2023 uni applications for those pursuing art and creative routes

The other thread discussing Uni applications for RG and academic routes isn't so relevant for DS. He's considering Art Foundation year or direct entry to uni for fashion design.

Anyone care to join a thread on similar creative paths. (Not just fashion!)

He's looking at art foundation at Kingston, Central St Martin's, UCA,

For Fashion BA looking at Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, Manchester Met, Nottingham Trent, Liverpool John Moores, Leeds Beckett.

Most seem to accept without art foundation but he would need one to Central St Martin's so if he wants to try for that will need foundation.

Lots of open days coming up and hopefully school will give him some more advice next week. No start on his PS yet!!

Yes sorry! Got confused with all my acronyms. Will try the shopping centre first.

OneFrenchEgg · 30/09/2022 21:34

That's a good tip, I haven't updated my satnav for a while, thank you.

@OneFrenchEgg We crawled around Peterborough. Part of the re-routing is still happening so long stretches of 30/40 mph roadworks.

DD knows about the open day and her assignment this weekend is to sketch scenes of Cambridge life, so smile kindly on any short, curly-blonde, artists, in very bohemian frilly clothing, you might see on campus. 😀

Oh I love it - we will be very nice . If she spots a tall bit with eyeliner and curtains she can bestow some friendly vibes 😂

OneFrenchEgg · 30/09/2022 21:58

*boy not bit!

PhotoDad · 30/09/2022 22:04

@OneFrenchEgg There is already a tall boy with eyeliner and curtains on DD's course. They go to D&D club together along with a bunch of other illustrators. Turns out that people who like drawing fantasy characters also like geeky games, who knew? Have fun tomorrow! The lead illustration lecturer Chris Draper is a bit of a local legend.

PhotoDad · 30/09/2022 22:04

Argh, didn't mean to do strikethrough. I use "--" as a break in punctuation!

OneFrenchEgg · 30/09/2022 22:13

Perfect - he's obviously the right type for the course ! Looking forward to it now the parking is sorted.

PhotoDad · 01/10/2022 07:39

@OneFrenchEgg Saw you on another thread, but this probably belongs here. While you're at ARU, pop round the corner to Collier Road. Half the houses on the north side of the street are uni-owned and are super-cheap self-catering without the party noise of halls.

Philandbill · 01/10/2022 07:42

Thank you for this thread, much needed on Mumsnet, I have found my people 😊DD1 is looking at fashion for next year, she wants a course that offered lots of garment technology practice as that's what she wants to do eventually. She's currently living at home and doing an art foundation at our local university and absolutely loving it. She hated sixth form so it's a joy to see her so happy. Seems to be a lot of support from university with putting together a targeted portfolio and no assumption that the students will stay on for a full degree there. Uni are taking them to an arts focused uni fair in a couple of weeks time. DD and l looked at Loughborough last week and we both strongly felt that it wasn't for her. Also going to look at Manchester Met - her favourite on paper- Bournemouth, and Winchester. Will probably look at another uni once she's been to the fair. DD lost a lot of confidence at sixth form so having known and decent grades to apply with plus art foundation potential experience has been a big boost for her.

OneFrenchEgg · 01/10/2022 07:55

@PhotoDad thank you, brilliant. We are just setting off now x

PhotoDad · 01/10/2022 07:56

Sounds amazing, @Philandbill!

You'll have seen advice about fashion upthread. DD is waiting to get a bit more settled but then she intends to raid the fashion studios at her place because she left her sewing machine at home. Any art/design student there can use any of the studios, sometimes after an induction session for equipment use.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 01/10/2022 08:18

@Philandbill oo where is the arts based Unit fair?

Philandbill · 01/10/2022 08:42

@Lottsbiffandsmudge don't know! Think it is in Manchester but don't hold me to that...Uni are taking them on a coach for the day. Will ask her. She's resistant to saying much at the mo as "hates being asked things" but is so much happier this year so she may soften and tell me 😁

🤣 I know the feeling. Currently home alone with DS2 (year 13) and getting even words out of him is a struggle! If you get any info pls let me know although DS1 is in Leicester and we are further south so Manchetser prob wont work.
He's had such a full on few weeks on his foundation we haven't even thought about open days for next year...doh

OneFrenchEgg · 01/10/2022 12:01

Park and ride was very hard to find (newmarket) and then from Napier street stop it is a walk to the left and under the subway to the right at the roundabout. Keep walking and it's about five mins on the left. If that helps anyone coming on open days. £3 return each.

OneFrenchEgg · 01/10/2022 12:02

(For ARU sorry)

olafolaf · 01/10/2022 13:26

Thank you all and to @purfectpuss yes I think the traditional course content would probably suit DD who favours a curious mix (don't they all) of "traditional" landscape art with experimental materials. We will try and visit during the foundation reading week to at least get a feel for Oxford.

On that note, does anyone have experience of the Slade and of Goldsmiths (both quite different I think?). The whole subject is so outside my comfort zone I'm not even sure what questions I need to ask!

OneFrenchEgg · 01/10/2022 13:30

@olafolaf I can't find your original question but we've just sat in a talk at ARU and the illustration course was very 'traditional' - life drawing, outside drawing, etc and might be somewhere to look?

PhotoDad · 01/10/2022 13:40

@OneFrenchEgg That is why DD chose ARU! The talk is accurate; she spends nearly every waking moment there with a sketchbook and is out drawing with friends right now. Then they throw in Digital Art and Printmaking on top. She's the happiest she's been for years.

I think that @olafolaf's DD was looking for somewhere that combines that with analysis/academic approaches to art -- which is not the ARU way. (Glasgow and Edinburgh might be, though??)

OneFrenchEgg · 01/10/2022 13:45

Ah thank you - I couldn't find the original post as I'm still wandering round ARU! I don't know about that mix - we've seen Norwich which was lovely, AUB (current favourite) and Nottingham I think.

PhotoDad · 01/10/2022 13:48

NUA was also on DD's shortlist. In the end she decided she'd prefer an art school that was part of a larger university so there would be a wider range of clubs and societies, and that was the right choice for her. (Not for everyone!) Also she fell in love with the Cambridge architecture. She'll be really good at drawing turrets and heraldry by the end of the course, if nothing else. Do walk into town while you're there!

PhotoDad · 01/10/2022 16:39

The weekend assignment was to draw Cambridge street scenes, but DD couldn't resist sneakily sketching her illustration classmates while they were doing that. (Promise I won't spam you with too much art, but this amused me.)

We didn't see any sketchers - it was absolutely rammed though.

Hope you had a nice day, @OneFrenchEgg and DS! AUB still top choice? (Given the other financial thread, what is its rent like?)
