Do Liverpool/Sheffield take you if you drop a grade

DC's lower offers are ABB from Liverpool and Sheffield. They got BBB in recent mocks. Wondering if either uni would still accept them if these were actual results.

Joint honours French plus a humanity.

Possibly. The French might be forgiving. Neither of these are insurance though if they both require the same grades. Why no insurance?

Summerof76a · 22/04/2023 15:59

Other offers are AAB Southampton and Newcastle.

Sheffield would I think. My DS went there and they did for her and for her languages flatmate

Delphigirl · 22/04/2023 16:51

Dd

TizerorFizz · 22/04/2023 17:16

So what has school predicted? The other offers are higher!

TizerorFizz · 22/04/2023 17:20

Sheffield 26th and Liverpool 35th for French in CUG so probably both have wriggle room. However is it realistic to firm the ones with higher requirements? That’s a grade more for 2 subjects.

getmeavodka · 22/04/2023 17:23

My son got into Liverpool on BBB to do marketing whe course requirements were AAB . He did a gap year though and applied when already had the results.

MarshalTheTroops · 22/04/2023 17:32

You can phone the admissions department at the university and ask what the average grade for acceptance were last year. It can be quite eye opening. The STEM course my daughter applied for at Leeds Uni in 2018 wanted AAA, it’s average grade for accepted students was BBB.

So no issue anywhere: probably.

After their mock results, I fear there may be an issue - hence the thread.

DS put Sheffield as his insurance last year. They were explicit at the offer holder day that if they were your firm choice and dropped a grade you would still be accepted.

TizerorFizz · 22/04/2023 21:02

Well yes, maybe, but not necessarily. Are mocks accurate or marked harshly? What is school saying?

Gormless · 22/04/2023 21:07

It can depend a bit on how other candidates do in their A levels too, and how close to its recruitment target the department gets. In short it’s always hard to say for definite until the a level results are out.

calimali · 22/04/2023 21:11

Go on Student Room and ask the students on there what they were accepting last year. I would expect Liverpool to accept on a grade lower. I know several students who got in on lower than offered grades.

LemonSwan · 22/04/2023 21:15

Sheffield didn’t for me but it was top 3 in the country for a very popular subject. Clearing called me back as a related department saw my application and asked me to join them instead. Ended up in the no 1 course in the country for an exciting related and rising field. Complete fluke. Probably the best accidental thing to happen to me.

Alternatively if you really want a uni just switch to any other course. Then after a few weeks or a month you will have drop outs and space will open again on the course. I had friends who did this and switched to the original course they couldn’t get to from their grades.

Goodluck.

PettsWoodParadise · 22/04/2023 21:32

How harsh are they at mock marking? DD knows one of her teachers never gives an A star for example at mocks. She did however get top marks in her class and in previous years always got a large number of A stars amongst the students despite the teacher never giving them out…for Uni offers he will give predictions of A star but often very reluctantly. DD got an A star prediction from this teacher but in mocks got an A (no stars predicted). She was one of only three who got an A in mocks, based on conversations with other teachers and profile of how he marks, she is actually on track for the A star. The other teachers say he never gives A stars and this is part of his tactic to keep students on their toes and not be complacent.

Skybluepinky · 22/04/2023 21:32

Liverpool don’t accept C grades.

RampantIvy · 22/04/2023 22:13

My friend's DD dropped to an unexpected C in one subject and was rejected from Liverpool. She ended up at Sheffield where she achieved a 2.1 in law and is now a grad scheme trainee detective.

Summerof76a · 22/04/2023 22:17

Thanks for the replies.

DC wanted to firm Newcastle and have Sheffield as insurance but it might be better to have Sheffield as firm.

@Summerof76a
Talk to the school first. I would not just decide based on mocks if they were harshly marked. Try and find out if predictions are robust or not. That’s the key isn’t it? If Sheffield ticks the boxes, put them as firm. If Newcastle still looks achievable after talking to the school, possibly stick to them. Having said that, there’s not much to choose between any of them!

Rainydaysgetmedown · 26/04/2023 22:59

Depends on the course, French may have some wiggle room. Sheffield def didn’t flex around anything politics related.

TizerorFizz · 27/04/2023 08:32

In COVID affected results, there were more applicants with the correct grades than usual. So I know someone who didn’t get Liverpool by 1 grade on a science course. The A level result was adjusted and Liverpool accepted DC. I think Sheffield have upped their entry requirement for Politics. Possibly to reflect popularity. It’s AAB now and it used to be ABB a few years ago.

Definitely AAB now with some of the politics related courses AAA
