We haven't visited either uni and they both want BBC so would be DC's insurance. Which one to pick? Is one more prestigious than the other?

My area is lovely. But the city centre isn’t clean, there are stabbings almost every weekend and there are some areas I would never, ever walk through.

4thonthe4th · 01/02/2023 17:54

Also, the area I live isn’t going to be where the SHU students are living. It’s going to be eccy road, the new ones near shalesmoor or town.

Sheffield is quite simply a great student city. It's just a great city, anyway.

Sheffield’s bloody amazing! Beautiful city, beautiful people, and beautiful landscape of the the peaks. Really miss it actually. Best years of my life.

LemonSwan · 01/02/2023 17:58

And yes even named my cat after it. His name is Ecclesall (or Eccy for short). The road my partner and I used to live on when we first moved in together 🤣

Same. I bloody loved it and I'd move back there tomorrow if I could.

That's true of any big city, though, surely? The ones I'm most familiar with are London, Nottingham and Manchester and definitely all three of them have areas in which I wouldn't go, certainly at night, so not sure that says anything specifically about Sheffield…

thing47 · 01/02/2023 18:30

TizerorFizz · 01/02/2023 17:37

Yes but SH isn’t as good as Newcastle for lots of reasons. Sheffield university, yes.
@DressingForRevenge Firsts are not all considered equal by employers. They do know the difference between Durham and Northumbria!

Sure, but I wasn't actually comparing Hallam to anywhere else as you kind of imply. I was merely using it as an example of my main point re. the importance of doing some due diligence with regard to the details behind any university league table.

A department which scores much higher than the overall rating of the university is probably worth a second look as to why that might be and whether employers in the relevant sector(s) are aware of it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/02/2023 18:32

Sheffield is nothing like Manchester in terms of violence.

I was replying to the poster who said it’s clean and safe. It isn’t. Particularly not in the area students from SHU will be living.

Piggywaspushed · 01/02/2023 18:42

We need Boys3 back with stats about safety in Sheffield.

TizerorFizz · 01/02/2023 19:35

What does safety mean exactly? For students or for younger white or black males in gangs? Sheffield has always been safe for students. Like more or less anywhere else in the uk.

TizerorFizz · 01/02/2023 19:40

What areas of Sheffield are not safe? I know it fairly well and, as it has a big student population, I doubt very much a student wouldn’t be safe there in any area with lots of student housing. However students should not be walking alone late at night in any city. Always get transport home and be in a group.

TizerorFizz · 01/02/2023 20:03

@thing47
Yes. I hear what you say. There are of course great departments in lower ranked universities but, for MFL you don’t need stellar A levels to get much further up the league tables. Few universities are truly competitive for MFL. So all options should be looked at. These are not stem degrees so university does matter a bit more.

What parts of Sheffield aren’t safe? Off the top of my head…
Pitsmoor
Spital Hill / Wicker
Burngreave
Wybourn
Page Hall and the pretty much the whole area around the NGH.
Manor
Woodthorpe
Arbourthorne
Firth Park
Parson Cross
Shiregreen
Sharrow / London Road down to near Bramall Lane(students)
Shalesmoor the part near that petrol station on the dual carriageway (students)
City centre (Students)

Would you, knowing Sheffield well, live in any of the above areas? I certainly wouldn’t and bet you could pull a stabbing, shooting or murder or attempted murdered in the last 12 months in all of the above.

Piggywaspushed · 01/02/2023 21:10

Sheffield is the safest of the UK's major cities.

Christ that’s equally scary and depressing at the same time given the amount of stabbings and shootings!

Afteebaiv · 01/02/2023 21:37

Sheffield is a great city. Aber is great if you want the opportunity to experience a difference lifestyle by making the most of having a beach and open countryside to explore def a few steps away from your door. Nightlife and social clubs etc aplenty. Well worth the train journey. Cheaper en-suite accommodation. I could go on but compare the courses. Also putting your things in storage for the summer is an option, lots use the flexible storage companies availability locally, as is getting your stuff delivered back home at the very end.

Definitely look at what the students say and compare the courses.

TizerorFizz · 01/02/2023 22:52

Most of those areas are not student areas in Sheffield. Sharrow Lane is. But it feels safe to me. City Centre? Do students live there? Visiting is optional.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/02/2023 09:09

@Piggywaspushed thsnk you.

No city is sage, but l knew Sheffield was one of the safest.

I just associate Sheffield with cutting down all those trees.

Not a terribly helpful contribution for the OP though. 😀

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/02/2023 09:13

Yes, it did cut down trees😡which is why the Greens are so strong in the city.

However it still left lots of beautiful historical tree lined streets behind.

Lots of student accommodation in the centre, yes. Didn’t say they were student areas either. You asked which areas weren’t safe and I gave a few examples.

TizerorFizz · 02/02/2023 09:45

Well we are talking about students. I think Sheffield is safe for students.
