Am I out of touch - or is this the going rate?

It's for A level drama … online ….. and they also said they do 30mins for £50.

Why bother with a tutor for drama?? Seriously. You either have talent and ability or you don’t. And a great actor doesn’t need a drama GCSE.

ofteninaspin · 06/04/2023 14:39

DD tutors A level Biology 1:1 in person and online and charges 40 pounds an hour (in the South East).

Cassiusclay · 06/04/2023 15:57

I'm paying £35 an hour for A level physics tuition. That's a bonkers fee.

KittyMcKitty · 06/04/2023 16:03

All the tutors I know of around here are iro £50 ph for A level. That’s for an experienced tutor with proven track record. The price is same whether ftf or zoom. You’d pay less for a Uni student doing tutoring to earn extra cash.

There’s an awful lot (Eng Lit type things) to drama - the acting is a comparatively small part.

Doing drama A level doesn't mean you want to become an actor. You may want uk do something else entirely at Uni and need a top grade.
£100 is still ridiculous though!

The most expensive I've seen was £145 ph for Maths GCSE, with a guarantee of a certain amount of grade increase - I can't remember now how much of an increase. I couldn't afford them.

I often have parents who insist the tutor says they will get a much grade than we think.

I want to suggest a scheme where they hold back some of the pay and offer to give double that amount if the grade does increase. I suspect no tutor would accept the deal.

Getting through an A-level or GCSE in Drama will be very little to do with whether you are a good actor or not.

determinedtomakethiswork · 06/04/2023 17:31

@marcopront but why should any tutor accept that? If the student isn't prepared to do any work, then why should the tutor lose money?

Don't tell the RADA applicants!

In Oxfordshire 1:1 physics/chem A level around £40-60. Never heard of that price! But can see maybe London might support it

Agoodidea · 07/04/2023 09:02

Is this to tutor just for the next few weeks until the exam this year, so maybe 6 weeks max?
or is it to tutor for exams in 2024?
If the former, steep but understandable, but if the latter, outrageously pricey.

QueenofLouisiana · 07/04/2023 09:08

DH charges £25/hr at GCSE, £35/hr at A Level. Usually he finds that parents will share the cost with friends, he charges £15/ £25 per hour if two students. He tutors maths, usually to people who have had older siblings taught by him in schools he has since left.

ZirihePevzig · 07/04/2023 09:15

It's supply and demand. If they are good and people recommend them and there are 20 people locally willing to pay £45 per hour but they actually only want to work 10 hours a week on this so they can do actual acting work too, then it makes sense to increase prices until the number of pupils hits the number of hours available. If you don't want to pay that much, don't.

mrsconradfisher · 07/04/2023 09:32

I pay £45 for an A level Psychology Tutor online (she is absolutely amazing though). It has been essential though as DS was left without a Psychology teacher since Feb Half Term.

Ooolaaaala · 07/04/2023 11:52

Just heard from the person who recommended this tutor that they paid them £60/hr last year……

I consider myself expensive at £50p/h but have 15y experience and a waiting list a mile long. £100ph is madness.

Sounds like either they have a huge demand for their work or they don't want the job.

I wonder if it’s a seasonal thing - puts prices up for the last minute people in a crisis before exams - supply and demand - My DC is in Yr12 - so it’s not urgent could wait until September.

OP posts:
Ooolaaaala · 08/04/2023 10:55

What I mean is I we would be a longer term commitment.

OP posts:
PritiPatelsMaker · 08/04/2023 14:03

I'd just check with them that this is the price g from September.

We had a tutor for DS who we found through Tutorhunt for one of his science subjects.

The tutor was virtual and a quart of that price. DS got two grads above what he was being predicted in Y12.

Notaclu · 09/04/2023 09:47

There is def a seasonal increase right now - yes i imagine it might reduce foe sept; in my earlier post I put the temporary increase for my dc physics tutor

WheelsUp · 09/04/2023 09:51

i don't know how many drama tutors are out there but I paid £30ph for a medical school student to help with A-level Biology.
