simbobs be proud your DS is an independent adult ... my DS is coming back home after four years at Uni .. back to his 'summer' pub job, sharing my car & no sign of a graduate job or own home Grin ...

VanCleefArpels · 20/06/2023 20:19

@simbobs its a sure sign you have grown a fully functional adult when they start asking for appliances and soft furnishings for birthday and Christmas 😂

simbobs · 20/06/2023 20:38

@VanCleefArpels if only it could have waited that long 😏 but he seems happy.

bigTillyMint · 21/06/2023 08:03

@simbobs, now you can go round to him for dinner, and don’t forget to take your washing!

I have the opposite experience - DS came back last summer and is here for the foreseeable, so no empty nest for us (his older sister is also here) but he is easy to live with, thankfully!

simbobs · 21/06/2023 08:08

@bigTillyMint 😂Good idea! They have only just moved in. It's a rental, but unfurnished and we only emptied his student house share yesterday, so lots of organising. Guess who has the puppy in temporary residence while they get sorted...?

bigTillyMint · 21/06/2023 08:22

They got a puppy too? Wow, that’s another big responsibility. What kind is it?

simbobs · 21/06/2023 11:34

A bitey, piddly kind. Corgi, due to go home today. I was a stupid idea and , though DS loves him and dogs in general he wouldn't have had the inclination or the means to do it at this life stage. But we are where we are... My dog is counting the minutes!

Shimy · 04/07/2023 15:53

Just wanted to share my excitement, DS just got all his results and his classification (2.1) so thankful to God that he is graduating with all his grades finalised. Wishing anyone else that is waiting for their marked results all the best.

MargaretThursday · 04/07/2023 16:29

Well done little @Shimy !

chocolatenutcase · 04/07/2023 17:40

Brilliant news @Shimy. What a relief to get all the marks back. Well done to your DS. And you can get to enjoy a proper graduation. Still waiting here. 20/120 marks back so far. 'Graduation' on Thursday.

RampantIvy · 04/07/2023 17:43

Well done Shimy's DS.

Shimy · 04/07/2023 18:13

Thank you @MargaretThursday @chocolatenutcase @RampantIvy . We are so delighted especially after the whole marking strike (I know others are still waiting). DS's A'levels were fraught with worry, he just seemed to disengage but he plodded on and eventually caught some steam when he went off for his placement yr. Today he was so happy to share his news and I'm sure even looked a few feet taller. He is so glad he was dragged encouraged to go to university.

simbobs · 04/07/2023 19:01

Well done to all that have finished from this cohort. They had the most challenging time, and a far from typical student experience. My DS is also glad that he went despite everything as he knows he wouldn't have found a satisfying job otherwise (only started yesterday). His graduation isn't until November by which time I am pretty sure that he won't want to go.

Shimy · 04/07/2023 19:08

Congrats to you too @simbobs and wishing him all the best in his new job.

LouisCatorze · 04/07/2023 19:16

Congratulations to your DS @Shimy and to your DS too @simbobs .

chocolatenutcase · 04/07/2023 22:55

Congratulations @simbobs yo your DS and well done on the job. Double celebration.

RampantIvy · 04/07/2023 23:09

Well done to your DS @simbobs.
I hope your DD is OK.

simbobs · 04/07/2023 23:24

Sadly not, but that isn't for this thread, but thank you for asking.

bigTillyMint · 05/07/2023 06:57

Congratulations to @shimy DS - what a relief!

And to @simbobs DS - very exciting starting his job. Very sorry to hear about your DD though.

Shimy · 05/07/2023 11:06

Thanks all for your well wishes Smile.

ifonly4 · 05/07/2023 11:21

Haven't checked in for absolutely ages. So good to catch up with everyone's news. Lots of congratulations. They should be so proud of themselves, especially as it's been difficult for this cohort.

DD graduates next week. She's wasn't going to go originally following marking boycott, but is obviously looking forward to it, as she's said she just wants to take in the experience and not worry protests will take over (12% of her group are planning on protests in different forms). She's just finished an internship abroad and trying to get a job. I think it'll be easier when she's back here in that regard and if nothing else at some point hours will be available in a zero hours job she's had since lockdown.

ZandathePanda · 05/07/2023 11:40

@Shimy @simbobs @ifonly4 congratulations for your DCs. You know I know about not wanting to derail threads @simbobs but best wishes to your Dd.

My eldest in this cohort continues to do well at work but is being hampered by inflation/rent costs etc so has moved back home to save for a house deposit. This is taking a fair bit of adjusting to. Particularly utility, bathroom and kitchen domination (by her) leading to several plumbing emergencies, fixed by me.

Decorhate · 08/07/2023 08:47

Congratulations to all the graduates! I seem to be cursed with children who pick long courses! Ds1 has one year to go of his integrated masters with a placement year.

His placement employer have given him a summer job so he is staying in his uni town for most of the summer. Fingers crossed they will offer him a graduate job too which would take some of the pressure off in final year.

Shimy · 08/07/2023 09:25

@Decorhate Wishing him all the best with his Masters. I think your ds and mine both did placements last year although mine didn't do an integrated Masters. The placement makes such a huge difference, doesn't it? I encourage anyone who's thinking about one to definitely consider it. I know some courses don't really lend well to placements e.g the Humanities but if they're in STEM I think one should consider it but also bearing in mind they are quite competitive.

DS was offered a job at the end of his and we were delighted but what we hadn't considered was as soon as he put his CV out there (just to see what would happen really as he already had a job) he was inundated with phone calls from interested agencies etc. He had to tell themin the end he was not available for work anymore and one job he actually applied for he got it so he is no longer returning to the placement job.

ZandathePanda · 08/07/2023 09:47

@Shimy Dd found the agencies were very ‘proactive’ in their approach but they put her forward for everything. She was desperate for a job so it was an intense juggling act for a couple a weeks holding out for what she wanted.
