okisenough · 04/05/2024 17:30

@mondaytosunday that's terrible, I have my fingers crossed it is found soon. Is it worth calling the individual stations and seeing if anyone has handed it in before it is sent to the lost and found central office? I hope your dd knows it can happen to anyone.

Okisenough · 07/05/2024 23:45

Finally, have made a decision over here. Going with Herts as firm and UCA as insurance.
