Help - anyone give advice on Conservatoire application process?

Cliff1975 · 14/10/2022 16:20

Any help will be gratefully received. My son has applied for 6 Conservatoires. We completed the application though UCAS on time for the 3rd October deadline. We selected in person audition for all except RCM where we know you have to submit an online audition by 29/10/22. All good. There was no mention of online auditions also being needed but he has received an email from Leeds telling hi to go on to the Acceptd website to book hi in person audition, which he has done but the others have deadlines on there to submit an online audition. So now he and I are very confused nd worried as one of the deadlines is monday. He is not ready yet, not helped by a hospital stay and Glandular Fever 2 weeks ago. So if we selected in person audition doe we need to do anything or do we wait for emails inviting him to attend?
He has received next to no help from school.

My daughter applied for 4. RCNM and RWCMD both require auditons to be submitted on acceptd. It says on their website auditon requirements etc.

Kyra1205 · 14/10/2022 20:15

I have found most of the admission teams really helpful. It's worth emailing them or ringing them to check or discuss.

I went through this last year with DD. Each conservatoire will have their own audition process, so suggest looking on each website. DD applied to 2 and submitted 2 recorded auditions followed up by interviews and got 2 offers. Good luck!

Comefromaway · 16/10/2022 21:15

Last year Ds was given the choice between online or in person at Leeds.

Dh and I are helping a friend of his who has applied to RNCM. The first round is an online audition, has to be submitted by 28th Oct and an online theory aural test to be submitted by 21st Oct. A link will have been sent. They then offer a 2nd round in person audition to those who are selected.

with regards to the Monday deadline I would contact the admissions department and explain the illness/hospital stay. They may extend the deadline.

Siriusmuggle · 19/10/2022 22:25

I think it was all online for first round last year but I can’t remember! The admissions team will clarify if you contact them.

Comefromaway · 22/10/2022 16:16

The young person we know has completely missed all reference to the audition fee and is in danger of his application being looked at. There is a reference in his emails to contacting admissions if he thinks he might be eligible for fee remission (I think he might) but nothing about paying the £75. If it wasn’t for me posting him to the website he’d have had no idea.

what has he missed/how does he rectify this?

Kyra1205 · 22/10/2022 20:13

We paid our audition fees through Ucas when we applied. It was the last thing to do before submission. If it went through the school he may have then been invoiced for them instead?

Comefromaway · 22/10/2022 20:18

He doesn’t currently attend a school or college so applied independently.

Kyra1205 · 23/10/2022 08:31

Sorry, I can only advise ringing ucas and the conservatoire on Monday. When we applied this year, we had to pay before it would submit.

Kyra1205 · 09/11/2022 20:32

Just wondered how everyone was doing with their applications. Have you started to get audition dates through?

Comefromaway · 10/11/2022 11:23

The young person we have been helping hasn't heard anything yet. He has submitted the online recording, just waiting to hear if he has got through to the 2nd round.

Cliff1975 · 15/11/2022 17:49

So my DS2 applied to 6 Conservatoires, he has submitted online for RNCM has had in person auditions for Royal Scottish and Leeds and has in person audition dates in December for Royal Academy and Royal College in London. He loved the Scottish one so that is the favourite at the moment. Just waiting now...... His school, despite being a specialist music school have been no help at all.

Sounds like rncm is taking its time for all of us. Still waiting on a date for trinity too. Had one audition at RBC, awaiting outcome.

Comefromaway · 15/11/2022 21:04

It is reassuring to hear others haven’t heard from RNCM eithe

Comefromaway · 15/11/2022 21:05

I will warn you as well last year Ds wanted what seemed an eternity from Leeds.

It's frustrating for the parents, can't imagine how the kids feel

Siriusmuggle · 15/11/2022 22:57

I think RNCM was one of the later ones last year too. It’s where my son ended up going and he’s really pleased with his choice.

Comefromaway · 16/11/2022 08:11

It’s the only place ds’s friend has applied to so far. I just hope the two years without lessons hasn’t disadvantaged him to such an extent when compared with other applicants.

Comefromaway · 16/11/2022 11:37

Another friend of ds has today been offered a place at Leeds Conservatoire for Jazz.

Cliff1975 · 21/11/2022 14:53

My DS has today had an offer from Leeds - 96 UCAS points needed. He is thrilled. Does anyone know if points from music exams are included in this?

Congratulations to him.

I'm sorry I don't know the answer to that question.

It is, and this year it’s not even my child I’m waiting on news for!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 23/11/2022 02:10

i just searched on the UCAS site - a certificate in graded examination in music is listed for grade 6 and up. A distinction at Grade 8 is worth 30 points by the looks of it.

Music theory was seperate.

Some institutions quoting points rather than grades do specify e.g. 'to include at least 2 A levels', so it would be worth checking the entry requirements, but if only points are quoted, then that is probably what they really mean, so music grades attracting points would be included.

Cliff1975 · 23/11/2022 08:55

The offer says 96 points from 3 A levels so whilst he is pleased he is also now a bit deflated. Hopefully as he passed the audition this means he will get offers from other consevatoires where I believe the standard offer is 2 Es.
