Jobs for uni going DD which don't need experience

Lentilweaver · 05/03/2023 18:43

DD in second year of uni is trying to get a part time job in hospitality or retail, but has no experience in either. So far she has logged onto Stint, and combed Indeed with no luck. Most people say they want someone with experience. Any tips?

McDonald's, my daughter worked for them for just over a year (hated it!) whilst in sixth form and has since found it easy to get retail jobs. They always ask about McD's in interviews.

Blanketpolicy · 05/03/2023 19:39

Ds got a PT job with Dominos, most of their new starts have no experience, stay for about a year and then move on. Ds has been there since May last year and is looking for something different, with more suitable hours, now he has a bit of experience.

Lentilweaver · 05/03/2023 20:59

I think she has applied to McD's but hasn't heard back. She is also listing herself on catsitting sites as she is very good with cats, but gosh, it's a crowded market.

Student union bar? That gave me enough bar experience to get a job in many many pubs.

Sarahjanepostgrsd · 05/03/2023 22:25

Friend’s niece volunteered in local pub during one uni vac (4 weeks). Two shifts a week unpaid but got a reference and then walked into pub jobs at uni

I didn't realise it was so competitive. Tbh she didn't work when younger because of the pandemic. Will pass on all the suggestions.

Print out 100 cvs, with no address on them, just mobile number, or not happy with that, just email

Add short note explaining that you are a uni student looking for part time work

deliver to all local businesses within walking distance

Sarahjanepostgrsd · 05/03/2023 23:11

@Lentilweaver yep, it is surprisingly competitive. The young woman I mentioned rather enjoyed it though (and the extra income) - and having stuck at a relatively menial, customer-facing job was a definite plus when it came to grad recruitment

I think it is better to walk into local pubs bars and coffee shops and hand out CVs. Then they can see her, talk to her, make a judgment about whether to follow up. Tell her the key thing is to make sure she looks super clean and tidy (long hair tied back) and especially clean under her fingernails! Look like she is ready to put on an apron and do a shift.

absolutely

WMH · 05/03/2023 23:19

DD1 got bar work with only coffee shop experience and her boyfriend got Taco Bell with no food experience.
BUT DD applied to loads places online who didn't get back to her. Happens a lot with Indeed and the likes. She had to actually go in to places to follow up and ask about job and that's how she got her trial shift.

TizerorFizz · 06/03/2023 00:17

@Lentilweaver
Baby sitting. Lots of need! Not much experience needed. Common sense required.

Reply to adverts in cafe/restaurant windows. I’ve seen loads! Approach hotels for jobs. They never can get enough staff.

Get her to go round all your local cafes and bars and ask in person. Many are looking for staff.

piedbeauty · 06/03/2023 07:31

Dd works as a shot girl selling shots in pubs (she's at uni too). Various companies do this, eg FOMO. Your dd will have to be confident, though.

An unpaid internship working in a pub?!?! 😮

Jesus.

Doyourealise · 06/03/2023 07:35

Are there any employment agencies specialising in hospitality where she is? My DC got experience this way.

This! Also worth asking in other cafes on campus - often the company that runs the refectory also does event catering and needs lots of student casuals for those.

(If she happened to be studying in London let me know as we are recruiting!)

Runningonempty01 · 06/03/2023 07:40

My son didn't get anywhere with indeed etc. He had minimal experience. Posted on a local Facebook group, got loads of leads and a job in a cafe / bar within a week.

Stomacharmeleon · 06/03/2023 07:44

Wetherspoons?

redskylight · 06/03/2023 07:45

Possibly it's the wrong time of year?

Back in September you could pretty much walk into a job in any restaurant or shop.

DC have friends working as swim teachers, tutors and lifeguards.

PermanentTemporary · 06/03/2023 07:47

She needs to go face to face. Employers especially in hospitality still like people who've got the get up and go to get up and talk to them.

VanCleefArpels · 06/03/2023 07:52

Local golf clubs might be a good shout- ours is desperate for staff!!

Ariela · 06/03/2023 07:55

Honestly I'd suggest she goes face to face, and offers to do a trial shift (which should be paid). Shows she is keen, and gives the opportunity to see her in person before deciding no experience = no on paper.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 06/03/2023 08:39

Tip for retail, wear something purchased fairly recently but not brand new from that shop when you go in. Don't be mega obvious either (so not a jumper with 'New Look' written on the front).

My first ever job was in Primark. It was hell but showed other employers that I could put up with some shit and tackle mess well.
