York or Loughborough for Management BSc

DC not sporty. Course is very very similar and likes both. Year in industry/overseas available at both. Student finds own placement at both and support seems similar. Been to both open days and neither out shone the other. Grade requirement same. Travel time is also very similar. Both campuses albeit there’s more to York city than Loughborough town from what we have seen. But didn’t really see Loughborough town.
Anyone have any opinions on which is ‘better’ please?

I went to Loughborough many, many years ago and really loved it. I did love sport however, although didn’t do a PE degree. The business school was great with lots of links to industries etc. It’s was a v confident place with lots of students who were busy, hard working and self disciplined. Not hugely diverse but we are talking 30ys ago!
Much of the social life centred around the campus as the town was a low key, midlands market town with some good pubs but not much other nightlife.

York would be less about sport and students would probably use the city more, go on trips to the local area. The course will likely be equivalent. Both are good Unis and your DC will love it !

Hope that helps a bit. Maybe someone else will have some more recent experience!

Well worth visiting both cities and campuses if you have the chance to do so.

I've recruited year in industry students from that course at Loughborough. Of note:

  • Lboro is somewhat cheap for accommodation. This may or may not be important for you
  • Having enough accommodation on campus seems to help the students get year in industry placements - they can afford to keep applying for longer without being concerned about what will happen should they not get a suitable placement.
  • All the ones I interviewed/ employed really enjoyed Loughborough and the course. I'm sure the same is true of York.

DS is at Loughborough, town has very little going for it but he finds enough parties etc to go to.

campus is very active, lots of sports at every level from fun inter hall stuff to international level. Lots of other societies and interests to try though.

campus hall committees are all very active & you remain an alumni of your hall and participate in events through the Uni career.

all senior staff like the VC are visible and engage regularly with students.

Chewbecca · 29/01/2023 21:45

DS is at Loughborough and thinks it is great. He isn’t sporty at all but belongs to several other nerdy societies. The town is meh but it’s all about the great campus life.

Assume you have visited both? DS knew he liked Loughborough from our campus tour.

TizerorFizz · 30/01/2023 00:11

The Complete University Guide puts Loughborough at 10 and York at 22 for this subject. So Loughborough I would suggest is stronger.

Has DC considered Bath or Warwick? Both campus and ranked in top 10? Bath is very strong for Management and not dissimilar to York in many ways.

PerpetualOptimist · 30/01/2023 09:01

Both unis have similar 'graduate level' employment stats, at around 70% for management courses.

Lboro has consistently high student satisfaction at c.90% (vs 70% for York) for management courses.

The main non-course difference is that Lboro is a mid-sized town whereas York is larger and, since the pandemic, a year-round domestic tourist destination.

This means York has a more vibrant city centre (and term-time hospitality jobs that go with that) but also pressures on available student accommodation as some private landlords switch to Airbnb to cater for the tourists.

Africa2go · 30/01/2023 10:05

I think L'boro is ranked higher than York in Management and in general, also has won the best uni accommodation for a few years. I think (my view of open days) is that its links with industry are excellent.

Bunnyannesummers · 30/01/2023 18:36

Both very similar across a few categories so I would consider other factors - what extra curricular do you want? Are they on offer? What’s transport like to home? I would say York over Lboro, based mostly on transport but Lboro is also excellent

redspottedmug · 30/01/2023 18:56

York privately rented accommodation is eye wateringly expensive. If that is a factor.

Constellar · 30/01/2023 22:42

DS ruled out York last year for Mgmt as v little flex re modules in Y2.

namechanged221 · 30/01/2023 22:48

My Dd went to York and is still there doing a masters. She has loved the Uni experience and York are very strong on pastoral support on campus
I think it's got the best of both worlds, being a full campus Uni with lakes and open spaces but close enough to walk or bus into vibrant city centre.

Ah that’s interesting as they highlighted a lot of options at York. She needs to look again at that then. Thank you.

Loughborough has a far better ranking in the tables for management.

I actually emailed the dept as it was so restrictive compared to others but they confirmed it was core ones only in Y2, no flex.

DS went for Econ somewhere totally different in the end anyway!

DS got offers from both of these universities last yr. DS very quickly crossed out York when he realised that the Management course did not have ANY accreditations. It may have changed this year so worth checking. Loughborough School of Business and Economics within which Mangements sits, has several accreditations for quality but York seemed to have accreditations by Course and whilst quite a few of them had professional accreditations e.g ACCA, CIMA for the BSC in Accounting etc they didn't have accreditations for BSC Business Management e.g AMBA, EQUIS. I also remember DS spoke to a student helper online because he was quite keen on York and asked about accrediations and the student confirmed that there weren't any specific ones for the business Management course.

This might not be very important to you depending on what path your dc decides to follow upon graduating but just in case please check.

kimlek · 31/01/2023 20:31

@Shimy Wow. We wouldn’t have realised this as I’m pretty sure Yorks business school states it’s triple accredited. I’ve no idea if she needs accreditation or not tbh, but it’s worth looking into. Thank you.

OP posts:
Shimy · 01/02/2023 13:33

It's not that she needs accreditation and if they've stated they are triple accredited then that should definitely be okay. It's just a way of deciding between so many degrees which ones are likely to give the best quality. Of course, some universities go further to ensure their degree contents is of such a standard they can get exemptions as well, in their related professional field exams e.g ACCA, should they choose to follow this path.

York is a very good university, I was quite shocked when the student helper confirmed there were none.

TizerorFizz · 01/02/2023 17:45

But there are accreditations on lots of their courses. Maybe some don’t meet the criteria but others do.

Shimy · 01/02/2023 19:40

But there are accreditations on lots of their courses. Maybe some don’t meet the criteria but others do.

How is this useful if OP is interested in Bsc Management?

TizerorFizz · 01/02/2023 23:10

Because @Shimy , she might change her mind to get an accredited course???

Toddlerteaplease · 01/02/2023 23:22

York, Loughborough is a dump in comparison!

kimlek · 02/02/2023 00:25

So is her room @Toddlerteaplease so I doubt that’d put her off.
@TizerorFizz & @Shimy I will get her to double check the triple accreditation. I think it applies to the business schools as a whole rather than individual courses, but she will check. Thank you. She’s zero desire to become an accountant so the ACA exemptions aren’t relevant but she does want a course that’s well respected in industry.

OP posts:
TizerorFizz · 02/02/2023 09:01

I think York university is well respected. It would matter about accreditation if she has a certain career in mind and the degree is required as a stepping stone in that career. It matters for Engineering for example. It doesn’t matter for HR management, marketing and quite a few others. Getting a training job and further exams are required and suitable work.

kimlek · 02/02/2023 09:37

@TizerorFizz she’s not entirely sure but wants to work in business management. I’ve no idea if she needs accreditation for that. Any ideas where she can find out please? She doesn’t want to be an accountant although appreciates accountancy is part of the degree. The degrees are quite broad (business analytics, marketing, accountancy, ESG modules etc) and all the ones she’s applied for offer a year abroad and/or in industry. She’s very keen to have a year in industry plus gain work experience with summer internships. She’s also applying for degree apprenticeships but knows they’re highly competitive.

I can't comment on the courses you are discussing, but my DD is in her first year at York and absolutely loves it. The city has a great vibe, with loads going on, but also feels really safe. She has just finalised her 2nd year accommodation and, although a bit more expensive than her halls, it's not as bad as I'd feared.
