Am I out of touch - or is this the going rate?

It's for A level drama … online ….. and they also said they do 30mins for £50.

That seems insane to me. 3 times the going rate here.

Nap1983 · 06/04/2023 13:05

That seems a lot, I think it’s about 30 quid an hour here.

HelloMrBond · 06/04/2023 13:06

Is the drama teacher in character wearing a mask and striped jumper?

bracemyselfagain · 06/04/2023 13:11

Damn ...
I paid £28 ph last year!

Violetparis · 06/04/2023 13:13

I pay £40 an hour for an in person Biology tutor.

42isthemeaning · 06/04/2023 13:18

I think tuition fees vary widely depending on the area and the level.
You'll always pay more in London and the south east and again will pay more for A level than gcse.
For dd, I paid £25 p/h online for gcse tuition (university students offering tuition) but would charge more if I were tutoring one to one; probably £35-40. (I'm a qualified teacher with 25+ years experience of A level / GCSE)

42isthemeaning · 06/04/2023 13:19

Just read op again and see it was for online tuition? Wow that's steep!

Viviennemary · 06/04/2023 13:21

Utter madness. Is it a mistake. Maybe is a famous actor.

Panicmode1 · 06/04/2023 13:23

We are paying 45 quid an hour for an A level biology tutor. £100 is ridiculous (IMO)!

With a bag that says swag.
Quite.

I tutor English language and lit up to degree level and charge £15 online and £20 in person. I'm clearly missing a very big trick!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 06/04/2023 13:26

Seems ok to me. Kip McGrath charge £50 for 45 mins locally. That’s in a centre so no travelling between students for the tutor.
perhaps they have a skill set that is in short supply?

RainyReadingDay · 06/04/2023 13:36

Going rate seems to be £30 p/hour where we are. This is what we're paying for DS.

LynetteScavo · 06/04/2023 13:37

The most expensive I've seen was £145 ph for Maths GCSE, with a guarantee of a certain amount of grade increase - I can't remember now how much of an increase. I couldn't afford them.

LynetteScavo · 06/04/2023 13:40

I pay £30ph but I think the going rate for most things is £35 around here.I only look for tutors who know how to teach, not people who are really good at their subject. I'm not sure if that's the right approach or not.

Tescoland · 06/04/2023 13:45

This tutor must be Sir Ben Kingsley himself 😐

I winner if you get your money back if there is no grade increase?

NCTDN · 06/04/2023 13:53

Wonder Blush

Oblomov23 · 06/04/2023 13:53

Blimey. Maths GCSE is £25 or £30 ph here in Surrey.

gamerchick · 06/04/2023 13:55

Sounds like they don't want to do it to me.

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 06/04/2023 13:58

I would say it's high, but equally A-level Drama is a somewhat niche skills set (I am assuming it's someone who currently teaches the course?).

If they have a strong track record in improving grades, then I can understand why they might charge this.

Or, as a PP says, maybe they are very busy and don't especially want the work?

GU24Mum · 06/04/2023 14:00

Hmm, one of mine is a first year uni drama student currently earning minimum wage (no issue with that) for a bar job. Will mention that she's definitely missing the market!!

Ooolaaaala · 06/04/2023 14:00

They have given me a time slot of when they are available - so free to do the work.

OP posts:
gamerchick · 06/04/2023 14:08

Well they will if they're going to score 100 quid an hour.

Tradespeople have been known to quote outrageous prices because they don't really want to do it.

Notaclu · 06/04/2023 14:24

£50ph hour for physics here - just put the rate up to £75ph to cover peak demand season but holding at £50 for those already signed up….

medianewbie · 06/04/2023 14:27

£40 p/hr 1:1 F2F in Scotland
for N5 (GCSE equivalent).
